Up for review is the Perdomo Reserve Champagne Sun Grown cigar. We’ve had some of the other Champagnes and thought they were good, mild cigars. This is a nice looking cigar with a perfect draw after cutting. Once lit up, there was a nice play between sweet creamy and peppery flavor. We also tasted roasted nuts, and a bit of coffee. The flavors mellow in the middle third, but come roaring back for the final third. Overall, this cigar packs a ton of flavor for a mild/medium body cigar. It’s a bit more expensive than other Perdomo sticks, but is definitely still a good value.

StraightUpCigars – Matt: Funky raisin-like smell on the wrapper. Draw is perfect after cutting. Nice looking stick, I like the band too.
IamDarren: my wrapper has a few flaws, one of them is a split that is partially covered by the band. Draw is about right, just a little resistance. Getting a creamy chocolatey note on the cold draw with some grass or woody flavor mixed in.
Terry1: This is a nice looking cigar. Draw on mine is perfect too. Getting cedar, chocolate and roasted nuts on the cold draw. Ready to light up.
IamDarren: bring on the torch
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Lighting!
IamDarren: Starting out nice. Sweet and creamy up front. Hint of spice and some of that roasted nuts you mentioned. Very balanced and smooth.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Mine has started out pretty interesting. Very creamy and cedary up front, but then a bold pepper blast comes in on the finish and lingers
IamDarren: no pepper on mine yet
IamDarren: lit easily and is burning well
Terry1: I’m liking how the Champagne Sun Grown is starting. Easy draw, plenty of smoke. I’m getting a nice sweetness and cedar. Pepper developing in the sinus.
IamDarren: spice starts to pick up and get a little bitter if i smoke fast
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Some really delicious sweet cedar puffs on my last few. Tasting real nice!
IamDarren: just tapped off the first ash. Smoking perfectly. Still nice and creamy with just the right amount of spice and sweetness. Might be mellowing since i can’t taste the roasted nuts any more.
Terry1: Pepper is a little inconsistent for me right now. I’ve smoked about an inch. I can take one or two puffs and get mild pepper and sweetness, then the third puff is overwhelming pepper.
IamDarren: might be getting a hint of pepper but its very light
StraightUpCigars – Matt: It’s perfectly balanced on mine, loving the play between sweet and peppery.
IamDarren: mild to medium body on mine going into the second third. Without much pepper mine is lacking a little in complexity but still tasty.
Terry1: Starting to pick up a vegetal, almost bitter note on the finish. Pepper has settled down on mine. More consistently on the mild side. The sweetness is blending well with it now. Much better.
IamDarren: well i decided to take your advice. Spent a lot on my cigar stash to let them dry out because i skimped on a decent humidifier. Found a Hydra LG on the bid site.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Nice! That will make life way easier for you.
IamDarren: well i am hoping. I will keep you guys posted.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Band popped right off.
IamDarren: Mine came off easily as well. The wrapper split did not continue under the band.
Terry1: My band popped off too. Burn is a little wavy but seems to be burning on all sides.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Mine got off kilter for a second, but has corrected itself.
IamDarren: so whats new with you guys. Did you get all your renovations finished up Terry?
Terry1: Yeah the floor is done. I’ll send you some pics as soon as I find the stupid cable for my phone. I did finish a cool cigar art project last week. Took three Partagas boxes with the clear lids and made lights out of them. They turned out better than what I expected.
IamDarren: Sweet. very creative
StraightUpCigars – Matt: That sounds sweet!
Terry1: I’ll send you both some pics.
IamDarren: since i have run power in my cabinet for the hydra i was thinking about mounting a couple of small led lights in there
StraightUpCigars – Matt: That would be awesome.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Have the lights change color when you open the door.
IamDarren: well i did find some colored led strip lights that have a tape backing that i could just stick to the back. I could wire them to a small switch that activates when i open the door. Or just have an external switch so i can use it like a night light.
IamDarren: How did you wire yours up Terry?
Terry1: Don’t laugh too hard but I used Christmas lights. I just plug them in.
IamDarren: i have a neighbor that bought a glass cutting drill bit. they take old glass jars and wine bottles and fill them with christmas lights. They sell them for 5 or 10 bucks a peice.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: That doesn’t sound hard to do.
Terry1: I need one of those drill bits. I have another idea for a table lamp using cigar boxes and a whiskey bottle.
IamDarren: So are you making all of this to go in a smoking room?
Terry1: That would be the long term idea. I need one of my kids to move out so I can transform their bedroom to a man cave. My daughter is 21 and will be done with college in two years. Hopefully she’ll move out soon after.
IamDarren: Nearing the final third. Flavor is picking back up again. Still sweet and creamy up front but the roasted nuts and a hint of coffee are creeping in on the finish.
IamDarren: Nice plan. Too bad im about 15 years behind you
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Mine has picked up some body. Tasting that roasted nuts you mentioned.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Looks like people are selling rare cigars on Ebay, not allowed, but they can’t catch them all. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_sop=16&_nkw=undercrown&LH_Complete=1&LH_Sold=1&rt=nc&_trksid=p2045573.m1684

Terry1: Flavors on mine are creamy and sweet. Getting that coffee note and the roasted nuts. Burn has evened up but the wrapper cracked. Hasn’t affected the cigar yet.
IamDarren: I like Liga Privada cigars but not at those prices. But power too them if people are willing to pay it.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Pretty crazy money for those.
IamDarren: I actually know a guy who pretty much only smokes Ligas. However, i don’t think he has tried very many other cigars. I think some people assume that just because they are super expensive means they are the best. I know of at least five other cigars that i think taste just as good for half the price.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: A super premium like those is nice every once in a while, but if that’s all you smoke they’d get all. Too much of a good thing.
Terry1: My cigar is getting sweeter as I smoke through the final third. Very nice right now. I am starting to feel the nicotine. That is my one gripe with Perdomo cigars. He likes to make them strong.
IamDarren: Its been a long time since i had the regular champagne line but im betting that is why they made this cigar. People wanted similar flavor with a littl more body. Mine is hitting on all cylinders now. Great flavor with a little strengh. Probably medium to medium full now.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I like where it has gone. Mild for much of the smoke, but has an entirely different character here at the end.
Terry1: I agree. It’s been a good journey.
IamDarren: not much left on mine, and im just starting to feel the nicotine
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I’m feeling a but of strength, but it’s not too bad. Nothing compared to last week’s!
IamDarren: which one was it?
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Henry Clay Stalk Cut – strongest I’ve ever smoked.
Terry1: Matt used the term beast and it was.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I was completely non-functional the rest of the night.
Terry1: I’m done. Ready to rate.
IamDarren: lol, guess i will have to be careful with that one
IamDarren: isn’t that when they cut off the whole plant and hang it
Terry1: Yeah it took a couple of hours before my head stopped spinning.
Terry1: I believe your right. They hang the whole plant.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I had a hard time rating this one. Price is a hair higher than other Perdomos. Good flavor and nice transition, but somehow left a little to be desired. Solid stick.
IamDarren: i really enjoyed it for a primarily mild to medium bodied stick. Don’t find too many cigars that are in that body range with great flavor. Middle was a bit bland but it was tasty from start to finish.
Terry1: Good flavors with some transition between the start and end. Did get a little strong for me but not bad. If you like the Champagne I’d recommend trying this version.
