PDR AFR-75 – Cigar Review

PDR AFR-75 Cigar 2

Up for review is the Pinar Del Rio AFR-75.  This cigar commemorates master blender Abe Flores who was born in ’75.  It has a very unique smell and a pitch black, oily wrapper leaf.  Once lit up it has a very rich and tangy overall flavor – raisin, leather, spice notes.  After mellowing and becoming sweeter for a bit, it ends very bold with coffee and pepper flavor.  Overall, this is a delicious cigar!  Bold flavor, but not overpowering.  It does pack a nicotine punch with that Nicaraguan tobacco in there.  This one is pricey, but definitely worth giving a try.

PDR AFR-75 Cigar 3
7:38 PM
StraightUpCigars: This PDR AFR-75 has the most unique smell – wintergreen-like. Nice oily wrapper with minimal veins. Solid draw.
7:44 PM
Terry1: Black and oily wrapper. It does have a rich smell to it. Draw is a little snug. Getting the raisin or maybe prune notes on the cold draw. Ready to light up.
7:45 PM
IamDarren: Super dark wrapper. Very leathery. Packed tight with some resistance on the cold draw. Getting raisin and some fermented tobacco or hay on the cold draw.
7:46 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lighting!
7:46 PM
IamDarren: Im stoked to try this sucker. I think it won some awards in 2015. Was in the top 5 in Cigar.coms catalogue.
7:46 PM
IamDarren: Lighting up!
7:48 PM
StraightUpCigars: Wow, getting a rich and tangy leather flavor to start. Very bold.
7:50 PM
IamDarren: lots of smoke even with the tight draw. Very deep, rich flavor without too much strength. Getting that sweet fermented tobacco note up front. Some spice on the tongue. Earthy and leathery on the finish with a hint of something tangy on the finish.

7:52 PM
Terry1: It took a lot of flame to get mine smoking. Smoke is rich. The raisin, some spice and a creaminess to start with. Lots of flavors rolling around in the background. Good start.
7:54 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is burning a little uneven, but is a small price to pay for how good it tastes. Smoke production is very good.
7:55 PM
Terry1: Some black coffee is coming through. Goes well with the sweetness and leather. Mine is burning crooked too.
7:56 PM
IamDarren: got a seam in the filler or binder that is burning a little fast but overall it is burning well. Lots of oils coming to the surface near the char line. Mine is already mellowing a bit and starting to pick up more of a slightly charred oak flavor with something sweet (maybe raisin) in the background that comes out more toward the finish. Maybe a bit more spice and a hint of pepper now. About 1/2 inch in.
7:57 PM
Terry1: Man this wrapper is oily! I tried to touch up the burn and the wrapper caught fire.
7:59 PM
IamDarren: lol, i didn’t want to say anything but mine tried to do that when i was first toasting it.
7:59 PM
StraightUpCigars: Same here!
8:00 PM
StraightUpCigars: Would be a good fire starter for the rich and famous
8:01 PM
IamDarren: i really think it is affecting the flavor, possibly in a good way. Keeping the mouth feel very rich and wet. Definitely not a dry smoke.
8:04 PM
Terry1: I had to crack a window. The smoke cloud is growing thick and I’m still in the first inch. Spice mellowed fast. Still getting that fruity sweetness.
8:06 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lol. One time I was smoking an Oval in a small bowling alley and the owner came up to say “thank goodness it’s just your cigar, we thought we had a fire in here!”.
8:08 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is mellowing and has a more pronounced sweetness and dark wood flavor.
8:08 PM
Terry1: Lol that’s funny.
8:08 PM
Terry1: My ash is really flakey.
8:10 PM
IamDarren: luckily i was walking over to get my drink when my ash fell. Its flowering a flaking pretty bad. But the burn is good and flavor is great so i suppose its a minor detail
8:10 PM
IamDarren: smoke production has dropped off some on mine. If i let it set for 10 or 15 seconds i have to double draw.
8:15 PM
StraightUpCigars: Hold a lighter to that sucker and it will light right back up My burn is getting uneven again, but that’s really not the end of the world.
8:18 PM
Terry1: My burn is uneven too but it seems to be burning on all sides. Not much complexity but the flavor is very good. Starting to feel the nicotine. I’m around the halfway mark.
8:23 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine ramped up and has gotten real bold – coffee and pepper
8:23 PM
IamDarren: same here, mine seems to keep mellowing. Good, rich flavor with some sweetness but i can’t pick out individual flavors any more.
8:31 PM
StraightUpCigars: Really liking this new boldness mine has taken on. Good flavor right now.
8:34 PM
Terry1: Agree with the flavors. Loving it. Burn self corrected. Getting that coffee note you mentioned. Draw is getting more deliberate but still smokeable.
8:35 PM
StraightUpCigars: I feel the strength now too, it’s got some kick!
8:41 PM
Terry1: Huh my cigar went completely out. Had to relight. Smoking fine now. Might be from the draw tightening up. This does have a kick to it.
8:41 PM
IamDarren: Mine is just starting to pick up strength. Liking the change of pace. Probably over 1.5 inches left on mine.
8:43 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’ve got about an inch left here, hard to set this one down
8:43 PM
IamDarren: yeah, its not super complex but very tasty. Rich but not overpowering.
8:46 PM
StraightUpCigars: Good description, I agree.
8:52 PM
StraightUpCigars: Just set mine down – it died an honorable death on this cold night!
8:52 PM
Terry1: I’m setting mine down. It’s getting hot to hold. Same great flavors. Enjoyed this one. Didn’t get overly strong but it does let you know there is some nicotine present.
8:53 PM
IamDarren: almost done here
8:57 PM
StraightUpCigars: Overall, Darren said it best – bold but not overpowering. Delicious flavor, but not terribly complex. Hard to find cigars that deliver a unique experience these days.
8:57 PM
Terry1: Thought about the price, they are pricey, but the flavors made up for it. Knocked a point off for the tighter draw. Overall a great tasting cigar. I think most would enjoy it.
