New World by AJ Fernandez – Cigar Review

This week’s group cigar review is of the New World by AJ Fernandez.  The band claims “satisfaction guaranteed”, so well see if we’re satisfied or not.  It has a sweet and rich aroma to the nice looking wrapper leaf and a perfect draw after using a cutter.  Once lit up we tasted chewy/thick smoke with a sweet creamy flavor and some pepper.  During the final third this cigar heats up too much and is difficult to smoke, even after letting it rest between puffs.  Overall, the first two thirds were so darn good that we can overlook the useless final third.  It was very enjoyable to smoke and we definitely recommend giving this a try, it’s worth the price.

Terry1: Noticed how firmly packed the New World box press is. Nice sweet smell to the wrapper. Good draw with a sort of walnut/pecan note.
7:34 PM
StraightUpCigars: Wow, getting a fruity smell from the wrapper, which looks perfect by the way. Good draw after cutting.
7:34 PM
Terry1: I wonder if the “Satisfaction Guaranteed” is just a gimmick or something the company will act upon.
7:35 PM
StraightUpCigars: That’s a good question. Hopefully we don’t have to find out.
7:36 PM
IamDarren: we shall see. Mine has a great rich, sweet aroma. Cold draw is good and adds some earth and a spice note to the mix.
7:36 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lighting up!
7:37 PM
Terry1: I’m ready to be “Satisfied”!
7:37 PM
IamDarren: Lets do this thing!
7:39 PM
IamDarren: Yummy! Sweet and creamy with a bit of earth, leather, and spice in the mix.
7:41 PM
StraightUpCigars: Nice mix of sweet earthy flavor and spice on mine so far.
7:41 PM
Terry1: Nice start. Pepper, sweetness and earth like you said. Makes you melt into your chair.
7:43 PM
IamDarren: slightly less creamy now with the introduction of pepper. Already picking up some strength.
7:43 PM
StraightUpCigars: Agreed, I think this thing will be a beast.
7:44 PM
IamDarren: burn is razor sharp and its holding its box press near the burn line so they put in some effort on the construction.
7:45 PM
IamDarren: lots of smoke
7:45 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, loving the box press and construction.
7:46 PM
Terry1: Mine has one corner burning faster but overall not an issue yet. Pepper and sweetness fading some.
7:48 PM
IamDarren: smoke has that thick chewy character that I get some from a few other great maduros… like a nice juicy steak.
7:50 PM
StraightUpCigars: Definitely buttery and chewy smoke. Full bodied and lingering flavor.
7:50 PM
IamDarren: yep, nice long finish. Great mix of flavor. Pepper has not gotten too strong so I would call it medium/full body. Just right.
7:52 PM
Terry1: Plenty of smoke from the New World. Mine is getting creamier too. Pepper comes and goes. I’d like more of that sweetness from the first few puffs.
7:58 PM
IamDarren: mmmmmmmm….. got my jack and pepsi and a great cigar. Im just sitting back enjoying life at the moment.
7:58 PM
StraightUpCigars: Really enjoyable cigar. Has me leaneed back in the chair.
7:59 PM
StraightUpCigars: Good timing.
7:59 PM
Terry1: Burn line caught up and is near even. A lot of hidden strength in this cigar. It’s got a smooth rich creamy tobacco flavor with a touch of sweetness and pepper. My head is telling me to watch out!
8:00 PM
IamDarren: too late, my taste buds are telling me… MORE of that please
8:01 PM
Terry1: Yeah it’s a battle. The Jack and Pepsi sounds great. I think I’ll try one but with Coke. Don’t have Pepsi handy.
8:03 PM
IamDarren: exact flavors are getting hard to pin down. Its somewhere in between sweet/spicy and earth/leather with a lot of complexity. Just hitting the spot.
8:04 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, very carefully balanced mix of subtle flavors that come through as a bomb going off in your mouth.
8:04 PM
Terry1: Peeled the band off without incident. Nothing on the back. I was hoping for a website for the guarantee information.
8:05 PM
IamDarren: decided to remove the band as I am at the halfway mark. Came off easily. There is something written under then band that was partially removed with the glue. 100%….
