For this week’s group review we sat down to smoke the Perdomo Champagne Noir. We’ve had some success with Perdomo’s sticks in the past, so we’re hoping for similar results. It had a nice earthy smell to it and very good pre-light construction. This cigar has a sweet earthy and creamy flavor profile with a little spice on the finish. We also detected some chocolate flavor in there. In typical Perdomo fashion the construction was perfect on all three of our sticks. We really like the flavor and all agreed that it is one of our favorite Perdomos. The price can’t be beat, so this one scored very well. Give it a try, or buy a box!

IamDarren: nicely constructed stick, getting rich tobacco and chocolate scent from the wrapper.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Very earthy smell. Good construction with a nice draw on a shallow cut. Earthy smell and some pepper on the cold draw. Seems like the whole package!
IamDarren: agree, pretty decent draw here
Terry1: Perdomo knows how to make a nice looking cigar. I get the typical barnyard off the wrapper and an earthy cocoa on the cold draw.
IamDarren: band is pretty loose, i think i could slide it off right now if i wanted too.
IamDarren: i think im ready to light up
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Me too. Lighting.
IamDarren: wow, very sweet and creamy to start!
Terry1: Really nice start. Getting chocolate and mild spice flavors. Very creamy.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Agree with both. Very flavorful start!
IamDarren: good amount of spice on the retrohale, i like it a lot.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Excellent flavor right now. It’s hard to set it down!
Terry1: I see the wrapper has been aged in bourbon barrels. Not sure what that did to the flavor profile but it’s interesting. Seems labor intensive to stuff barrels with tobacco.
IamDarren: so Terry i assume this is an extension of the regular Reserve Champagne? I wonder if the blend is completely different.
Terry1: From what I know it’s the same binder and filler but has the maduro wrapper.
IamDarren: I had the one with the Connie wrapper about a year ago and it had a totally different flavor profile. I suppose the wrapper can make a lot of difference.
Terry1: I’m on the fence with the regular Champagne. I’ll smoke it if I have one but it’s not one I seek out. The Noir is something I would seek out. Much better IMO.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I set it down for a minute, then on the next puff had the biggest burst of sweetness! Pure cane sugar flavor. That was cool.
Terry1: I noticed the same thing. Smoke it slow and the sweetness really ramps up.
IamDarren: this stick is defenitely dominated by sweetness, very enjoyable.
IamDarren: my burn line is getting a little lopsided
IamDarren: im starting to get more of a maple syrup flavor on the finish.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Mine is still smoking evenly. It is a real treat right now.
Terry1: I’m liking the play between the sweetness and the spiciness. Mine is sweet for a few puffs then a burst of spice comes through.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Same here.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: So I got a HUGE box of cigars today… holy cow!
IamDarren: seems to be burning fairly slow too, im only in about 3/4 of an inch.
IamDarren: thought you guys need more selection
IamDarren: those little A Fuente Maduros have been in my humi for almost 4 years
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Is the smaller bag to be set aside for reviews?
IamDarren: yep, that bag has the review sticks. They are the same ones that i sent Terry.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Very generous! Thanks man. I don’t think I will be able to top that one…
IamDarren: you know me, i like to be on top…
StraightUpCigars – Matt: That creepy…
IamDarren: lol… i meant “in general”
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Oh…….
IamDarren: anyway, I just wanted to share the wealth. All those cigars are just going to waste if i never get to smoke them, and you guys are the reason why i like to review them so much.
Terry1: I’m getting towards the end of the first third and mine is getting more earthy. The sweetness and spice have toned down some. Very good balance right now. Burn is good and the ash fell off in a solid one inch chunk.
IamDarren: i just tapped mine off, very nice solid ash
Terry1: Thanks Darren. Cigars are perfect for sharing.
Terry1: And now with IPCPR over looks like there’s going to be hundreds of new cigars to try and share!
Terry1: Honestly, if I had a cigar shop I don’t know how you decide what to carry. There’s too many choices.
IamDarren: yeah, my wife has been very agreable lately. Sometimes i wish she would get on my case more. I have been buying a lot more than i have been smoking.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Well, we aren’t going to stop you!
IamDarren: lol, yeah that is usually my excuse too. Honey, these are for my next trade OK.
Terry1: I actually used that excuse. LOL
IamDarren: she thinks its cool that i have been contributing to the site and seen how much it has grown since i first joined.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: She’s awesome! Just posted some IPCPR videos from General.
IamDarren: cool, i will have to check that out
IamDarren: almost at the halfway point, spice has increased a bit. Defenitely more earthy. Still a little underlying sweetness though.
Terry1: I’m about halfway and WOW I’m liking the flavors right now. No rough edges. Just a smooth creamy sweet earthy flavor. Although I will have to remove the band to smoke the second half. It’s big.
Terry1: And in typical Perdomo fashion it popped right off.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: It’s been a while since we smoked a perdomo. The quintessential value brand.
IamDarren: I try to keep some Limited Oscuros. I think i got my last pack for 2 bucks a stick.
IamDarren: its hard to find a deal on the Noirs though.
IamDarren: have either of you tried a Patriarch? I think those are their premium sticks.
Terry1: I don’t think I’ve tried the Limited Oscuros. I’ll have to pick some up.
IamDarren: the Lot 23s are quite good as well.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I haven’t had those. The lot 23’s are real good. Love the band on those too.
Terry1: I’ve had the Patricarch Connecticut. Heavy on the pepper. Not what I expected but it was worth trying.
IamDarren: I think my second or third box purchase was the Lot 23 Maduros. They are actually a puro from one single field of one farm.
IamDarren: wow this is a slow burner, im not even to the last third yet. Flavors are getting darker. Started to detect a little charred oak on the finsih. Spice is also picking up a bit.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Yeah, at this point I am tasting charred oak w/ chocolate and a spicy/peppery finish. Still great and no burn corrections.
IamDarren: burn straightened out but is getting lopsided again.
IamDarren: i think it may be heating up since the resting smoke has increased quite a bit since the first half.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I can feel this one. How’s the strength, Terry?
Terry1: I’m starting to feel it too.
IamDarren: set mine down for a min to let it cool down and it almost went out on me. I think the humidity might be affecting mine a little.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Could be. We got some rain too… it was an awesome and scary storm. No damage for once
IamDarren: the first round came on Saturday, we didn’t get much rain but the wind and lightning was pretty crazy.
Terry1: We’re getting dry lightning. No rain more fires. All the moisture is staying south of where I’m at.
IamDarren: hope the fires stay away from you
IamDarren: when does hurricane season start? I heard that we are supposed to start getting more rain.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: That would be nice. I’m buying trip insurance for our Florida vaca in Oct.
IamDarren: lol, they sell insurance for everything now. We can now buy insurance for temps and rainfall.
Terry1: I’m at the nub and setting it down. Good to the last puff but my head is swimming now. lol
StraightUpCigars – Matt: It is a strong one… very surprising for a Perdomo.
IamDarren: same here, i still have about a half inch left and im really enjoying it. The sweetness has lasted the whole way with the addition of charred oak and some chocolate.
IamDarren: i started feeling the strength a little but i would still call this stick medium to medium/full at the end.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Shall we rate em?
IamDarren: thanks for this one Terry!
Terry1: Consistantly good for the Perdomo Champagne Noir. Another Perdomo hit!
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Yeah, very impressed with this Perdomo.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Probably my favorite of theirs yet.
IamDarren: i need to get another Lot 23 then i can say for sure but its defenitely one of their best.
