This week’s group review is of the Sol Cubano Special Dark cigar. It has a really nice oily wrapper and the draw is good too. After lighting it up we were very pleased with the flavor. We were getting sweet creamy flavor with a bold pepper and spice finish. A whole lot of flavor from a value smoke. Unfortunately, it did not take long for some underlying construction issue to rear their ugly head. Two out of the three smokes we had experienced construction issues. A poor burn and difficult draw made these smokes very difficult to enjoy. With the low price and good flavor, the Special Dark is not a total loss, but there are better cheapies out there than this one.

IamDarren: the ligher wrapper is the natural. The one with the darker wrapper is called “Special Dark” and has an extra fermented maduro wrapper. Same blend though.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Let’s do that special dark
Terry1: Special dark works for me. I’ll grab it and head outside.
IamDarren: ok, just to let you know I had to get different sizes so some may be churchills and others robustos.
IamDarren: heading outside
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I got a big old churchill. Heading out, give me a couple of minutes.
IamDarren: pretty sure i have a robusto
IamDarren: pretty excited about the La Terrazas. I should get them this week.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Looking forward to reading your review Terry. Thanks man!
IamDarren: what was it?
Terry1: I went outside my comfort zone and reviewed the Vudu.
IamDarren: did it have some age on it. I think i sent you one a long time ago.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Holy crap, sweet pic!
IamDarren: just clipped my Sol Cubano, nice tight roll with a medium draw. It has a very interesting herbal note on the cold draw.
Terry1: That used to hang off the rear view mirror in my Firebird when I was in high school. Took me awhile to find it again but I thought it would work well with the cigar.
Terry1: The Sol Cubano smells great. I can smell the wrapper just sitting unlit in the ashtray.
IamDarren: too much wind here to smell anything.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Mine has a nice barnyard smell to it. Some large veins, but that can be expected in a churchill sized cigar. My draw is a little tight, I might have to bust out the xicar for a deeper cut.
IamDarren: i used the Palio on mine, just took off about 1/16 of an inch. Worked great.
Terry1: My cigar has a smooth draw and I get the herbal notes on the cold draw. Lighting up.
IamDarren: bring on the flame.
IamDarren: very tasty, lots of sweet spice coming through on the first couple puffs.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Just lit her up. Draw is a hair tight but perfectly acceptable. Pretty good start. Lots of pepper and spice.
IamDarren: well Matt, maybe we will all finish our cigars at the same time tonight since you have the churchill….
Terry1: Great start. Lots of creamy smoke. Getting a nice sweetness, spice, some pepper. I like it!
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I doubt it! This is a huge cigar. If we do, I need to lay off the cigars for a while
IamDarren: flavors seem a lot more balanced after a few months of aging. A nice mix of sweet spice, cream, and pepper on the finish.
IamDarren: PDR is also making a new “Special Reserve” blend that they rolled entubar style. I have been reading some good reviews.
Pinar Del Rio Small Batch Reserve Cubra Store, Pinar Del Rio Small Batch Reserve Cubra 5 Packs, Pinar Del Rio Small Batch Reserve Cubra All Cigars, Pinar Del Rio Small Batch Reserve Cubra Singles
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Buttery texture to the smoke. Sweet and creamy with a very spicy finish. Good stuff!
IamDarren: burn started off a little askew so i corrected it. It seems to be going well now.
Terry1: I’m getting a nice caramel and spice. My burn is doing well. Solid white ash. I am noticing the flavors are mellowing.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Those PDRs look like a real bargain Darren.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: My cigar has a very flaky ash that I had to prematurely knock off. Other than that no complaints about construction.
IamDarren: same here, waiting for my first ash to fall off.
IamDarren: defenitely some hidden strength to this one. Feeling it a little in my gut and the resting smoke is fairly potent.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I would definitely consider this one full bodied at this point. I agree, has some strength too. Very bold flavors, but fairly straight forward at the same time.

IamDarren: nice review Terry, I bet that skull/shrunken head got a lot of comments when you had it in your car.
Terry1: Yeah it did. It was fun. If I ever get a Challenger I might hang it from the mirror again!
IamDarren: i like the new Camaro’s, just personal preferance.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: That new Mustang Cobra looks pretty badass. 640 HP.
IamDarren: Chevy is making a street legal racing corvette that i believe has almost 800 hp. It retails over 100k
StraightUpCigars – Matt: 200 MPH. I don’t know if I would ever trust a mustang to take me to that speed, though
IamDarren: crossing into the second third now, introducing a new flavor. Its a mix of nuts and mild coffee. Very interesting.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I am getting some coffee too. Somebody mentioned resting smoke earlier, my cigar produces a LOT of it. Because of that, not sure this is one I would enjoy smoking indoors.
Terry1: I’m getting the sweetness and coffee. Mine is burning about perfect. Strength is creeping up. So far I like this cigar.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Let me elaborate. Exhaled smoke can be aimed up at the celing in a bar. Resting smoke cannot be aimed. Could irritate the people you are with.
