Sam Leccia White – Cigar Review

This week’s group cigar review is of the Sam Leccia White.  We recently reviewed the Black, and are looking forward to seeing how this one is.  The first thing we noticed is the dry and veiny wrapper – one of our cigars had cracks in the leaf as well.   It smelled cedary and we tasted pepper on the cold draw.  Once lit up, we tasted sweet creamy tobacco with a rich earthy flavor and some pepper.   Later on a fruity bitterness came and went, then came back.  That unique flavor kept it interesting.  This is a strong cigar, it really packs a nicotine punch – more than the Black!  We were very disappointed that the band was over-glued on our sticks and ripped off chunks of the wrapper leaf when we removed it.  Overall, this cigar was good, but had its share of downsides too.  We recommend trying the fire-cured Sam Leccia Black over the White.

StraightUpCigars – Matt: I’m all set up and love the strong cedar smell of the Leccia White. It’
7:39 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: s got a veiny and dry wrapper leaf but a real good raw after cutting.
7:39 PM
IamDarren: im ready also and my draw is nice and easy, also getting a bit of pepper on the cold draw
7:40 PM
IamDarren: couple of construction issues, mine has a small crack in the wrapper in the middle of the cigar and there is a soft spot near the head, hopefully both are minor and won’t affect the smoke.
7:41 PM
Terry1: Yeah the wrapper is rugged. Smells good. The cap came off when I cut it. Doesn’t look like it will be a problem. Ready to light up.
7:42 PM
IamDarren: yep, lets get er started
7:43 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lighting
7:44 PM
IamDarren: very rich, earthy / sweet flavor combo on the first few puffs. Some pepper in the sinus
7:46 PM
IamDarren: nice draw, lots of smoke production
7:46 PM
Terry1: Easy draw and lots of creamy flavorful smoke. Wow, there is a unique sweetness I can’t identify. Very nice. Agree with the pepper in the sinus. Great start.
7:47 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Nice start! I agree with the earthy with some pepper and creamy sweetness.
7:49 PM
IamDarren: im getting a hint of that ripe to over-ripe fruit flavor, its accompanied by that rich earthiness which is really making it tasty.
7:51 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, there’s a faint bitterness to it that adds another layer of flavor.
7:52 PM
Terry1: The sweet and pepper flavors on my Leccia White are in a battle for dominance right now. It’s like jalapeno ice cream. First you get a sweetness then some heat.
7:53 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’m on a tablet tonight, still getting used to it. Got it for $40 on wood. Susie ended up liking it more than me.
7:53 PM
IamDarren: cool, how do you like the touch keypad?
7:54 PM
StraightUpCigars: Its different, I’m slow at it
7:54 PM
StraightUpCigars: Its OK though, nice not lugging around a laptop
7:54 PM
IamDarren: im using the wife’s Lenovo Yoga. Its a great laptop that folds back into a decent tablet. Hope it lasts a long time cause it wasn’t cheap.
7:55 PM
StraightUpCigars: That sounds like the best of both worlds
7:56 PM
IamDarren: the only downside it that its twice as heavy as a normal tablet if you want to use it for that, but having the full sized keyboard is nice.
7:56 PM
StraightUpCigars: I like your description of JAL ice cream terry, this one is well balanced like the first
7:57 PM
IamDarren: im loving the easy draw and smoke output on this stick. Pepper is adding a nice zing to the smoke but it is not overpowering yet.
7:58 PM
IamDarren: ash was getting close to an inch so i tapped it off, burn is near perfect
7:59 PM
Terry1: About an inch in and the sweetness seems to be winning at the moment. Pepper on mine has eased back. I’m really enjoying the flavor now. Burn is perfect o mine too.
7:59 PM
IamDarren: so are you guys rating this one up there with the Black so far?
8:00 PM
IamDarren: might not be quite as complex
8:00 PM
StraightUpCigars: Glad you finally got one with good construction!
8:01 PM
Terry1: The two cigars are both great. Very different thou. Right now it would be tough for me to chose one over the other.
8:01 PM
StraightUpCigars: Hard to say, this one is more understated and less bold. Just a different target audience IMO
8:02 PM
StraightUpCigars: So far the black suits me better, but this one has its place too
8:02 PM
IamDarren: hey Matt, did you end up winning that auction for the other new Leccia blend.
8:02 PM
StraightUpCigars: No, I lost out
8:03 PM
IamDarren: been seeing lots of ads for that reblended CAO Extreme. the Label and box certainly are Extreme.
8:04 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, it looks interesting.
8:04 PM
IamDarren: been trying to find a good deal on the Flathead but they aren’t trying to get rid of any yet.
8:05 PM
StraightUpCigars: Got a cao/flying dog brewery taster today in the mail. First time I ever got beer in the mail
8:06 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’m going to post about it. Each beer has a recommended pairing and you get a discount for buying hem at the same time
8:06 PM
IamDarren: one of the perks of running a cigar website! yeah i got my moonshine in the mail. Thought all the stickers saying ” Fragile, Liquor” were interesting.
8:08 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, everybody is advertising via social media now, such will be in the red this year. The beers will help
8:09 PM
IamDarren: Im approaching the halfway mark, and I agree the sweetness is winning. Body seems to have backed down in the medium range.
8:10 PM
IamDarren: Have to say im also a fan of these simple and elegant band designs. Reminds me of the Diesel a little.
8:11 PM
Terry1: I’m getting about half way and the smoke production dropped way off. So did the flavors. I’m going to purge and let it sit a minute. See if it helps.
