Villiger La Capitana – Cigar Review

Villiger Capitana Cigar 2
Up for review is the Villiger La Capitana cigar.  Villiger is more known for their machine-made cigars than handmade premiums, so we’re curious to see how this one stack up.  It has a veiny, rough looking wrapper but a perfect draw after cutting.  Once lit up, it had a delicious and balanced coffee and pepper flavor with some sweetness.  A couple sticks had minor construction issues, but held together OK.  Overall, we liked the flavor a lot.  Combine that with the low price you can find these for, and it’s a recipe for success.  This one is easy to recommend.

Villiger Capitana Cigar 3
7:40 PM
StraightUpCigars: This La Capitana cigar has a very veiny wrapper, sweet tobacco smell, and a perfect draw after cutting.
7:45 PM
IamDarren: I agree on the wrapper, very uneven and veiny. But the construction seems decent otherwise, and the draw is perfect after cutting. Im getting a sweet nutty flavor with some spice on the cold draw.
7:45 PM
Terry1: My cigar’s draw is a touch on the tight side. Getting mostly a musty tobacco note on the cold draw. Wrapper does have a pleasant sweet tobacco nose to it. Ready to light up.
7:46 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lighting uo!
7:46 PM
IamDarren: reaching for the torch
7:49 PM
IamDarren: hmmm, not what i expected. Getting a very bright, floral sweetness with some spice. Picks up a little earth on the finish. Nice start.
7:50 PM
Terry1: The La Capitana is producing plenty of smoke. I’m getting some sweetness and spice as well. Maybe a bit of leather in the aroma. Black coffee on the finish. Good start.
7:52 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is starting rich and earthy with a spicy and floral flavor. Medium bodied.
7:53 PM
IamDarren: This is a Villiger cigar. I think i sent out one from this brand as well. Don’t know much about them.
7:54 PM
Terry1: Yeah it surprised me we both chose a Villiger to review.
7:54 PM
IamDarren: Mine is actually getting a little stronger and picking up a black coffee note on the finish. Im liking the complexity.
7:55 PM
StraightUpCigars: I just check out the price, pretty good at $25 per fiver (currently on sale).
7:55 PM
IamDarren: Well Holts was having a box blowout on the one i sent. Think i got them for 1.50 a piece
7:56 PM
StraightUpCigars: Even better!
7:56 PM
StraightUpCigars: MY ash is dropping right away, keep an eye out.
7:57 PM
IamDarren: unless its a dog turd, then its just expensive manure…
7:58 PM
IamDarren: Im feeling better now that im starting to like this one though
7:58 PM
IamDarren: getting a little pepper with the spice every few puffs, nice combo
7:59 PM
Terry1: Spice is picking up on mine too.
8:00 PM
IamDarren: a chunk of my ash just flaked off, burn is a little wavy
8:00 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’m getting a white pepper, flavorless heat on mine. Not too strong, I like it.
8:01 PM
Terry1: Mine has an uneven burn but it doesn’t seem to be getting any worse.
8:01 PM
IamDarren: I like it as well, its picking up in strength but because of the bright spice and floral notes it tones down the strength. Lots of flavor.
8:03 PM
IamDarren: Well I have had the Hydra LG for over a week now and it is doing the job. Its kinda crude for what it costs but so far i don’t have any complaints.
8:04 PM
StraightUpCigars: Good to know. How often do you have to add more water?
8:05 PM
IamDarren: None so far. The tank holds about a quart and has one of those super absorbent sponges built in. I will keep you posted when i have to fill up.
8:06 PM
Terry1: Heading to Denver tomorrow. Rocky Mountain Cigar Festival is this Saturday. Interested in seeing if there are any changes from last year now that the FDA rules are in force.
8:07 PM
IamDarren: Hopefully they will let you know what to expect. I haven’t read anything new lately.
8:07 PM
StraightUpCigars: Can’t believe it’s that time of year already! Hope you have an awesome time there and smoke/drink your money’s worth!
8:10 PM
IamDarren: One of the online retailers was having a big sale on house brands awhile back and they said it was because they wouldn’t be able to keep manufacturing them. They were all cheap bundle cigars though so i was thinking they were just using that as a reason to sell more cheap cigars for a small percent cheaper.
8:11 PM
IamDarren: When i start seeing Diesels go on sale i will get excited
8:12 PM
StraightUpCigars: The vape part of the law has gotten way more press lately, nothing on the cigar side.
8:13 PM
Terry1: The rules around free samples is what has me the most worried. It was common for the vendors to throw in a couple of cigars if you bought something. Two years ago I ran into one of the Newman’s from Diamond Crown and he handed me a Julius Caeser. I’m guessing that’s not going to happen this year.
8:14 PM
IamDarren: you never know, it might be the opposite. Cigars they know they can’t keep producing they will give lots away of and charge way more for the ones they do keep producing.
