Warlock – Cigar Review

This week’s group cigar review is of the Warlock.  It is a fairly new cigar and we got our samples from Altadis.  The Warlock was ranked as the 9th best cigar in 2011 by Cigar Aficionado.  Needless to say, we were excited to give this one a try!  It is a really nice looking cigar with a very oily wrapper.  The pre-light draw was great and it smelled nice too!  After lighting up, we were immediately impressed.  The first third has a very rich flavor profile with sweet earth and coffee with a peppery and spicy finish.  Unfortunately, the cigar mellowed out for the following two thirds and really fell completely flat in flavor.  With 2 of our 3 cigars having construction problems near the end, this one was a real let down.  If the entire cigar smoked like the first third did, it would be worthy of the number 9 rating by CA.  As it stands, we feel it is too expensive to justify our lackluster smoking experience.  Have you tried the Warlock?  Please let us know your thoughts!

StraightUpCigars: My Warlock has a great sweet earthy smell to it. The wrapper is amazingly oily. After cutting, it has a very good draw. It takes a big cutter for this large RG cigar.

7:50 PM
IamDarren: what is the RG on this stick…. 60?

7:51 PM
StraightUpCigars: I think it is 54.

7:51 PM
IamDarren: my stick looks decent. There is a small crack at the foot and the cap placement is a little shoddy, but i like the shiny/oily appearance.

7:52 PM
Terry1: It can’t be 60 unless I have a different cigar. Mine is about a 54. Nice easy draw. Really not getting anything on the cold draw.

7:52 PM
IamDarren: cap cut perfectly with my handy palio

7:52 PM
Terry1: That’s what I need is a Palio. I’ve got a cheap cutter that’s getting dull.

7:52 PM
IamDarren: same here just a little earth, not much else.

7:53 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’m gonna light er up.

7:53 PM
IamDarren: Palio beets Xikar out of the water in my opinion. Over 100 cigars cut with it and still as sharp as when it was new.

7:54 PM
IamDarren: lighting up

7:54 PM
Terry1: I like the band. Simple and ominous at the same time. Looks like the cigar Ozzy would smoke.

7:54 PM
IamDarren: wow, nice and sweet

7:55 PM
IamDarren: some spice in there as well.

7:56 PM
StraightUpCigars: I like the band too. Mine has started off with some sweet earth, coffee and pepper. Nice start!

7:58 PM
IamDarren: yeah its quicly become a rich smoke. Getting a hint of pepper now with some coffee.

7:58 PM
Terry1: Same here. Getting the sweet earth and coffee. A touch of spice. Smoke output is a little light but has a lot of rich flavors. I’m liking it.

8:01 PM
IamDarren: just looked up some info, i didn’t realize they were made by Omar Ortez. Looks like we may have a new blender to keep our eyes on.

8:02 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, good start. Nice even burn.

8:03 PM
IamDarren: mine is picking up a buttery texture with a hint of mixed nuts. I’m really liking it.

8:06 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is transitioning a bit too, I’m gonna see where this takes me.

8:11 PM
Terry1: My draw has really tightened up and with it the flavors have really taken a bad turn. About all I get now is pepper and bitterness. I’m going to attempt to open this up.

8:12 PM
StraightUpCigars: Hopefully you can get it fixed up. Mine is smoking like a champion right now. Mellow flavors.

8:13 PM
IamDarren: mine was a little tight at first but i chomped on it a little and it opened up.

8:20 PM
IamDarren: burn is going really well on mine, just dropped the ash. Flavors on mine while mellow, are taking on a slightly bitter flavor. I hope it is just transitioning because the first third was way better.

8:21 PM
Terry1: Success! I was able to open up the cigar. Flavors are starting to settle to how the cigar started. Earth, nuts and black coffee. Burn is sharp and ash is compact.

8:24 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine has taken on some of that bitterness too, but it is not bad. I liked the first third better too. Is this a strong cigar Terry? I can feel it.

8:24 PM
Terry1: Yeah I’m starting to feel it.

8:25 PM
IamDarren: yeah i am feeling it too. It seems awfully mellow for the strength. I need more flavor.

8:27 PM
Terry1: For being number 9 on CA’s best list, I’m disappointed there’s not more to it.

8:29 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, the first third was SO good though. It may still come around.

8:31 PM
IamDarren: they must be so crunched for time over at CA, they can only spare 15 min. per stick so they never got into the last half.

8:31 PM
Terry1: That would explain the rating.

8:33 PM
IamDarren: about a half inch from the band and looks like i have a wrapper split. Looks like the band is keeping it from progressing.

8:35 PM
StraightUpCigars: Bummer, my construction has been great. 2 out of the 3 have not been though. I am getting some really nice pepper and spice on the finish. I am liking that.

8:36 PM
IamDarren: flavors seem to be slowly improving on mine. Bitterness has faded a little. The sweetness is back again and there is a little spice. Seems like it may end how it began.

8:38 PM
Terry1: Mine is doing the same. Getting some of the same flavors that we got at the start, earth, nuts and some pepper. Bitterness on mine is gone. Construction has been good once I opened up the draw.

8:41 PM
StraightUpCigars: The ash sure does hold on strong on this one. The large RG is a big factor there though.

8:42 PM
IamDarren: i am really starting to feel it now, if i wanted a nicotine rush there are plenty of other things i could smoke, still wishing the flavor was amped up a notch or two.

8:46 PM
IamDarren: hmm interesting name for a cigar. Defenition: The term warlock in origin means “traitor, oathbreaker”. In early modern Scots, the word came to be used as the male equivalent of witch.

8:48 PM
StraightUpCigars: I am in the final third of this one. It is very full bodied and packing a lot of one dimensional flavor… coffee pepper and spice.

8:48 PM
Terry1: I’m glad it’s about done. Flavors are there but don’t match up to the strength. The strength is really ramping up.

8:50 PM
IamDarren: wrapper split is getting worse and is starting to affect the burn line.

8:52 PM
Terry1: This has been an okay cigar but I disagree with the top ten rating.

8:52 PM
StraightUpCigars: Agreed.

8:55 PM
StraightUpCigars: I think this one would have been way better in a smaller RG. Mine is burning REALLY hot, and I am smoking it slowly.

8:56 PM
IamDarren: Mine has a good half inch left to go and i’m putting it down. Maybe it is the wrapper split affecting the flavor but mine has really gotten bitter. I think i’m gonna have to quit before i get sick.

8:58 PM
StraightUpCigars: No, it is not just yours mine has turned sour too. I’m going to put it down as well.

8:59 PM
Terry1: I smoked mine to the nub. Mine didn’t turn bitter but my head is swimming. Whew!

9:01 PM
StraightUpCigars: This cigar was off to a phenomenal start in the first third, but then… it fell flat on it’s head. Serious disappointment. It still had a couple of things going for it, ok price and mine had good construction. In then end, I don’t think I will have another.

9:02 PM
IamDarren: Omar let me down…

9:03 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’m going to rate it.

9:03 PM
StraightUpCigars: Terry, you definitely outsmoked us tonight.

9:04 PM
IamDarren: he got a break while his was plugged…

9:04 PM
IamDarren: still, major props

9:09 PM
Terry1: Doesn’t look like a repeat buy.

9:10 PM
IamDarren: yeah, too bad. I was so excited after looking at CA.
