This week’s group cigar review is of the Montecristo Monte, a fairly new release. Prior to lighting we noted that it has a very well box-pressed shape and a perfect draw after cutting. It has a faint sweet or chocolate smell to the wrapper, which is also very nice looking by the way. Once lit up, it tasted earthy and woody with a sweet molasses-like flavor and a spicy pepper finish. Really nice mix of flavors. Later in the cigar there was a cinnamon flavor and the cigar increased to fuller bodied. Surprisingly, a couple of the sticks had minor construction issues. We chalked this up to the box-pressed shape which tends to cause burn problems. Overall, this was a complex and delicious cigar. We think it is well worth the price and is one we’d try again.

Terry1: Pretty sharp box press on this Montecristo Monte torpedo. Perfect draw, not too loose or tight. I’m getting a musty chocolate on the cold draw. Ready to light this one up.
IamDarren: Well normally Im not a big fan of box pressed cigars but this one looks to have pretty good construction. My only complaint is that the Monte band was put on so tight that it wrinkled the wrapper leaf a little.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Yeah, great draw and nice looking wrapper. The cigar only has a very faint sweet tobacco smell, doesn’t have the strong smell I am used to. I’m ready too!
IamDarren: decent draw, maybe a little tight. not getting much on the cold draw. Im ready to light up.
IamDarren: hmm very interesting. Getting Earth, spice, and plenty of sweet molasses. Not bad at all to start.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I’m all lit up. Very mellow start with a cedar flavor and slight sweetness with spice. Tasty cigar.
Terry1: First few puffs are nice. Easy draw with plenty of smoke. There’s sweetness right away with a woody note and a light spice.
IamDarren: also a slight pepper on the finish and in the sinus
IamDarren: actually the pepper and spice seem to be getting stronger
Terry1: I’m noticing that as well.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I agree with that. The smoke is very buttery and coats the palate.
IamDarren: just looked it up Habano wrapper with its fair share of corojo filler.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Lots of smoke and nice even burn as well./
IamDarren: my burn isn’t perfect but pretty darn good for a box pressed cigar… can’t complain.
IamDarren: spice is building and now putting off more of a cinnamon flavor mixed with the pepper.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I think box pressed torpedos have the best “mouth feel” of any vitola.
IamDarren: i agree with that, the only exception would be the chisel or wedge.
Terry1: The sweetness on mine seems to be fading some and a black coffee note is making an appearance on the finish. One corner on mine is lagging. Looks like a correction will be needed.
IamDarren: i have started to notice that if i take slow/long draws i get more sweetness up front with the cinnamon. Then I start to get a darker coffee like flavor with the pepper on the finish. Im really liking it so far.
IamDarren: ash is tight and holding at an inch.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Yeah this one is definitely not mellow like my first few puffs, it is medium/full right now with a rich coffee flavor and lots of spice. Good cigar.
IamDarren: mine is burning quite a bit faster on one side and will need a touch up as well.
Terry1: Just ashed and I see a void near the side that’s running. It’s now over a half inch further along than the rest of the cigar. I’m going to let it go for now and see what happens.
IamDarren: did you guys get the email for the march madness sampler from cigar.com? Pretty pricey but some nice premium sticks in it.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I didn’t, but saw your post about the sale.
Terry1: I didn’t get it either. It’s been a while since I’ve ordered from them I probably got dropped off the mailing list.
IamDarren: they have had some pretty good daily deals but this one was for a 16 or 18 count sampler with many premiums including Opus X.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: How much was it?
IamDarren: hold on i will check
IamDarren: 18 sticks for 125 with free shipping. Its called “The Beards Best Sticks”. I guess thats what they call the boss man over at Cigar.com
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Huh, missed it. Sounds like a good deal for Opux X quality sticks!
Terry1: I got an email for the cigar festival this weekend. They are moving it to a much nicer hotel in Broomfield, Omni Resort. It’s surrounded by a golf course. Looks like a perfect setting to enjoy cigars!
IamDarren: sweet. Im really hoping to go. I will have to check it out. When can you buy tickets?
Terry1: The tickets go on sale May 1st. I just booked the hotel yesterday.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Still in the same town?
Terry1: I booked the same hotel I stayed in last year. It’s a Marriot in Louisville. It looks like it’s about 5 or 6 miles from the festival in Broomfield.
Terry1: The big news is my wife wants to go. She wants to know what the hell is so great about a cigar festival that I’d want to go three years in a row.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: That’s cool! Will she have one?
IamDarren: lol, so are you both getting VIP tickets
Terry1: Yeah. It’ll be expensive but double the cigars for me. She may try one. I’ll have to remember to bring something that’s infused for her.
IamDarren: Im about at the halfway mark and the creaminess is starting to come in again. Pepper has faded a little as well.
IamDarren: bands came off easily
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Yeah, mine has a super rich dark coffee flavor (slightly sweet, slightly bitter). Reminds me of eating chocolate covered coffee beans.
Terry1: The draw started to tighten up. Clipped off another eighth and it made a huge difference. Smoking great now. The cigar actually evened out on the burn. Still getting some nice flavors. Good cigar.
Terry1: I agree with smoking a little slower. The sweetness has come back and mixes well with that coffee note.
IamDarren: you should get her a VIP and you should go all out and get the Executive VIP! Only 25 people get those.
Terry1: I don’t have the budget for the executive! It’s around $500 a ticket. But I’ll think about it. Depends on the cigars they include in the package.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I don’t think ditching the wife at a cigar festie is a good idea! (unless of course the free cigars makes is worth it
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I should say “free” cigars
IamDarren: she will be with you, you just get to enter an hour early and get all kinds of free stuff and 10 more “super premium” cigars.
