L’Atelier El Suelo – Cigar Review

This week’s group cigar review is of the L’Atelier El Suelo, an affordable option by Pete Johnson.  This one appears to be well constructed, but the draw is a little looser than we would prefer.  Once lit up, it starts off fairly mild with a tangy sweetness and roasted nuts flavor.  As the cigar progresses we get hints of peppermint.  Later on, it develops into a full bodied coffee flavored smoke.  We all experienced construction issues at one point or another that detracted from the experience.  Overall, we liked the flavors but the construction was a bit of a buzzkill.  Since it’s priced very low, it still scored fairly well.  Worth a shot.

7:32 PM
StraightUpCigars: This cigar has a strong peppermint smell to it. Nice draw after cutting.
7:35 PM
Terry1: Looks well constructed. I get that barnyard note on the wrapper. The draw is a bit loose for me.
7:39 PM
IamDarren: getting a pepper and spice combo on the cold draw with a hint of earth. Construction looks good, some medium sized veins. Draw is good.
7:39 PM
StraightUpCigars: My draw leans a little to the loose side also. Hopefully the burn stays cool on this big stick.
7:39 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lighting it up!
7:39 PM
Terry1: Lighting up!
7:40 PM
IamDarren: wheres the flamer
7:40 PM
IamDarren: ok, got it
7:42 PM
IamDarren: Wow, getting a sweet and tangy note right up front. Didn’t expect that!
7:42 PM
StraightUpCigars: Nice nutty and toasty start with a little coffee and spice.
7:43 PM
Terry1: Not much resistance in the draw but the cigar produces a bunch of smoke. Lots going on in the first few puffs. More flavorful than I expected too.
7:43 PM
IamDarren: hmmmm, don’t know what happened but after about 10 puffs that sweetness is fading quickly and being replace by spice and roasted nuts.
7:45 PM
Terry1: Don’t tell me that. I’m liking that sweetness, unique.
7:47 PM
StraightUpCigars: No sweetness on mine, that spice in increasing with each puff.
7:48 PM
IamDarren: mine has started canoeing on one side but I don’t mind much because the sweetness is making a bit of a comeback, and is now mixing with the spice and roasted nuts to provide a nice balance of flavor.
7:49 PM
IamDarren: Thinking maybe almost all the sweetness is coming from the wrapper
7:51 PM
Terry1: Sweetness has faded on mine but not totally gone. I’m finding each puff changes a bit. Sometimes sweeter, sometimes spicier, sometimes coffee and earth.
7:52 PM
StraightUpCigars: I agree Terry, I get something a little different with each puff.
7:52 PM
IamDarren: tapped off the first ash and its got a void down the side that is canoeing. Im going to have to correct the burn
7:56 PM
IamDarren: got a bunch of that tangy sweetness again when I did the burn correction
7:57 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine has a rich coffee flavor, haven’t gotten that sweetness but would like to.
7:58 PM
Terry1: My burn is just wavy. Tapped the ash and I can see a couple of small voids. Could be underfilled. But it’s $3 so I can’t complain too much.
8:00 PM
IamDarren: the void continues with my stick. One side is burning at least twice as fast as the other. Here comes burn correction #2
8:00 PM
IamDarren: flavors aren’t bad when I get the sweetness. Otherwise its very dry with just earth and spice.
8:01 PM
Terry1: Sweetness on mine comes and goes. Now it’s gone but I get that rich coffee note you mentioned.
8:01 PM
Terry1: I agree Darren. This cigar is much better when the sweetness comes through.
8:03 PM
StraightUpCigars: My wrapper is cracking near the burn line. Hopefully that will fix itself. Otherwise decent construction/
8:05 PM
Terry1: It may be the power of suggestion but I just got that minty note you got from wrapper.
8:05 PM
StraightUpCigars: Nice. It was STRONG smelling on my wrapper, surprised it wasn’t there on the other sticks.
8:05 PM
IamDarren: maybe that’s what im picking up… something mixed with the sweetness that comes and goes
8:06 PM
IamDarren: just crossing the halfway mark if you take the average of the canoe on both sides
8:10 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lol! I’m at about the same spot.
8:10 PM
StraightUpCigars: The draw is fine, it tightened itself up a bit.
8:12 PM
IamDarren: yeah I think im just going to live with a 45 degree burn line. Burn corrections haven’t helped much. Flavor has mellowed a little, and as long as I can keep the cigar warm it seems to keep the flavors mixing well. When I let it sit for very long and take a draw I loose the sweetness.
8:13 PM
Terry1: My draw is better too. Burn is a little wavy. Popped the band off without any issues. Flavors are a mix of sweetness, mild spice and earth. I’m liking it so far.
8:14 PM
StraightUpCigars: My burn is growing increasingly lopsided, I’ll correct it soon. So far I like the flavors (especially the first third) and they overshadow the construction problems.
8:21 PM
IamDarren: into the last third now, starting to pick up on that coffee flavor now. Construction has been poor but since the halfway point the flavor has been pretty good
8:21 PM
StraightUpCigars: I can feel the buzz on this one… lots of tobacco in this giant.
8:23 PM
Terry1: Mine has a solid ash. I’ve only ashed twice at the end of each third when it was over an inch long.
8:23 PM
Terry1: I’m getting a little buzzed too.
8:24 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’m finally starting to taste that peppermint I smelled. Nice change of pace.
8:29 PM
Terry1: Yeah I’m getting a lot of mint now too.
8:31 PM
IamDarren: agreed, im really liking the flavor combo now. Im starting to think the burn issues I was having was really affecting the flavor of the first half. If the whole thing was like what im smoking now i would think about getting more
8:37 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine has taken on more of a char flavor here in the final third, I think the sheer size of it caused some tar buildup. As long as it doesn’t get any stronger I’
8:37 PM
StraightUpCigars: m still enjoying it.
8:38 PM
Terry1: I liked the first and last third. The middle went a little bland or flat. I’m tasting so much mint right now I feel like I’m chewing gum and not smoking a cigar. If the whole cigar tasted like this I’d say it might be infused with something.
8:40 PM
Terry1: I’m just about done. Interesting cigar. Not at all what I expected. Ended a strong medium on strength.
8:41 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is nearing the end too. Ratings coming up in a sec
8:41 PM
Terry1: I would buy more but I am concerned with some of the construction issues we had.
8:47 PM
StraightUpCigars: Overall, this a great value stick that everyone should try. Ran the gammit from mild to full bodied at the end. Fun smoke.
8:47 PM
Terry1: I agree. I enjoyed it and would recommend it.
8:48 PM
IamDarren: with bundled sticks you might get more construction issues but if you can get them cheap its worth it
8:49 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, this would be a nice BBQ smoke. Love finding good deals, that’s what it’s all about. Nice find Terry!
