This week’s group cigar review is of the Padilla Cava. This cigar has a veiny wrapper leaf, once you remove all those bands. It also has a nice draw after cutting. Once lit up, the flavor was extremely peppery with a bitter coffee. Extremely in-your-face flavors. There was a hint of sweetness at the start, but that faded somewhat quickly and the rest of the cigar tasted the same. Overall, we really enjoyed the first half of the smoke, but the second half dragged on and didn’t offer anything new in the flavor department. It’s pretty affordable, we think this it’s worth a try.

StraightUpCigars: This one has a veiny wrapper with cedar smell to it. Draw is good after cutting. Banding is outrageous, covers most of the cigar – but I kind of like it.
Terry1: Agree band covers up a lot of the cigar. Nice draw with a chocolate note. Band has a nice bling to it. Ready to light up.
Terry1: First couple of puffs gives a pepper blast. Some kind of sweetness in the mix. Liking the start.
StraightUpCigars: Creamy and peppery to start. Lots of smoke.
Terry1: Did you notice what the secondary white band says? It’s better to be a lion for a day than a sheep all your life. Cigar wisdom!
StraightUpCigars: I love that! The other side says stuff about life in the free air, guardian and lover of the village, etc.
Terry1: Great. Glad you know some Spanish. I had no idea what it said. Boy getting lots of pepper right now.
StraightUpCigars: Just enough to get the gist. Yeah, the pepper has exloded on mine too.
StraightUpCigars: They offer this in a 7×70… lol! What cutter can even cut that?
Terry1: That would be a big one. Not sure I could smoke something for 2 plus hours.
StraightUpCigars: I can smoke for a couple hours, but I’d much rather have 2 different cigars than one monster. The last night of vacation my father and I smoked 3 in a row. Not sure if it was the whiskey or cigars, but the drive the next day was awful
Terry1: That probably sounded like a good idea at the time. I’ve smoke two in a row several times but not three. My palate just gets too burned out.
Terry1: Burn is behaving nicely and plenty of smoke. That sweetness reminds me of vanilla and I’m getting a coffee note on the finish.
StraightUpCigars: It was the best idea I’ve ever had (at the time)! I agree, 2’s the limit.
StraightUpCigars: My burn is good too, still plenty of smoke also. I am getting something coffee like also, more like a charred coffee flavor with bitterness though. I like it. Still plenty of pepper and it lingers.
StraightUpCigars: That charred coffee flavor seems to be increasing as well.
Terry1: I’m noticing that too. Hopefully it doesn’t overwhelm the other flavors. So far I’m still liking it.
Terry1: Band popped off cleanly. Feeling a little strength now.
StraightUpCigars: I am too. The sweetness is gone, but I’m ok with it unless it gets more bitter.
Terry1: I’ve already decided this not a cigar I’d want to try as a 7 by 70!
Terry1: Wow in the last few minutes this cigar has gone full strength for me. I’m really feeling it now. Even as a robusto I’m not sure I can finish it. I’ll plug along as long as I can. I will say the flavors are still enjoyable.
StraightUpCigars: No kidding, this one heats up and gets a little bitter at the 3″ mark, I wouldn’t want to smoke 4″ where it got increasingly bitter!
StraightUpCigars: I never would have guessed based on the smell and look that this one would be so full bodied and full flavored. Seemed like it would bee mild/medium
Terry1: That’s why I bought it. I was thinking it would be in the medium range.
StraightUpCigars: Wow, whole bunch of pepper in the last puff, made my nose burn!
StraightUpCigars: This one is a real ass kicker, definitely a good amount of nicotine in there.
Terry1: Mine is getting more bitter. I’d like to see more of that sweetness we were getting. The last third is becoming a bit of a disappointment.
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, it’s really borderline for me. Any more bitter and it’d be gross, but it’s still enjoyable. If only that sweetness had hung in there longer.
Terry1: My cigar is getting hot too hold. I’ve been letting it rest longer hoping it cools off but it doesn’t seem to be helping much.
StraightUpCigars: Putting the finishing touches on mine. I’m ready to rate when you are.
Terry1: I’m ready. Any more and I wont be able to stand up.
StraightUpCigars: Hard one to rate. The flavor was very good for the first half, just decent for the second. Price is good when on sale. I think it’s a good cigar, but there’s better out there.
Terry1: If this were a larger size I’d probably rate it lower. I agree first half was great. There are cigars more suited to my liking at this price.
StraightUpCigars: I’m glad we tried it though, definitely a different offering from Padilla, not what I expected. Thanks!
Terry1: Glad we could review it though. I did enjoy most of it. The strength really got to me in the end.