8:06 PM
Terry1: Mine did the same thing. All I can make out is the 100%.
8:07 PM
Terry1: Looks like quality is the last word. Middle is too messed up to make out.
8:08 PM
IamDarren: Minimum that can’t be right
8:08 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is written backwards… does have quality in there.
8:09 PM
StraightUpCigars: I think it’s actually written in the glue itself, they used a stamp or something.
8:09 PM
IamDarren: OH, I can read the back side. 100% Premium Quality
8:09 PM
Terry1: That’s what it looks like to me. Mystery solved.
8:10 PM
StraightUpCigars: Oh yeah, I get it now.
8:10 PM
StraightUpCigars: I did lose this ash a little prematurely… right in the lap.
8:10 PM
IamDarren: yeah, mine started with a strong ash but is getting worse
8:11 PM
IamDarren: only complaint so far
8:12 PM
IamDarren: pepper is almost completely gone. Starting to get a hint of acidity. Just enough to lighten up the richness a little.
8:13 PM
Terry1: Really enjoying the flavors right now. Complex. Some sweetness has returned. Hard to nail down exactly what I’m tasting but it’s great.
8:14 PM
StraightUpCigars: I am getting a fruity acidity similar to what I smelled before we lit up.
8:18 PM
IamDarren: sure I can go with that
8:22 PM
Terry1: Wow, enjoying the flavors but the strength just hit me. My head is spinning. I’m real curious about the new Connecticut New World. Maybe the same great flavors with a little less strength?
8:22 PM
StraightUpCigars: This is sure easy to smoke. Full bodied and full strength, but goes down smooth.
8:25 PM
IamDarren: this is a cigar that I would like to know how many different types of tobacco go into the mix and how much fermenting and aging has been used.
8:26 PM
StraightUpCigars: They could be stamping that kind of info on the cello, would be fun to read.
8:26 PM
IamDarren: into the last third and im getting a little heat, maybe a bit more spice and earthiness with less sweetness
8:28 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, I noticed mine was burning real hot. I’ve been letting it rest, but the cherry is still bright orange on the next puff.
8:29 PM
Terry1: I’m getting more of that earthy note and mine is getting hot too.
8:32 PM
StraightUpCigars: Price isn’t too bad on these, most vitolas are backordered though.
8:36 PM
StraightUpCigars: Did you ever end up doing that computer business, Darren?
8:38 PM
IamDarren: still in the startup phase. Got the LLC and am going to start taking orders next month. Deciding if I want to do a website or just post an ad in the classifieds.
8:39 PM
StraightUpCigars: Nice. That will be fun. Hopefully it’s rolling come wintertime when you’re doing less farming.
8:40 PM
IamDarren: yeah its kind of a double edged sword because I hope to get a lot of orders but if I get too many I will have trouble keeping up since it takes a lot of time to assemble them
8:41 PM
IamDarren: that’s why im just starting local
8:42 PM
IamDarren: im leaning tword a website because there is some info and a questionnaire to fill out to get started and it would be much simpler for someone to go to a website and submit the info directly to me.
8:42 PM
Terry1: That makes sense to me. It’s how I would like to order a computer.
8:43 PM
StraightUpCigars: I think local is definitely the right choice. The website would be very useful, and give you credibility, but is probably something you could just do later on.
8:44 PM
Terry1: My only complaint with this cigar is how hot it gets in the final third. I can hardly hold it after a few puffs.
8:44 PM
StraightUpCigars: I agree. The final is my least favorite… but damn those first two were fantastic.
8:45 PM
IamDarren: well the laptop decided it was time to restart and install some updates so I moved inside. Cigar was almost finished anyway. Was starting to burn my fingers.
8:47 PM
Terry1: I’m there too. I’m burning my fingers now.
8:48 PM
StraightUpCigars: Here comes the ratings.
8:49 PM
StraightUpCigars: I took a point off for lackluster final third, flaky ash, and price. All nit picks, really. I loved this full body/strength cigar. Thanks Terry!
8:50 PM
IamDarren: i wanted to give it a perfect score but that final third just heated up a little too much. Overall it was great
8:52 PM
Terry1: Great cigar. I can see why it gets all the accolades. Glad we finally got to try it!