Terry1: You’re right. Both groups get to be in the VIP area.
IamDarren: I guess it says 10 extremely rare cigars.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I bet those are some seriously badass cigars. Hard to justify them at an additional $50 apiece… I bet the booze is better too though
IamDarren: Also includes a high end custom festival bag with top of the line cutter & lighter, festival glass, t-shirt, open bar in private VIP lounge, meal & more. Access to private VIP area included.
Terry1: Last year the Executive VIPs got 16 cigars.
Terry1: Last years cigars are still listed on the festival site.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: T-Shirt? It should come with a Brooks Brothers suit!
IamDarren: i guess most of that stuff is the same for both VIP except with the Executive you get unlimited drinks.
Terry1: Everyone gets the same t-shirt. Last years was very nice. The graphics were designed by Drew Estate.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Did the t-shirt have a crotch rocket rider with an uzi? Sorry I had to. Over the course of a few days drinks could pay itself off pretty easy.
IamDarren: Maybe they will include some small batch Liga Privadas. Those sell for a bunch.
IamDarren: starting to get a lot more chocolate flavor going into the last third. Very nice flavor and complexity.
Terry1: Last year I ended up with 50 cigars with the VIP ticket. It was well worth it. They had better liquor in the VIP area. Tried a couple of shots of $200 a bottle rum.
Terry1: The flavors in this last third remind me of how the Monte started. Very nice.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Yeah, great complexity and flavor on this one. My construction has been perfect too, atleast one was.
IamDarren: damn… now im just going to have to beg the wife. Surely the fact that we are having a baby in June won’t matter, right…
Terry1: You’ll need a break just to get some sleep.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Uh… what??? I didn’t know that! Congrats!
Terry1: Both bands came off without any problems. Burn is a little uneven but much better than the halfway point.
Terry1: Hey Darren. Are you the one that likes Knob Creek?
IamDarren: lol, just like how we knew when you were getting Married
StraightUpCigars – Matt: We only talk about the important stuff… cigars and booze
IamDarren: hell yeah
Terry1: Have you tried any of the flavors? I’ve had the regular version. Now I’m seeing several different varieties. Maple and a couple higher proof ones. Every try any of them?
IamDarren: dang. looks like this stick retails between 8 and 9 bucks. I guess i shouldn’t be surprised, it is a Montecristo.
Terry1: There’s a rye version too.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Yeah it ain’t a cheap stick!
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I got my groomsmen Knob Creek Rye with labels that had the date on them.
IamDarren: NICE, my brother in law got me some Knob Creek with my sons name and birth date on it. I am going to wait and drink it with him when he turns 21.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I think you gave me the idea of the custom label thing now that I think about it
IamDarren: i am almost out of my Knob Rye. Liked it quite a bit. Im still hooked on the jack Daniels Honey though. Chill that in the freezer and you can drink it like water.
Terry1: The reason I’m asking is I’m going to see ZZ Top in Wendover Nevada on friday and the liquor store has all these different Knob Creeks available. It’s a little pricey and I wanted a recommendation.
Terry1: Maybe the Rye then.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: ZZ top puts on a good show, we saw them 5 or 6 years ago in KC.
IamDarren: I had the Maple Crown Royal and didn’t like it at all. If it had just a hint of Maple it might be really good but you could almost taste the syrup in it. Maybe if you at it on a pancake it would be tasty, lol.
Terry1: Yeah the maple to me doesn’t sound too appealing.
IamDarren: I ordered some Moonshine awhile back but still have not got it. They had a new kind that was actually distilled from peaches. I will have to let you guys know if its any good.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I bought a bottle of Captain to have around and had a drink last night. I think I’m going to try a few fancy rums coming up, I forgot rum can be real tasty.
Terry1: I bought a bottle of Pendleton 1910. Delicious! It’s just about gone.
IamDarren: If you guys see a bottle of Woodford Reserve definitely try it. Its one of the best Bourbons I have ever had. Great on the rocks.
Terry1: We have a local distillery called High West. From what I’ve read they put out a really good whiskey. I might try something from them soon.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: That and Templeton are on my next liquor run. I hear Woodford is great.
Terry1: I’ve seen the Templeton Rye. The reviews for that is a love it or hate it kind of thing. I’m a little hesitant to buy it at $50 a bottle.
IamDarren: getting down to the end of my cigar. Starting to get a charred oak flavor now. Still a little sweetness and some spice. This one was good all the way to the nub with some nice flavor changes.
Terry1: I’m starting to feel a littl nicotine kick as I near the end.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: My Monte is on its last leg. Love the full bodied smoke right now. This has been a real good one. I’m shocked that construction was one of the complaints on this one, usually they have that nailed. I guess the box press messed with their perfection.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I have tried Templeton, it’s got some serious bite, but it makes you want to beat your chest like a gorilla (that’s a good thing in my book
IamDarren: yea i don’t care what anyone says, I think its almost impossible to get a box pressed cigar to burn perfectly. It creates hard and soft spots in the filler that just won’t burn correctly.
IamDarren: Knob has a little more bite to it than the Woodford, but Woodford has a lot more spice and complexity.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I’m going to rate er.
Terry1: The box press and the void I had hurt this one a few points. Otherwise it was a great cigar.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Good score for a $9 big brand cigar. Loved the flavor and complexity. They nailed it on this one.
IamDarren: yep, best Monte I have had thus far