IamDarren: it would be nice to have that problem. I live in BFE and have to enjoy my cigars all by myself.
Terry1: No indoor smoking here either. When I go to San Diego next month, one of my activities is to visit a local cigar shop and enjoy a cigar in a real lounge.
IamDarren: little bit jealous.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: It will only take you about 6 hours to get here at top speed in that Vette of yours. Come on out! You too Terry, buy that Challenger
IamDarren: you already agreed to come here, i almost have this new pellet smoker perfected.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: That is true. We are deciding b/n CO and FL for vaca this summer. If it is CO you are getting a visit
StraightUpCigars – Matt: It’ll take about 6.5 in my Integra
Terry1: I will be in Boulder in August. Getting closer to a visit.
IamDarren: You and Matt should meet up and draft all the way here.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Are you doing that festival? Susie and I are trying to work out when will be good to go on vaca. Unfortunately August is usually a bad time. We may still do it anyways.
Terry1: Yeah I’m going to the festival. Already booked the hotel. Just waiting for tickets to go on sale.
IamDarren: Matt, surely you could come up with some VIP or Media passes.
Terry1: About halfway on the Sol Cubano. Not much new to report on this cigar. Still getting the same good flavors. Burn is perfect, solid ash. Strength is medium-full for me.
IamDarren: Nearing the band and I am starting to get a little of that herbal note i detected on the cold draw. I am really like the complexity on this stick. And it has stayed fairly sweet and creamy all the way.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I thought I could have. But they never replied last year or this year. Oh well.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I’m getting closer to halfway. This is a big boy. Like Terry, not much new to report.
IamDarren: Terry you never said what size you were smoking, do you have the Churchill?
Terry1: I have the robusto for this one. Just took the band off. No problems.
IamDarren: the retrohale really reveals the strength. Not many cigars can hide it as well as this stick. Its a little deceiving.
Terry1: That’s what I thought about the Vudu. Easy to smoke until you retrohaled. Then you knew you were smoking a strong cigar.
IamDarren: the main filler leaf in this cigar is ligero Crillo. I like the combination.
IamDarren: sorry, criollo. i never spell that one right.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Very bold flavor from the criollo, that’s for sure! I am having some issues with the wrapper and binder. They have split on me. I am going to try to burn through it.
IamDarren: damn, mine just went out on me.
IamDarren: maybe a litte too much ligero in this one, burn has been pretty bad.
Terry1: At last I got the good cigar! Mine is performing perfectly.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: It’s about time! Mine will be getting a burn correction shortly.
IamDarren: in the last third now, flavors have become more intense. Lots of pepper now and i am really starting to feel it.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Mine is getting a little hard to puff on. Not much smoke coming through, but there is still resting smoke. It is just not burning well at all right now.
Terry1: I agree, pepper is taking over at the end. I had to switch to a soda at halfway and I am still feeling the strength.
IamDarren: my burn straightened out just before it went out. It has gotten really lopsided again. It seems to be heating up but i am also not getting much smoke. I may have to put it down soon.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I got mine lit long enough to get some flavor I am getting coffee and buttered toast with a pepper and spice finish. Real good flavor right now, jut not much else is going right for it.
Terry1: I’m putting mine down because it’s getting to short to smoke. Mine burned great, lots of smoke. No issues for me. One out of three thou makes me cautious about buying a box.
IamDarren: just put mine down. Flavors were turning bitter and the pepper was drying out my palate. It still lasted about an hour so i can’t complain.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I am entering the final third, but don’t see it holding up too much longer. I think this cigar would be better in a 4.5×50 size. Basically half of mine
IamDarren: yeah i have never liked the churchills as much and i would have gotten all robusots if i could have.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Not bad overall, though. And the price is very affordable on these if I remember right. Some good tobacco in there, just questionable construction.
IamDarren: yep, totally agree.
IamDarren: retail on the robusto is 5 bucks.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Good price. And they can usually be had for less. Good stuff. I am up for an early rating as my stick is about to die a terrible death.
IamDarren: sounds good to me
IamDarren: looks like I have a new AGT to watch.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: AGT?
IamDarren: Americas Got Talent. They have Howard Stern as a judge this year, he is pretty funny.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Ah. Someone at work was telling me about a dude on there who gets hit in the nuts with a sledgehammer for a living. It reminded him of idiocracy.
IamDarren: i could watch it all day, all kinds of talent. Some are kick ass and others are just funny as hell.
Terry1: I’ve been watching that too. Stern is doing a great job.
Terry1: I liked it. But with both of your construcion issues not sure I’d buy a box.
IamDarren: agree, im glad i just got a few for review. I’m crossing my fingers and hoping the La Terrazas are better.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: These were OK cigars. I would not feel comfortable recommending these to anyone though, hence the mediocre rating.
