Vegafina Sumum Special Edicion Especial 2010 – Ciagr Review

Try to say the name of this cigar 10 times fast… Vegafina Sumum Special Edicion Especial 2010.  The name is a mouthful, and so is the cigar.  The samples we received from Altadis were large ring gauge toros.  We sat down to review this one and were impressed by the presentation, really nice wrapper and a classy band.  It had a faint, but pleasant sweet cedar smell to it.  We lit it up and were hit with some really nice flavor right off the bat.  Sweet, creamy, and cedary with some spice on the finish.  It started medium bodied and increased to full as a pepper flavor crept in.  The cigar had some complexities that made this a really interesting smoke.  All 3 of our cigars had perfect construction.  Couple the perfect construction with the fantastic flavor, and you have a wonderful cigar.  The relatively high price is offset by the Vegafina Sumum Special Edicion Especial 2010’s  strengths.  We really liked it and I recommend tracking down some of these difficult to find cigars.  Highly recommended!

7:36 PM
StraightUpCigars: Nice! VF Sumum w/ silver band.
7:36 PM
IamDarren: yep, got it. headed out
7:41 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine has kind of a muted cedary smell, not a very distinct smell. Nice looking wrapper. Draw is a bit loose after cutting, wish I would have cut a little shallower.
7:42 PM
IamDarren: draw is decent on mine. Agreed, a kind of sweet cedar note on the cold draw.
7:43 PM
IamDarren: so whats the story behind this one?
7:45 PM
StraightUpCigars: It is an Altadis product. Special release, I think they are still in B&M’s. Samples sent to me by Altadis.
7:46 PM
IamDarren: looks like this thing has tobacco from all over the place
7:47 PM
Terry1: Nice looking cigar. My draw is just about perfect and I get that barnyard aroma on the cold draw.
7:48 PM
StraightUpCigars: Nice! Let’s light em up.
7:48 PM
IamDarren: sweet, bring on the flame
7:50 PM
IamDarren: oh boy, im really liking the first few puffs! Very creamy and sweet.
7:51 PM
IamDarren: its either milk chocolate or cocoa i think with a bit of spice on the finish.
7:52 PM
StraightUpCigars: Took the words out of my mouth. Very good start, RICH flavors with mild body to start.
7:54 PM
IamDarren: retrohale is superb, lots of smoke that really coats the palate.
7:54 PM
Terry1: I’m getting a sweetness, a little spice and a woody note. The smoke is pretty light on the start.
7:55 PM
StraightUpCigars: After setting mine down for a minute, I am getting a cedar flavor also.
7:56 PM
IamDarren: agreed, the finish really lingers on this one and does leave a sweet cedar note. This one is fairly complex i would say.
7:57 PM
IamDarren: lots of resting smoke, might be burning a little fast
7:57 PM
StraightUpCigars: Completely agree. It’s hard to set down, you never know what you will get on the next puff.
7:57 PM
Terry1: Yeah this one is more complex than I expected. Every few puffs I get this blast of pepper then is goes sweet again. Not consistant but it is interesting.
7:59 PM
IamDarren: there is definitely something different about the sweetness. At first I thought it was chocolate but now im thinking molasses or brown sugar. Very rich but not overpowering.
8:02 PM
IamDarren: im glad we picked this one as I have not had supper yet. This seems like it would make a great morning or afternoon smoke. Flavorful but not strong.
8:03 PM
StraightUpCigars: A ton of flavor here too. My only complaint, the burn is starting to get a little off kilter.
8:05 PM
Terry1: I’m an inch in and the pepper has really mellowed on mine. Lots of caramel sweetness maybe a little earth creeping in. Very full flavors. I’m liking it.
8:06 PM
IamDarren: im also about an inch in and although the ash seems to be flowering a bit its still holding on.
8:08 PM
Terry1: My ash just fell off in a solid chunk. I’ve got a good burn on mine. These must be B&M only because I’m having a hard time finding any for sale on the evil Internet.
8:10 PM
StraightUpCigars: That could be, or they are all gone already. I don’t know, but this is a damn good cigar
8:11 PM
IamDarren: looks like they might have a 5er here:

Terry1: I finally found some at Smoke Inn too. If I had a tower humidor I’d probably be tempted to buy some more.
8:13 PM
IamDarren: lol, oh im tempted
8:14 PM
IamDarren: i only promised the wife that i wouldn’t buy until years end so im making a list
8:14 PM
StraightUpCigars: It’s funny, they don’t even state the size. These must be only offered in Robusto. Kind of cool.
8:14 PM
IamDarren: I read somewhere that they originally released them in the UK and they were so popular that they made more and shipped them to the US, but only in one size.
8:16 PM
IamDarren: as i approach the halfway point the spice is starting to pick up a little
8:17 PM
Terry1: Are these regular production or a special release?
8:17 PM
Terry1: With the 2010 label I’d assume special release.
8:18 PM
Terry1: I might have to pick up a box before they sell out.
8:18 PM
StraightUpCigars: I believe special release, but you know how that works out. They will sometimes continue making them until they use all the tobacco that resembles the originals.
8:20 PM
IamDarren: ok according to thecigarnut and a couple other sites they were only officially released in the states around February of this year so I wouldn’t think they would be in such short supply. Maybe they are trying to get the word out so more stores will carry them.
8:23 PM
Terry1: I’m noticing more spice and the sweetness is turning more chocolatey. In the background I get a creamy coffee note. I think I’m going to be sad when this ends.
8:24 PM
IamDarren: agreed, flavors are building somewhat. Don’t be sad, buy some more.
8:25 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, the spice is picking up over here too. This cigar is making me hungry. All the cream, spice, and cedar…
8:25 PM
IamDarren: whole boxes available here:

8:26 PM
Terry1: For around $6 a stick these are worth another taste.
8:27 PM
IamDarren: If you get a box and can hold on to it for awhile I will most certainly split it.
8:28 PM
IamDarren: damn, every puff is adding flavors at this point. Spice is right up front now with the rich sweetness. Im also picking up roasted nuts now and come coffee near the finish.
8:29 PM
Terry1: And surprisingly no strength. My kind of cigar!
8:29 PM
StraightUpCigars: My draw is still a hair loose, but in this case it is a good thing. I am loving the flavors and ALL of the smoke it puts off!
8:29 PM
IamDarren: someone commented on another site and said they have been available overseas since 2006….WTF?
8:30 PM
StraightUpCigars: Just do the math, it makes perfect sense.
8:31 PM
IamDarren: aged to perfection i suppose
8:31 PM
StraightUpCigars: Aged in the future!
8:32 PM
IamDarren: you would think if they new they had a good cigar they would buy tobacco every year and keep making them with 2 year aged tobacco, right?
8:33 PM
IamDarren: kinda like 5 Vegas is doing with the Limitado releases.
8:33 PM
StraightUpCigars: You should work in the cigar industry…
8:34 PM
IamDarren: i don’t doubt that it would be fun, mabye i should look into growing some tobacco since I already farm.
8:35 PM
IamDarren: i don’t know if our climate would work, probably need a greenhouse.
8:36 PM
Terry1: Maybe you can make a cigar out of corn husks.
8:36 PM
StraightUpCigars: Nah, you could grow it just fine. They are only difficult as seedlings, after that they take care of themselves. I read that whole damn book on it. Midwest is plenty good for growing personal use size plots of tobacco.
8:36 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lol!
8:37 PM
IamDarren: well then, maybe you should be in the cigar industry!
8:37 PM
StraightUpCigars: Terry should, he’ll start the cigar line: Cornhuskers
8:37 PM
IamDarren: mine is getting a lot strong now, I would say medium/full. Pepper has entered the mix with the already strong spice note.
8:38 PM
Terry1: Yeah, the cigar would taste like popcorn and dirt. Yummy!

8:38 PM
StraightUpCigars: Better than some we’ve reviewed…
8:38 PM
IamDarren: you would have to age the hell out of that stuff. Trust me, we burn our stalks every year and it does not smell good.
8:40 PM
Terry1: Lots of oils on the wrapper. My fingers are a little sticky.
8:40 PM
IamDarren: you might be able to throw in a little to help with the burn, and cut costs.
8:42 PM
IamDarren: lol, already been done!

8:43 PM
StraightUpCigars: Nice!
8:44 PM
StraightUpCigars: I never had to correct the burn, it corrected itself. Even at the very end of my cigar, I feel it is only in the medium body category. It does not lack any flavor though, lots of coffee and spice.
8:45 PM
IamDarren: yeah the pepper note is now coming and going so i guess its not really in the full category.
8:45 PM
IamDarren: i still have about an inch left
8:47 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’ll be burning my fingers in a 1/4 an inch or so.
8:48 PM
Terry1: You must of liked it.You smoked faster than I did.
8:49 PM
StraightUpCigars: I sure did. At $6 a stick this will score well. There are better values out there, but this one is easily worth the money.
8:50 PM
Terry1: By the way I’m glad Altadis sent these to you. This is a cigar I would have overlooked.
8:50 PM
IamDarren: just like the San Lotano Oval. I would gladly pay a few bucks more for a great stick.
8:51 PM
Terry1: Mmmmm…Oval.
8:52 PM
IamDarren: im ready to rate whenever you are. Im about to burn my fingers and im getting hungry
8:54 PM
Terry1: This is getting spicy at the end.
8:54 PM
Terry1: I’m ready to rate it.
8:56 PM
StraightUpCigars: Nice one. Many props to the folks at VegaFina. Bring your cigars to the states!
8:57 PM
Terry1: Thanks for sharing Matt. I really enjoyed the VegaFina.
8:57 PM
StraightUpCigars: NP, glad I did. This one was fun!
8:58 PM
IamDarren: same here, nice to find another gem.
