Romeo y Julieta Media Noche – Cigar Review

This week’s group cigar review is of the Romeo y Julieta Media Noche.  This cigar has a very dark wrapper leaf (hence the name) and a chocolatey smell.  Once lit up, we tasted a coffee and chocolate flavor that was complimented by some spice on the finish.  As we continued to smoke it took on a deep espresso flavor with some pepper and a ton of cinnamon-like spice.  Overall, we really liked the flavor and the construction was pretty good on it.  It’s worth noting that we recommend this over the H. Upmann Media Noche.  The price is slightly higher than we’d prefer, but definitely think it’s worth a try.

StraightUpCigars – Matt: The RYJ Media Noche has a nice sweet chocolate smell to it. A couple of medium veins on the pitch black wrapper. Perfect draw.
7:46 PM
IamDarren: just clipped the double cap, I agree Terry, I get a chocolatey note and a hint of spice on the cold draw
7:47 PM
Terry1: Let’s light them up!
7:47 PM
IamDarren: you got it
7:48 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Lighting!
7:50 PM
IamDarren: im getting a mix of earth and spice for the base note, followed by a bit of that sweet chocolate. Finish is dry though. Not what I expected.
7:50 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Bitter-sweet espresso right off the bat. Has a fairr amount of spice on the finish.
7:51 PM
Terry1: I’m getting the chocolate note and a coffee note. Good draw with plenty of smoke.
7:53 PM
IamDarren: mine seems to be mellowing and getting sweeter with each puff, draw was a bit tight at first but I rolled it and got it to open right up.
7:54 PM
IamDarren: watch the ash, mine just fell in my lap
7:54 PM
IamDarren: picking up a little richness, maybe more of that chocolate coming through now. Still a hint of spice to keep it interesting.
7:55 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Thanks for the heads up, I lightly tapped it and it fell right off.
8:01 PM
Terry1: I’m not getting any spice on mine. The flavors are about the same, sweet, coffee but they are mellowing out. I’m getting an odd bitter after taste in my mouth that I’m not liking.
8:03 PM
Terry1: Have you noticed all the little white dots on the ash? Any idea what causes them?
8:03 PM
IamDarren: I have seen that before on other aged maduro wrappers, not sure what it means though
8:05 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: My ash is too short to look at them, but I’d guess it’s the pores (or stomata – had to look that one up).
8:06 PM
IamDarren: spice seems to be picking up especially in the retrohale as I cross into the second third. Nice mix of flavor at this point.
8:08 PM
Terry1: Suddenly I have pepper. In just a few puffs it came on strong. Woke up my palate.
8:10 PM
IamDarren: i think that my spice note might be building twords a cinnamon note with a hint of pepper on the end. Really liking where it is headed.
8:11 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Mine is buildding too, coming through as a richer espresso at the moment.
8:12 PM
IamDarren: huh, looks like this one has a San Andres Maduro wrapper
8:13 PM
IamDarren: retail is around the $6 mark
8:14 PM
Terry1: The way the first third was mellowing I thought we were going to end up with a tasteless cigar but this second third really punched up the flavors. I’m liking the spice and sweet combination. Burn has been perfect so far.
8:15 PM
IamDarren: same here, good construction except for the loose ash. Flavor is pretty darn good right now
8:15 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Yep, this one is definitely heading in the right direction.
8:20 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I am getting more spice than ever, a cinnamon-like spice that is truly unique and delicious.
8:22 PM
IamDarren: agreed, very happy with this one so far. At the halfway point now.
8:24 PM
Terry1: Bands popped off without incident. Yeah this is a good cigar.
8:31 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Deep, rich espresso with tons of that sweet spice. Really good right now. I like this final third and thee first the best. Like Darren said, only complaint is the annoying ash.
8:33 PM
Terry1: Into the final third. Spice has mellowed some, it’s getting sweeter again. The ash on mine has been doing well after that first inch.
8:42 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: My ash has gotten better, but still isn’t great.
8:43 PM
IamDarren: mine taps off very easy at a half inch so i haven’t been taking a chance
8:44 PM
IamDarren: strength seems to be building a little. Pepper is starting to build and cover up the spice a little. Getting plenty of espresso now.
8:45 PM
Terry1: I’m feeling the strength a little as I approach the nub. Great flavors. Agree with the espresso note.
8:48 PM
IamDarren: Now im trying to remember how much i liked the H. Uppman version…. Im thinking it was good but not this good.
8:48 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I agree, I like this better than the H Uppmann.
8:50 PM
Terry1: I agree. It’s better. I’m almost done.
8:52 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Mine is getting close. I’ll get some numbers figured out.
9:00 PM
IamDarren: 6 retail isn’t too bad for these, and i know you can get them for way less on the auction sites, Definitely one to keep in the rotation i think.
9:01 PM
Terry1: Good cigar. I’d buy a fiver to keep some on hand.
9:02 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I like it. Still a little expensive on MSRP (based on Cigar.com single), but that cinnamon spice at the end made it worth it. Fun stick!
