Darren, Terry, and I sat down the other night for another group review in the chat room. This time we smoked the Punch Rare Corojo 10th anniversary. To read out full conversation, scroll to the chat below. In summary, we all agreed that this cigar got off to a great start. At roughly the halfway point, the cigar began to suffer from blandness. Our samples were constructed perfectly, but the lack of complexity in the final half was damaging.
Terry1: I’ve got the Punch.
StraightUpCigars: Me too. Love the sweet earthy smell of this thing.
IamDarren: the wrapper on this cigar seems pretty thin and fragile but I do like the smell.
StraightUpCigars: I think the wrapper looks very nice w/ only small veins. The construction is solid and evenly packed. I do have 1 flake spot on the wrapper = -1
StraightUpCigars: Lighting up!
IamDarren: cold draw is a little tight but there is a nice buttery character to it.
IamDarren: also lighting up
IamDarren: first few puffs are also very buttery with a nice pepper finish.
Terry1: I like the box press. My wrapper is really smooth and feels velvety. Draw is good and I’m getting just generic tabacco flavor.
StraightUpCigars: Very creamy caramel flavor with earth and pepper on teh finish. Good start
IamDarren: yeah, it has a nice savory characteristic without being too strong. I would put this right in the medium bodied category. Starting to get a little touch of spice on the tip of my tounge now.
IamDarren: good burn, decent amount of smoke
Terry1: I’m getting some pepper, some wood notes and a little sweetness. Agree on the medium body.
StraightUpCigars: Great draw as well.
Terry1: I’m getting a sour grass note late in the finish. Not caring much for that.
StraightUpCigars: I am getting a similar hint of bitterness. Still pleased overall at this point.
Terry1: I keep thinking my cigar has gone out. There’s very little resting smoke.
IamDarren: i let mine sent for a couple min. and the bitterness was gone.
StraightUpCigars: Hard to pinpoint exact flavors on this one. Seems well balanced and unique.
IamDarren: mine has already lost the bitterness and pepper, now just creamy, buttery, with a hint of sweetness and cedar on the finish.
Terry1: I’m liking what I’m tasting, wood, earth and sweetness. Good even draw, plenty of creamy smoke and solid grey ash.
IamDarren: my ash already dropped off in the tray, i wouldn’t let it hold on too long.
Terry1: Just tapped mine off. Didn’t take much.
IamDarren: the finish is very interesting, I thought it was cedar but it is slowing picking up a citrus flavor.
StraightUpCigars: Great even burn. I am chewing on this one more than I usually do. Hard to put it down.
IamDarren: having a little trouble removing the small band
StraightUpCigars: I did too, but the large one slid right off.
IamDarren: yeah, im liking this cigar a lot. One word comes to mind… Smooth.
StraightUpCigars: Mine still has that tame bitterness to it. Sometimes I think I like it, other times I don’t. Very earthy flavor profile with spice and some sweetness here and there.
Terry1: My bands were too tight to slide off but they peeled off without any problems.
StraightUpCigars: I’m still not even to the halfway mark on it. I would consider it medium approaching medium/full.
Terry1: I still get a little bitterness too. Makes me wants to puff again to get the smooth flavors back.
IamDarren: I just made a point to slow down and only take a draw about once a minute. I don’t have any bitterness and the pepper has almost completely faded.
IamDarren: i’ve noticed the cherry on this one seems to glow brighter than others i have smoked. Maybe it just tends to burn a little hot.
StraightUpCigars: I think it does. It still does not smoke quickly though.
Terry1: Agree the pepper is all but gone. There’s still a little spice in the sinus. The flavors are fading on mine. Just getting a light wood note and a little sweetness. I’m about halfway. Maybe medium in strength at this point.
Terry1: I almost typed a little woody but didn’t think that would be appropriate.
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, I retracted my “my cherry is blood red” comment as well.
StraightUpCigars: I am now getting less of the earthy “hay” flavor I was getting earlier. Cedar is creeping in and this cigar is mellowing out. Still some pepper on the finish, though.
Terry1: I approaching the final third and if there are any flavors I’m not picking them up. This cigar has gone bland for me.
Terry1: I’m a bit disappointed. For a 10th anniversary cigar there’s not much to be excited about.
IamDarren: mine is going south also, only getting a little creaminess and some citrus on the finish.
StraightUpCigars: I like the overall taste of this cigar, notice I don’t say flavor profile. It is very 1 dimensional but still enjoyable in my book. Even though I don’t play golf, this is a golf course cigar.
StraightUpCigars: Excellent construction and good tasting, but less than complex or exceptional.
IamDarren: not a super premium, but defenitley better than your average yard gar.
IamDarren: with a little over an inch left mine went out on me. I think i will let it go.
StraightUpCigars: MY cap got so wet from my chewing that it peeled off like a wet bandaid.
StraightUpCigars: Worth noting, I cut pretty shallow on this one.
IamDarren: what is the price point on this one?
Terry1: Construction was great. It started out promising but ended with a slow burning whimper. I wouldn’t waste my time with another one. Nothing really bad about it but nothing to keep my attention either.
StraightUpCigars: 6.75 single 125 box of 25. Not TOO bad, on famous.
IamDarren: It kinda reminded me of the Flor De Gonzalez. Smooth and creamy. FDG also put out an anniversary stick but they are only selling them by the box.
StraightUpCigars: “It started out promising but ended with a slow burning whimper. I wouldn’t waste my time with another one. Nothing really bad about it but nothing to keep my attention either.” – – Sounds like an ex-girlfriend
Terry1: There’s too many other better cigars at that price point for this to be attractive enough for me to buy again. (Like an old hooker.)
StraightUpCigars: Terry your cigars are running late b/c of the pm mishap, but darren yours are on the way as of today.
Terry1: Well I’m done with the Punch. Too bad, I really wanted to like this cigar but a thumbs down for me.
IamDarren: Yeah, and i don’t know that aging would do this one any good. Any mellower and this one will have no flavor at all.
StraightUpCigars: I’m stuck in the middle. I thought it was pleasant but not fantastic. I am still getting flavor out of the final third now, but I have tar built up at the head providing most of that.
