Tatuaje Cabaiguan Maduro – Cigar Review

cabaiguan-cigar-1
Up for review is the Cabaiguan by Tatuaje.  This is an interesting sounding cigar, blended by Don Pepin in the Tatuaje factory.  It has a pungent smell to the wrapper and a tight draw after cutting.  After lighting, we loved the sweet cocoa and coffee flavors that dominated the cigar after the midway point.  It’s a fairly mild cigar and doesn’t have a stong nic-buzz, unlike many of the sticks from Tatuaje and Don Pepin.  Overall, this one really surprised us, in a good way.  Loved the flavor and how enjoyable a smoke it was.  It’s expensive, and had some minor construction issues.  Although not perfect, you’ve got to try this one, we really liked it!

StraightUpCigars: Real nice looking cigar. A few large veins in the wrapper. Has a pungent tobacco smell. Draw is pretty tight.
7:41 PM
IamDarren: pretty much the same here. Mine has one medium to large vein. Nice sheen on the maduro wrapper. Packed well. Interesting cold draw flavor. Pungent is a good description. Barnyard, slightly sweet, maybe over-ripe fruit type flavor.
7:42 PM
Terry1: Dark wrapper on this one. Got a strong barnyard aroma as soon as I pulled it from the cello. Looks and feels packed. Draw is on the snug side. Cold draw is the same barnyard and some sweetness.
7:42 PM
IamDarren: This is a popular blend made by Tatuaje. There is a natural and maduro version.
7:43 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lighting this puppy up!
7:43 PM
IamDarren: bring on the flame
7:43 PM
Terry1: Lighting up.
7:45 PM
Terry1: I’ve had many cigar with the natural wrapper and like it a lot. First time with the maduro. Really interested to find out how it compares.
7:46 PM
IamDarren: mine is starting out fairly strong and peppery. Had a buttery character though and a bit of sweetness.
7:50 PM
Terry1: Tight draw on mine. Clipped some more off the cap. Helped a little. Smoke production is light most likely from the tight draw. Getting some sweetness, fruit, mild pepper and cedar.
7:51 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is starting out rich and meaty with cedar, a faint sweetness, and a bit of pepper. Fairly complex.
7:53 PM
IamDarren: might have been the extra “torque” to make the pigtail cap but mine has opened up after working it in my mouth. Flavor is becoming sweeter. Still buttery, ripe fruit type of sweetness, earthy with some pepper on the finish.
7:56 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine has opened itself up too – good thing b/c that pre-light draw was tight!
7:56 PM
Terry1: Still working on mine. It’s getting better.
7:59 PM
IamDarren: smoke production still isn’t great but flavor is nice and rich. Really coating my palate with a deep earthy flavor.
8:00 PM
IamDarren: i have been fighting off a cold so im sure im not picking up on everything but it does seem complex.
8:02 PM
Terry1: Finally pulled out a couple of smaller veins. Draw is now smokeable but not ideal. Mine has gone very earthy with black coffee. Surprised it lost the initial flavors so fast. Maybe they’ll return now the draw has improved.
8:03 PM
StraightUpCigars: Good call, I just noticed a tremendous burst of coffee as well.
8:05 PM
IamDarren: same here, flavor is really transforming as i enter the second third. Rich, earthy, coffee finish. Still some pepper, especially in the sinus. Starting to clear out the sinus congestion
8:07 PM
Terry1: Agree, I’m getting the pepper in the sinus. Nature’s decongestant.
8:11 PM
IamDarren: completely off topic but i was researching pecans today and came across some very interesting info. If you get a chance look up vitamin B17.
8:11 PM
StraightUpCigars: Never heard of it, I’ll look it up.
8:12 PM
Terry1: Starting to get a hint of the sweetness again as I approach halfway.
8:12 PM
IamDarren: im aproaching the halfway mark and mine is really opening up and starting to burn faster. More smoke production as well.
8:17 PM
Terry1: That little bit of sweetness has really improved the flavor of this cigar. Still mostly earth and coffee but I’m enjoying it more. Burn has been good. Draw has opened up and it’s smoking better now.
8:19 PM
StraightUpCigars: Glad your draw improved. Mine is perfect now. Only complaint is with the flaky ash.
8:19 PM
IamDarren: i agree, the added sweetness is creating a very pleasant cocoa type flavor that coats the palate clear through the finish. Very enjoyable.
8:21 PM
IamDarren: perfect flavor combo right now, and its rich but only medium in strength.
8:24 PM
StraightUpCigars: Great smoke so far, I can see why they’re popular. I agree with you guys, getting a little sweeter at this point.
8:31 PM
Terry1: Entering the final third, flavors haven’t changed since the sweetness came back. I am feeling the nicotine now. Burn and draw are good. Enjoying this cigar.
8:31 PM
IamDarren: same here, this one has really turned into a candybar type of cigar. Sweetness is really dominating and coating the palate now.
8:33 PM
StraightUpCigars: For some reason I thought this was going to be a full body beast. Quite the opposite.
8:34 PM
IamDarren: lol, yeah a Tat cigar blended by Pepin. Definitely not what i expected.
8:35 PM
IamDarren: im feeling some strength but its so creamy and sweet that its not bothering me
8:36 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, this one isn’t a heavy hitter. I just have a mild buzz.
8:38 PM
IamDarren: im just starting the last third. Pepper might be making a comeback. Mainly on the finish though.
8:41 PM
IamDarren: burn has been near perfect and the ash has held up well, just been tapping it off in the tray after a half inch or so.
8:43 PM
Terry1: Same here. Sweetness has faded for me. More of the earth and coffee now. Strength is still building but still manageable.
8:43 PM
IamDarren: under and inch left and im feeling the nicotine but flavor is still great. Lips are starting to tingle.
8:43 PM
StraightUpCigars: These are pricey! About $9 each. Thank you.
8:44 PM
IamDarren: lol, did I send this one? I wasn’t sure. I think i may have picked up a fiver on sale from Holts.
8:46 PM
IamDarren: boy this one really lingers. Started smoking slower here at the the end and i can still taste all the flavors long after each puff.
8:50 PM
StraightUpCigars: Linger is right, I can still taste it after setting it downa couple minutes ago! Good smoke.
8:52 PM
IamDarren: im finishing up now, can rate any time
8:52 PM
Terry1: I’m about done too. Getting hot.
8:56 PM
IamDarren: if the first third had performed as well as the last two this would have been almost a perfect rating. Great cigar.
8:57 PM
Terry1: Didn’t care for the cigar when the sweetness disappeared in the first half. The second half was great. Took a point off construction for the super tight draw I had. Good cigar. I do prefer the natural wrapper more.
8:58 PM
StraightUpCigars: I liked how this one transitioned. The price is the only thing that held this one back from a near perfect score from me.