8:12 PM
StraightUpCigars: I feel like the fruity bitterness and spice have won on mine, I have less sweetness
8:13 PM
IamDarren: agree with you Terry, my smoke production is backing off. Draw seems to be getting a bit tighter also.
8:13 PM
Terry1: I like the band design but I hate the material they used. It’s like cheap paper with lots of glue. Mine was glued to the wrapper and I had to shred it to remove it.
8:14 PM
IamDarren: thats a shame, its like my father has always said “a little dab will do ya”
8:15 PM
StraightUpCigars: wtf was that?! The brand is impossible to get off. My wrapper is cracked now too. Lame!
8:16 PM
StraightUpCigars: F’in autocorrect
8:16 PM
IamDarren: you were right, i had to be very maticulous to get mine removed. That will get a point or two knocked off the score.
8:17 PM
Terry1: Okay my plan worked. It’s smoking well again and the sweetness is back. I must have been puffing on it too much.
8:17 PM
StraightUpCigars: Weird that the black’s band was fine and this one stinks
8:18 PM
IamDarren: probably just had different people doing each blend
8:19 PM
IamDarren: i do think if the band had some sort of coating it wouldn’t let the glue soak in so much
8:20 PM
StraightUpCigars: I think it’s racism.
8:20 PM
IamDarren: lol
8:21 PM
IamDarren: have you guys seen the new Cocoa Puffs commercial. The muti-color ones have a white Wrestler on the front and the Dark ones have a Black NBA player on the front….
8:21 PM
StraightUpCigars: Your explanation is a little more rational.
8:22 PM
StraightUpCigars: That’s going to stir the pot and the kettle.
8:22 PM
IamDarren: i had to rewind and show the wife, we both had a laugh
8:22 PM
Terry1: I don’t want a racial decision when picking out my cereal.
8:23 PM
StraightUpCigars: It’s going to be good free advertising though when the talking heads get sold of it.
8:24 PM
IamDarren: yep, these days that sort of stuff is what gets attention. too bad, but true
8:24 PM
Terry1: I’m about where the band was. (I can tell because of the crack it left.) I’m feeling some strength in the White. The sweetness has faded again and the pepper has returned. Burn is still good.
8:24 PM
StraightUpCigars: I have enough trouble deciding b/n oreos and saltines already…
8:25 PM
Terry1: Go for the double stuff, equal white and black.
8:26 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lol. I feel it too terry. The black had some strength, this one might have more.
8:26 PM
IamDarren: maybe its just me but the last batch or oreos we got wasn’t right. I think they have changed the filling, Now its not as sweet and has a waxy taste to it
8:27 PM
IamDarren: not getting the strength yet but the bitterness has increased
8:27 PM
StraightUpCigars: Probably using Cisco instead of lard or something now. I’d rather have lard in my system.
8:27 PM
StraightUpCigars: Damnit!!!! I meant crisco
8:28 PM
IamDarren: something else i learned the other day. Because of all the dairy allergies now most of the fast food chains are making all their ice cream non-dairy
8:29 PM
IamDarren: glad i can still count on DQ and Braums
8:29 PM
StraightUpCigars: I want my ice cream dairy, but we have switched to almond milk. Ps, this pad would work better if my thumbs were smaller.
8:32 PM
StraightUpCigars: This one is really peppery now. Good transition, but not as epic as the black was.
8:32 PM
Terry1: Nearing the end. Flavors are about the same. I missed out on the bitterness. The nub thou is getting really hot. I’ll probably have to set this down soon.
8:32 PM
IamDarren: i have been told to try it but im still a fan of the real thing. Actually there is now a push in the industry to start selling whole milk. Its supposed to be much better for you and they can now ship and store it without pasturizing it.
8:33 PM
IamDarren: wow, im just going into the last third. Strength has increased but flavor is still very good. A little less sweetness, more pepper and earth.
8:33 PM
Terry1: I agree. The White has been good but I would pick the Black as the better cigar.
8:34 PM
IamDarren: agreed, the fire cured tobacco really adds a lot of flavor and complexity
8:34 PM
StraightUpCigars: The black had that great coffee flavor most of the way through.
8:35 PM
StraightUpCigars: This is still a damn good cigar though. Wh
8:35 PM
StraightUpCigars: Is the price the same?
8:36 PM
IamDarren: i will check
8:37 PM
IamDarren: haven’t upgraded the internet yet so bear with me
8:38 PM
IamDarren: black is slightly higher, less than 50 cents per cigar
8:39 PM
Terry1: I’m done with mine. It got too hot. Strength ended just above medium for me. Good flavorful cigar. I’ll smoke more of them. My only real gripe was with the band.
8:39 PM
StraightUpCigars: At that price this isn’t a bad buy, but even beginners would be happier with the black, this one some kick.
8:40 PM
IamDarren: i would say this is more of a traditional cigar done very well. I think fire cured tobacco is a hit.
8:42 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Well said. Mine’s about finished too, rating in a second.
8:42 PM
IamDarren: i have less than an inch left and can rate any time
8:45 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Tough one to rate, I feel like the score is harsh, but oh well. Good flavor, band ruined construction, wrapper was ugly and cracked easy with the band, price is a little high. This is not in any way a bad buy, but there’s better out there.
8:45 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Oh, and I did enjoy it BTW
8:46 PM
IamDarren: mine had some construction issues from the start, but i hated to bump it too much since the draw and burn were so good. Overall it was good but lacked complexity and flavor transitions.
8:46 PM
Terry1: I agree. All good points. I liked it enough to buy more.
