Padilla 1932 Black – Cigar Review

Padilla Black Cigar 2
The Padilla 1932 Black cigar is back up for sale, so we’re doing a review.  This stick has a nice looking wrapper leaf and a sweet / spicy tobacco flavor on the cold draw.  Once we lit it up, we were met with a very rich creamy and earthy flavor with some coffee in there too.  In the middle third it mellowed out a little and had a perfect balance between a sweet creamy flavor, earthiness, and some spice.  The final third unfortunately became quite bitter and less enjoyable.  Overall, we loved the flavor of the first two thirds of the Padilla 1932 Black.  The construction was perfect all the way through.  Even though the final third was a real let down, it scored well and we recommend it!

StraightUpCigars: Nice looking wrapper leaf! Great draw after cutting and a delicious sweet tobacco smell.
7:39 PM
IamDarren: just a bit of resistance on the cold draw. Getting sweet and spicy note on the cold draw. Only one small crack in the wrapper near the foot. I’m ready to light up.
7:39 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lighting
7:41 PM
IamDarren: Whoa, very rich to start off. Sweet and peppery up front with a rich earth and coffee finish. Nice.
7:41 PM
StraightUpCigars: Not nearly the sweetness I expected. You’re right, very rich start with lots of earth.
7:43 PM
IamDarren: mine is picking up a nice creaminess that is helping to bring it all together, nice flavor profile so far. Burn is starting off nicely.
7:44 PM
IamDarren: Did you check out the Amazon prime deals today?
7:44 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, I didn’t find anything remotely interesting to me. I’m a known impulse buyer on camping and fishing, didn’t see anything good.
7:44 PM
StraightUpCigars: You?
7:45 PM
IamDarren: Just got the one thing I needed, a new pair of boots. Found some Colombia leather boots on sale for 40 bucks.
7:45 PM
StraightUpCigars: That’s a heck of a deal.
7:46 PM
IamDarren: I hope so, normally I pay around 100 bucks for a decent pair of leather boots. On the farm I wear them out fast.
7:46 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’m ticked at them, a week ago they sent a $30 off $150 coupon for July 12. I added misc household crap to my cart and went to buy it today… it said coupon expired. People online were saying that they cancelled the deal at noon. I don’t like when people waste my time!
7:47 PM
IamDarren: yeah, that’s BS
7:48 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is really balancing out. Getting a charred wood flavor, some pepper, and a mild sweetness. I like how it’s smoking right now.
7:48 PM
IamDarren: I almost bought a laptop for a client and when i clicked the buy link it popped up and said sold out, then it refreshed and said 7 available but the price was 100 bucks higher.
7:49 PM
StraightUpCigars: They’re being punks. Not going to buy anything for a bit to “punish” them
7:49 PM
IamDarren: lol, I’m sure they will feel the hurt
7:50 PM
StraightUpCigars: For sure!
7:50 PM
IamDarren: we are finally done with harvest. I have a bunch of spraying to get done, then I’m hoping we get some rain so i can go camping.
7:54 PM
IamDarren: just tapped off the first ash. Cigar is burning well. Flavors are mostly the same but seem to be mellowing a bit.
7:56 PM
StraightUpCigars: That does atleast sound like quick and easy money. You might find some business in upgrading old laptops too – extra ram and whatnot.
7:56 PM
IamDarren: Funny story… I was saving a couple of Padilla Habanos from like 4 years ago because i like them so much. I smoked my last one a few weeks ago and the very next day i was looking online and noticed that they are back on sale.
7:57 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lol, good timing! You put the hurt on them by not buying so they had to run a sale
7:57 PM
IamDarren: I kinda wonder if some of the manufactures will bring back some old blends so they won’t be regulated by the new Tobacco laws.
7:59 PM
StraightUpCigars: Good question, I’m not sure how that works. Are all existing blends/brands exempt from the testing crap?
8:00 PM
IamDarren: From what i read they have to be older than 2007 (10 years when the law goes into effect) to be exempt from the new process.
8:01 PM
IamDarren: they will be grandfathered in, so to speak.
8:02 PM
StraightUpCigars: Huh. An unfair burden on the newer brands out there.
8:04 PM
StraightUpCigars: What’s with the “Cuba” and “Cuban Crafted” on the band? Just meant to trick uneducated B&M buyers?
8:05 PM
IamDarren: huh, just noticed that. I have no idea.
8:06 PM
IamDarren: ahh, ok. Just read that Ernesto Padilla is the grandson of a famous Cuban cigar maker. So i guess he can say that….
8:08 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lol, I’m not convinced. The cigar is holding it’s own though, tastes pretty sweet when rested for a minute.
8:08 PM
IamDarren: just crossed the halfway mark. Cigar has mellowed a lot but its still tasty. Creamy up front with a zing from some sort of sweet spice. Then faded to an earthy note on the finish.
8:25 PM
IamDarren: I was starting to get a little bitterness going into the last third but i slowed down and now its gone. Still good flavors.
8:26 PM
StraightUpCigars: I feel like this middle portion of the cigar was just about perfect. Delicious medium bodied smoke with good flavor, perfect burn, good smoke production. Mine has heated up too, though and is getting a bit bitter.
8:29 PM
IamDarren: agreed, nice flavors, good smoke production. Mine has been mostly medium-full until the halfway mark then it mellowed some more.
8:33 PM
StraightUpCigars: I have to really rest it between puffs or it heats up on me. It’s getting a bit needy
8:33 PM
IamDarren: yeah, last third is trying to turn bitter if i don’t smoke slow
8:34 PM
IamDarren: about a half inch left to smoke on mine. Still very enjoyable if i smoke slow.
8:35 PM
IamDarren: getting a small nic kick but not near what i expected from this cigar.
8:35 PM
StraightUpCigars: Good point. This one is not strong at all.
8:36 PM
IamDarren: these days i prefer it that way though. Those super full bodied cigars that have become so popular are not as desirable to me as they once were.
8:37 PM
StraightUpCigars: That’s surprising to hear. I definitely enjoy a mild one from time to time.
8:38 PM
IamDarren: if i have free time and can relax and make up a mixed drink i will smoke one, but lately i have to squeeze cigars in when i am working and i want a mellower cigar.
8:39 PM
StraightUpCigars: Gotcha. I’ve mainly been smoking robusto and smaller lately, having a hard time devoting more than an hour in an evening. If I’m grilling I’ll pull out a hog’s leg though.
8:40 PM
StraightUpCigars: Speaking of that, we smoked two things that were a huge hit on the 4th – shrimp and some thick cut bacon.
8:41 PM
IamDarren: yeah, we smoked a pork shoulder. Nothing better than a nice hunk of meat to munch on while i watch the kids shoot off fireworks
8:42 PM
IamDarren: Just starting to burn my fingers. I can rate any time. This one was good from start to finish. Really enjoyed it.
8:45 PM
StraightUpCigars: Overall, I really enjoyed this one. The bitterness in the final third left a little to be desired, but the first 2 thirds made up for it. Great construction and price!
8:45 PM
IamDarren: One of the best cigars i have had from Padilla. Next to the Habano… or at least my memory of the habano.
