Ventura Cigar Company Project 805 – Cigar Review

Project 805 cigar 2
This week’s cigar review is of the Ventura Cigar Company Project 805.  Project 805 is a blend from the La Aurora factory that uses Andullo tobacco – a Dominican pipe tobacco.  It has a bold cedar smell and a good draw after cutting.  After lighting, the rich, sweet, and spicy flavor is delicious.   We tasted notes of wood and cream.  The finish really lingers for a long time in-between puffs.  Overall, we loved everything about the Project 805.  The other cigars we’ve had that incorporate pipe tobacco used too much of it and it was overpowering.  Ventura used restraint when blending this one.  The flavors were good, the construction was good, and the price is good.  Definitely try these out!

Project 805 cigar 3

7:29 PM
StraightUpCigars: Project 805 for tonight!
7:30 PM
StraightUpCigars: Going to go bundle up and get ready.
7:30 PM
Terry1: Interesting choice. I’ve heard mostly good things about this cigar. I’ll grab it and head outside.
7:33 PM
IamDarren: found it! Headed to the shed
7:41 PM
StraightUpCigars: This Project 805 has a bold cedar smell to it. Draw is good, but snug.
7:41 PM
IamDarren: whats the story on this one?
7:42 PM
Terry1: Very dark wrapper on this cigar with a funky smell I can’t identify. Maybe a charred raisin? I have a good draw with the same note.
7:42 PM
StraightUpCigars: Ventura cigar company, these are made in the La Aurora factory. I bought them on cbid.
7:43 PM
IamDarren: Construction seems decent. A couple medium veins. Wrapper is very leathery and mottled. Im getting a good draw with a musty cedar note.
7:44 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lighting up!
7:44 PM
Terry1: Lighting up. Curious about this one.
7:44 PM
IamDarren: It has pipe tobacco in it. Sounds interesting
7:45 PM
IamDarren: lighting up
7:45 PM
Terry1: Pipe tobacco? That must be the funky smell I’m picking up.
7:46 PM
IamDarren: CI quote: Andullo, a Dominican pipe tobacco, is a fermentation process rather than variety of leaf and its inclusion adds a spicy-sweet element to the Project 805 Maduro
7:48 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is starting out very woody, an oak flavor with a nutty and slightly spicy finish.
7:48 PM
IamDarren: Im liking the first few puffs. It has a Rich and creamy base with some light spice notes and a hint of sweetness.
7:49 PM
Terry1: Initial puffs are good. Getting the spicy element mentioned and wood notes. Draw is on the snug side.
7:51 PM
IamDarren: My draw is perfect and producing lots of smoke. The rich, woody flavor is starting to lighten up and im getting a lot more cream and spice. Really lingering on the finish.
7:52 PM
StraightUpCigars: My finish is like that too, great flavor lingering between puffs.
7:53 PM
Terry1: Getting more spice on mine and the sweetness is coming forward. Creamy texture. Good start so far.
7:55 PM
StraightUpCigars: I like it so far too, definitely something a little different.
7:56 PM
IamDarren: same here, seems very consistent so far.
7:57 PM
IamDarren: its burning perfectly, and i can let it rest between puffs without any trouble
7:58 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’m starting to get some pepper, but also getting a hint of the sweet creamy flavor mentioned earlier.
8:01 PM
StraightUpCigars: Ventura should spell out their name on the band until they’re better known. For some reason I think Verdadero when I look at the V.
8:01 PM
IamDarren: finally dropped a 1″ ash
8:02 PM
IamDarren: strength has really dropped off on mine. Started med-full and is now bordering on mild-medium. Just sweet and creamy with some spice as i approach the second third.
8:04 PM
Terry1: Nice creamy sweetness coming through. There is a slight spicy note in the nose. I am getting a slightly bitter coffee note on the finish. Cigar is smoking well even with the snug draw.
8:05 PM
IamDarren: im also able to detect more of that pipe tobacco flavor coming through now since the richness has faded. Its coming across and a slightly bitter nutty flavor. Its mixing well with the sweetness.
8:06 PM
IamDarren: reminds me of eating brazil nuts
8:09 PM
StraightUpCigars: Construction has been flawless, perfect burn and plenty of smoke. Draw is a hair tight, but as long as its making smoke I don’t care.
8:12 PM
Terry1: This cigar is much sweeter than I anticipated. I’m enjoying this smoke. About halfway and I’m already feeling some strength. I hope it doesn’t get stronger.
8:17 PM
StraightUpCigars: The sweetness is fading on mine and I’m getting a distinct bread flavor. Interesting.
8:18 PM
IamDarren: just past the halfway mark now. Band was a little tough to remove but i got it ok.
8:23 PM
IamDarren: getting a little bit more bitterness now but otherwise the same. Sweetness is still up front with the spice. Really coats the palate and lingers on the finish.
8:23 PM
Terry1: Had a little trouble with the band. Stupid me, I didn’t realize the V was glued down and was the end of the band. It came off cleanly once I figured it out.
8:26 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is full bodied right now, and with some strength to boot. Bold ending.
8:28 PM
IamDarren: mine seems to get stronger the faster i smoke. Letting it rest for 30 seconds or so brings it back down.
8:30 PM
Terry1: Mine is still pouring out the sweetness. Getting the strength too. My mouth is getting hot like from eating jalapenos. It’s been consistent but I am enjoying it. Burn is near perfect.
8:31 PM
StraightUpCigars: Seems like a more subtle use of piipe tobacco in this one than a couple others we’ve tried. Really liking it.
8:33 PM
IamDarren: Agreed. That Spectre by AJ was a little bit much for my taste.
8:34 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, that one hits you the second you take it out of the cello.
8:36 PM
IamDarren: Im sure the type of pip tobacco makes a huge difference as well. They did a good job finding the right one for this blend.
8:38 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine has finished up.
8:39 PM
IamDarren: geez… im just into the last third
8:40 PM
Terry1: I agree they did a good job balancing out the pipe tobacco. It’s there but not overwhelming. I still have a few more minutes left on mine. You can tell Matt is smoking outside in the weather. Speed smoking!
8:41 PM
IamDarren: lol, trying to keep warm from the inside out. lol
8:42 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lol, I guess I thought I was taking it slow
8:44 PM
IamDarren: some entertainment while you wait
8:45 PM
IamDarren: starting to feel this one in my gut. Some hidden strength.
8:46 PM
Terry1: That’s funny. I just watched that episode two nights ago. My daughter has never seen the first three episodes and wanted to see them before seeing the new movie.
8:47 PM
Terry1: I’m done and can rate anytime. Consistent to the end.
8:47 PM
IamDarren: My bother in law isn’t a big Star Wars fan but he saw the new one in the theatre and said it was badass.
8:49 PM
Terry1: It’s been decades since I’ve watched them. It was funny to see what we thought state of the art special affects were in the late 70s.
8:50 PM
IamDarren: Damn fine cigar. Glad we found another one.
8:51 PM
Terry1: Good cigar! Enjoyed trying it. Lots of natural sweetness. Easy to recommend this cigar. I’ll be adding it to my rotation.
8:52 PM
StraightUpCigars: Nice! I liked this cigar a lot. Great flavors.
8:52 PM
IamDarren: Great cigar to start off the new year. Lets keep the momentum going!
