Up for review is the La Duena cigar by Pete Johnson. It has a rustic looking wrapper leaf but good draw after cutting. After lighting it up we taste a mix of coffee and dry earthy flavor with a slightly bitter finish. The second third has a delicious sweet creamy flavor, but that fades in the final third and that earthy flavor dominates. Overall, we really liked the second third, but the rest of the cigar left a lot to be desired. One of the sticks was not drawing well and had construction issues. For the price, there are better options out there.

StraightUpCigars: Mine has a faint mint smell to the wrapper. Wrapper is a bit rough around the edges, but has a perfect draw after cutting.
IamDarren: Mine seems well constructed. Nice rustic leathery wrapper. Draw is a bit tight and reveals a hint of cocoa and spice.
Terry1: You’re right, the wrapper looks rough but the draw is good. Getting a musty barnyard note. Not liking the band much.
Terry1: Let’s light em up!
IamDarren: let er rip tater chip!
IamDarren: lit easily but not getting much smoke on the draw. Some earth, toast, and spice notes are dominant. Slight coffee finish.
IamDarren: very dry mouth feel. Hoping it opens and introduces some sweetness or creaminess.
StraightUpCigars: Very dry. I’m getting a lot of pepper and spice to start.
Terry1: I’m getting some smoke just not as much as I would like. Nice spice up front with some earth and coffee. Maybe a floral note hiding in the background. It is drying.
IamDarren: yeah, not enough smoke to really coat the palate. Left with a dry acidic taste in my mouth on the finish. Mine seems to be just rolled a little to tight. Draw is tight.
IamDarren: and its weird because the cigar is burning quite fast
StraightUpCigars: Mine is running down one side. I’m going to correct.
IamDarren: tapped ash off. Almost to the second third. Finally starting to get more smoke. Just starting to get a hint of sweetness in there.
Terry1: My draw is okay, a touch on the tight side, but still smoking. The pepper seems to be backing off and earth is now the dominant note. There’s a hint a sweetness way in the background. Burn looks good so far.
StraightUpCigars: Starting to get the earth and coffee mentioned as the pepper backs down a bit. Getting better.
IamDarren: mine has almost picked up a slight bourbon flavor. Oak up front with a slight bitter char which transitions to a hint of molasses. Starting to finally like the flavor
IamDarren: more spice zing and a hint of pepper in the sinus
StraightUpCigars: The band with the teenage boy on it has a lot of glue, so I had to tear it off.
StraightUpCigars: I’m hoping these will continue to improve, they have good ratings.
IamDarren: I was able to slide mine off the foot…. without loosing the ash
Terry1: That’s talent!
StraightUpCigars: That’s impressive.
IamDarren: I’m at the halfway mark. Really starting to mellow out. Starting to get more creamy and the char is almost gone.
StraightUpCigars: After that 1 correction it’s burning straight now.
Terry1: Mine is developing a little much appreciated sweetness. Helps with the earth and coffee notes that have dominated so far. Pepper is way in the background now. I’m liking the flavors now more than the first third.
Terry1: Surprised my band came off cleanly.
IamDarren: last couple puffs I got a blast of sweetness. I can’t place it. Sort of floral but I am left with caramel on the finish. Gotta give it props for complexity. Getting some big flavor transitions.
StraightUpCigars: I really like the flavor profile at this point. Getting sweet cedar and earth with a hint of coffee and spice.
Terry1: The Nascar race was interesting but I think I prefer watching it on tv. My God it was LOUD! I found out it got to 120 dbs. Luckily we had ear plugs. Vegas was fun too. Saw Blue Man Group. That was hilarious.
IamDarren: wish I would have just went to the shed. Started out near 70. Now its getting windy and dropped into the 50s.
IamDarren: I went to Blue Man when I went to Chicago during a high school trip. they are fun. Makes me want to buy a bunch of pipe and make some instruments.
StraightUpCigars: That sounds awesome. Overall did you enjoy Vegas? I’ll be there for work in June.
IamDarren: Took my son to see the Monster trucks a few weeks ago. Glad I did some research and bought some ear plugs for it also.
Terry1: Yeah I had a good time in Vegas. It’s got a lot of diversity so you can keep entertained without the gambling. It is expensive. The days of free and cheap are over. Some of the casinos charge for parking now.
IamDarren: I would love to see Vegas also. I hear that some of it is very fancy but you don’t want to go down the wrong street because it gets trashy pretty quick.
Terry1: True, big homeless problem there. You go down the wrong street and it gets sketchy fast.
IamDarren: My sister went and couldn’t believe the amount of prostitutes walking the streets.
StraightUpCigars: Interesting, sounds epic.
Terry1: Went to Fremont street and saw several girls topless with pasties on. Don’t see that everyday.
StraightUpCigars: Nice! *mental note, go to Fremont St
Terry1: The real problem with the prostitutes is knowing who is male and who is female. Could get the wrong surprise back at the room.
IamDarren: I also hear that if things continue they will be forced to start rationing water. They use thousands of gallons of water per day that is all from the hoover dam. Farmers are raising hell because they aren’t getting enough water.
Terry1: Sweetness in the cigar comes and goes. I like it better with the sweetness. Smoke is still drying my palate out. Still earth and coffee heavy with some woody notes. Burn and draw is still good. Starting to feel some nicotine as I start the final third.
IamDarren: Im in the last third. Sweetness is starting to fade. Bitter coffee note is replacing it.
StraightUpCigars: Mine is getting richer and fuller bodied as it get closer to the end. Lots of bitter coffee flavor. I didn’t love the start, but the second two thirds have been pretty good.
Terry1: If you’re looking for an OpusX, go to the Fuente shop in Caesars Palace. They had a very good selection just be ready to pay a lot for them.
Terry1: If you have the time and want a nice cigar lounge to go to just off the strip, we went to a place called the Cigar Box. Great selection of cigars, good prices, nice lounge area, friendly people and they serve drinks. Highly recommended.
StraightUpCigars: Cigar box sounds like it’s more my style, although In usually bring a bunch with me. Will check it out if I get the time!
IamDarren: Sweet. I think i would spend most of my time there. Im not a fan of huge crowds of people…. and loosing money
IamDarren: Might so see some shows and then chill with a cigar
IamDarren: Not much left on my stick. Sweetness is almost gone. Seems to have reverted back to the dry earthy flavor from the first half with the addition of bitter coffee on the finish.
IamDarren: Looking forward to summer when i can concentrate on the cigar instead of the weather. Its been crazy here. Some 80 to 90 degree days and some cold windy days. Hard to plan for anything.
StraightUpCigars: Mine is winding up too. Interesting smoke, going to be hard to rate.
Terry1: I’m just about done too. Smoke is getting hot. Got a slight nicotine buzz on this one. Sweetness is still there but it’s quickly heading into the background. I’m getting more of that bitter coffee and earth you mentioned.
IamDarren: Mine suffered from a tight draw and not enough smoke production in the first half. Really improved in the middle third but then slowly declined in the last third.
StraightUpCigars: Overall, this one had promise with a very complex and delicious second third, but the rest lacked. Given the MSRP (they can be had much cheaper) and Garcia name, it should be better.
Terry1: Didn’t like how it started but enjoyed the second half. A little heavy of the earth which I don’t care for but got better as the sweetness showed up. Construction was good on my sample. If you like an earthy cigar I’d recommend trying one.
IamDarren: I appreciate that it wasn’t a pepper bomb like a lot of Pepin sticks. Just need some more sweetness or creaminess to tame the dry earth flavor for much of the smoke.
