This week’s group cigar review is of the Romeo Y Julieta 1875. Touted as the original Romeo, we’re looking forward to trying it. It has a spicy tobacco smell, a great looking wrapper leaf, and the draw is nice after cutting. Once lit up, it has an earthy and sweet creamy flavor with a hint of spice. It’s very mild bodied. One of the cigars had fairly severe construction issues for most of the smoke with one side burning much faster than the other. Later in the cigar there was a coffee flavor with a tangy kick that we enjoyed. Overall, this is a pleasant, mild yet flavorful cigar. It was surprising that one of the cigars was awfully constructed, that’s usually not a problem with RYJs. For an RYJ this is fairly priced, and we recommend picking one up next time you’re looking around at a B&M store.

StraightUpCigars – Matt: Ooooh, this Romeo y Julieta 1875 has a spicy tobacco smell and a perfect draw after cutting.
Terry1: My cigar feels a little soft but the draw is fine. Nice looking wrapper. Ready to light.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Lighting up.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Very mild but flavorful earthy and creamy start with the faintest spice. Tastes good.
Terry1: Light up easily. Nice opening flavors. Getting a spice, earth and a sweet vanilla.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Vanilla is an excellent description of what I’m tasting too.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Just noticed you can get a 3-pack on CI for $12.50. $4.15 isn’t bad for RYJs at that low of a quantity.
Terry1: I didn’t know much about this cigar so I looked it up on CI too. Indonesian wrapper is something new to me. Looking at it I was thinking Habano. So far it’s burning well and has a decent flavor.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Indonesian wrapper is strange, didn’t notice that. I would have guessed habanno too.
Terry1: Funny as soon as I typed my last statement the burn goes all wonky. One side is a good half an inch ahead of the other. And I’m noticing if I let the cigar rest too long it acts like it went out. I have to puff several times to get it going again. Probably a result of it being underfilled.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Bummer! Mine is hanging in there just fine at the moment. The first ash looks like it will fall soon though.
Terry1: I ashed and I can see two voids in the filler. One is near the side that’s burning fast. So that explains the poor burn. Flavors are still okay.
Terry1: Since I ashed it’s now drawing like a straw. I think I’m going to have a rough time tonight. Glad your’s is doing well.
Terry1: And it went out while I typed.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Shoot! What on earth is happening, very unusual for an RYJ
Terry1: I agree. Usually there very reliable.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Mine is taking on a fruity tangy flavor that I am liking.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Maybe using the cutter to cut a chunk off will solve the problem with yours.
Terry1: Man I hate to rate this cigar based on this one stick. I think I just got a dud. The smoke is very light now with the open draw and it’s heating up. I can still taste a bit of the sweetness.
Terry1: Okay so I carefully squished it down to an oval shape and it seems to have helped. It’s now smoking like it did at the first. Getting more of that spice and sweetness.
Terry1: Plus one for the wrapper. Not many wrappers are that pliable.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I think it’s completely fair to rate based on the one, it will be balanced out with mine. They sent me these after all.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: This is a nice wrapper leaf, I’ve been chewing on mine.
Terry1: The band on mine came off easily. Burn is still way off but the side that had the void just left a hole in the ash. Maybe I burned threw it.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I hope so, b/c I really like the way mine is tasting right now.
Terry1: Yeah as much trouble as I’m having the flavors have been good.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Mine is an interesting balance b/n a coffee flavor, a tanginess, and some sweetness.
Terry1: This is interesting I looked up the cigar on the Famous site and it lists a Sumatra wrapper. Now I don’t know what this wrapper is.
Terry1: Never mind it’s a Sumatra from Indonesia.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: That makes sense.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: The longer I let it sit b/n puffs, the more I like the flavors. It’s difficult though.
Terry1: And it’s shade grown which explains the color. I usually think of a darker wrapper when I see a Sumatra.
Terry1: It may be all the puffing I did but I’m feeling a little light headed. This one is sneeky strong.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Yeah, it’s got some kick to it doesn’t it
StraightUpCigars – Matt: That band comes off SO easy! You’re right. Bonus points on that. Have you burned through the void now?
Terry1: I must have burned threw the void because the other side actually caught up. It’s now burning evenly.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Thank goodness. I’m liking the second half of this one.
Terry1: And I’m misspelling through. I must be getting dizzy.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Lol!
Terry1: I’m liking the flavors right now. It’s still creamy, sweet with that hint of spice.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I am too. I’m getting a richer coffee flavor in there as well.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: For how terrible your was in terms of construction, mine was darn near perfect. The burn line is straight with a nice looking white ash.
Terry1: Other than construction this was a good flavorful cigar. I liked it enough to try it again. Maybe the next one will do better. I’m done with mine.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Ok, rating in a sec.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Good cigar. Not overly complex, but pleasant flavors. Easy to smoke and priced fairly. I’d hate to buy one and end up with it having construction like yours though.
Terry1: I’d have to smoke several more before committing to a box purchase.
Terry1: It did have a pleasant flavor profile. One I think most smokers would enjoy.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I hear ya. The construction issues were game changer on yours.
Terry1: It’s too bad Darren couldn’t make it. It would have been interesting how his sample would have smoked.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Yeah, I know it. If his was like yours it there’s no way we could recommend it.