8:14 PM
Terry1: They also had a raffle with cigar prizes. Not sure if it will affect that as well.
8:16 PM
StraightUpCigars: I bet they turn their nose up to the new rules nad continue doing those things… just my guess.
8:16 PM
Terry1: I hope so. That was half the fun.
8:16 PM
IamDarren: well into the second third now and i think the strength is slowly creeping up but flavor is still very good.
8:17 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine has gotten intensely rich and buttery. A little bitterness in there too. Finish lingers forever.
8:17 PM
Terry1: Around the halfway mark. Spice has mellowed some. The sweetness has almost a gingerbread note to it. Getting that creaminess too. Good flavors right now.
8:18 PM
IamDarren: agree on the ginger, i really enjoy the spice notes on this one. Finish is smooth and buttery on mine as well.
8:22 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’ve had to do a couple of small burn corrections to it, nothing major. The wrapper along one of the veins is burning slower.
8:24 PM
IamDarren: mine is burning much better and the burn line has evened up
8:24 PM
Terry1: Same here.
8:24 PM
IamDarren: starting to feel more of the strength. Salivating more.
8:25 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, this thing has some kick to it, chugging water like crazy.
8:26 PM
Terry1: The strength is building. Popped the band off without issues.
8:26 PM
IamDarren: I should mention that i just noticed the nice triple cap. The outer cap came off a min. ago and the other two are holding up well.
8:27 PM
StraightUpCigars: Good catch. I’ve had no issues on that end of the stick
8:27 PM
IamDarren: almost to the last third now. Im getting more spice and coffee now. Getting dryer and loosing the buttery finish.
8:31 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine has a delicious bitter coffee flavor with some of that white pepper heat. I like it.
8:32 PM
IamDarren: agreed, as long as the bitterness doesn’t pick up too much.
8:33 PM
Terry1: I agree with the coffee and the pepper but I still am getting a pleasant sweetness that smooths out the other flavors. Not noticing the bitterness on mine.
8:38 PM
Terry1: Feeling the nicotine now. Stronger than what I expected.
8:38 PM
IamDarren: From what i can find Villiger is primarily known for their machine made cigars. Supposedly one of the better brands for machine mades. They must be transitioning to more hand made cigars. Bad timing with the new law though.
8:41 PM
StraightUpCigars: Just did a third burn correction. Some little construction problems, but still happy with it so far.
8:44 PM
IamDarren: was just reading an article about the new law and came across this interesting survey:
8:44 PM
IamDarren: A recent survey supported by the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows current e-cigarette use among high school students has skyrocketed from 1.5 percent in 2011 to 16 percent in 2015 (an over 900 percent increase) and hookah use has risen significantly. In 2015, 3 million middle and high school students were current e-cigarette users, and data showed high school boys smoked cigars at about the same rate as cigarettes.
8:47 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lol, that’s like saying automobile use has increased since 1910… duh they didn’t exist before then! IF teenage boys are buying cigars, it’s to empty them out and fill them with ganja.
8:47 PM
IamDarren: lol good point
8:47 PM
IamDarren: i think the FDA is just trying to make up reasons to target the whole industry and not just cigarettes.
8:48 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yep, it’ll be cash cow.
8:48 PM
Terry1: Yeah I doubt teenagers are buying premium cigars. I agree it’s most likely the cheap machine made ones.
8:49 PM
Terry1: I agree it’s just another way to tax in the name of public safety.
8:50 PM
IamDarren: tax an industry until there is no industry left then find something new to target to help our country crawl out of debt…
8:51 PM
Terry1: About to the end of mine. Sweetness is dominating with a pepper heat. Not getting the coffee so much any more. It’s been replaced with an earthy note.
8:51 PM
StraightUpCigars: Unfortunately we won’t see the “tax” in any measurable manner, it’ll be handed down to us through higher manufacturer prices. It would be easier to get pissed if we got to see just how much it costed us every time we made a purchase.
8:51 PM
IamDarren: i just can
8:52 PM
IamDarren: can’t fathom that it will be easier to for underage people to get ahold of liquor than a cigar.
8:53 PM
IamDarren: the article mentioned that all retailers including online will require photo id
8:53 PM
IamDarren: My cigar is almost finished as well. Mine never got much stronger and flavors are still great.
8:53 PM
StraightUpCigars: Wow, that’s crazy.
8:54 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is about done too. Rating coming soon.
8:57 PM
StraightUpCigars: Good scores! This thing is a good value. Long smoke time too.
8:57 PM
IamDarren: nice flavorful cigar. I would recommend trying this one for sure
8:57 PM
Terry1: Good cigar flavors at a reasonable price. Enjoyed the sweetness throughout the smoke. Would recommend trying it.
