La Aurora 107 Maduro – Cigar Review

This week’s group cigar review is of the La Aurora 107 Maduro.  This one has a mix of tobacco from Nicaragua, Ecuador, AND, Dominican Republic.  It has a slightly sweet fermented tobacco smell to it.  The wrapper leaf looks real nice and it has a a perfect draw after cutting.  Once lit up, the 107 has a rich earthy flavor with some sweetness and a spicy finish.  This cigar produces a ton of full bodied smoke and the burn is very even in the first half – good construction.  Later in the cigar it picks up a strong pepper flavor, enough to bring tears to your eyes if you retrohale it.  Overall, we liked this cigar a lot.  The flavor was mostly the same throughout the smoke, but it was a good blend of sweet and spice.  It had just a couple of minor construction issues in the final third, pretty solid.  This is one of our favorites from La Aurora.

7:50 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Wow, this cigar has a very sweet tobacco smell to it. The wrapper is nice looking and it has a perfect draw after cutting it.
7:53 PM
IamDarren: Wrapper looks nice and leathery, got a nice fermented smell to it.
7:54 PM
IamDarren: used the shuriken to cut it and the draw is perfect. Got a nice mild spice on the cold draw
7:55 PM
IamDarren: i guess im ready to light when you are
7:55 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: lighting up.
7:58 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I didn’t expect this much flavor. Rich and meaty earth flavor with lots of uniwue spice on the finish.
7:58 PM
IamDarren: getting lots of smoke. Caramel sweetness and Spice is dominating. Got some earthy undertones. Very good.
7:59 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: You are right, this one produces SO much smoke. The resting smoke is just billowing off.
8:00 PM
IamDarren: getting a nice hearty character to it. Nice and chewey. Reminds me of a Diesel…
8:01 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I agree, a Diesel with more smoke production. I’m impressed so far.
8:05 PM
IamDarren: hows your humi been handling the weather
8:06 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: My 2 upstairs wood humis are not good, but my storage and review humis (coolerdors) are perfect. What about your cabinet/
8:07 PM
IamDarren: mine was jumping all over the place so I decided it was time to replace my humi beads. Instead of soaking them i put a couple jars of water in there and ever since then it stays at 65 all the time. I put a few drops of rubbing alcohol in the water to keep it fresh but so far its working great.
8:08 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Interesting. Someday I’ll bee getting a cabinet, probably not too far off.
8:09 PM
IamDarren: I ended up putting a few ice cube trays at different levels with the humi beads and a couple of mason jars filled about half way with water.
8:10 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Ice cube trays is a good idea. Do you use one of the big humidifiers?
8:11 PM
IamDarren: just three ice cube trays and the water. So far its working. I think the trick is to make sure the whole cabinet is sealed properly. If I wouldn’t have gone to all the trouble to seal the door up I probably would have had to get a humidifier.
8:12 PM
IamDarren: the price was right but its made just like a china cabinet.
8:12 PM
IamDarren: cigar is burning perfectly and although the ash is a little flaky its still holding. Flavor is great. Still sweet with just the right amount of spice. Then the rich maduro flavor comes in on the finish.
8:14 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Mine has become sweet, it didn’t start that way. Love the flavor right now, this cigar makes being in the cold no big deal.
8:14 PM
IamDarren: still gobs of smoke which is a plus
8:14 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: My ash was one big flake, so I knocked it before it fell on the computer. That’s my only negative so far.
8:15 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: So much smoke on this thing, it got in my eye and burned
8:17 PM
IamDarren: lol, before i got contacts it would sometimes go in behind my glasses if i retrohaled, that wasn’t too fun.
8:18 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I didn’t know you gad contacts. I need some clear ones to block cigar smoke
8:19 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: So I’ve been eating nothing but mexican on the trip, and also at home before. I had a jalepeno burger tonight and it reminded me America rules
8:19 PM
IamDarren: i was always dropping and breaking my glasses on the farm. I didn’t get contacts before because they bothered my eyes but they came out with the Dailies that you throw away each night.
8:21 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I have a lot of pepper and some leather flavor making their way into this one. Still so much smoke and no serious construction issues.
8:28 PM
IamDarren: i don’t know if i told you but i pulled the cummins engine out of my truck. Im getting it overhauled.
8:29 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: What year is it?
8:30 PM
IamDarren: 1997
8:31 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Nice. About that time. My friend has an old Dodge, early 90’s. Converted it to biodiesel. My CR-V is on the fritz, I’d overhaul the engine but I have rust issue throughout – lots of salt on the city roads in MO.
8:33 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I’m looking at possibly getting a small Toyota truck.I SUVs aren’t SUVs anymore, they all ride so low. I need something to get around on my parent’s property.
8:35 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: BTW, I’ve owned only Hondas my whole life, so that’s a big step for me
8:37 PM
IamDarren: Toyota’s are good trucks, sorry my internet decided to quit for a min.
8:37 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I saw that.
8:40 PM
IamDarren: My cigar is just passing the halfway point and its trying to go out on me… wtf
8:40 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I must be puffing faster b/c I just entered the final third and mine is burning like a beast.
8:41 PM
IamDarren: can’t let this one sit for any amount of time i guess
8:49 PM
IamDarren: im into the last third. Getting a little bitterness now and some char. Still a decent amount of sweetness though. Also a little pepper creeping in.
8:57 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: My cigar is very full bodied right now, the pepper flavor is giving me the hiccups. I love it, and am becoming more of a fan of La Aurora.
8:58 PM
IamDarren: whats the retail on this one?
8:59 PM
IamDarren: Im still in love with those Asylums. And i got some more of those Core Daggers. Love those too, especially with a little aging.
8:59 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Retail is about $8 per robusto, but if you’re savvy (use the internet) you can get them for around $3 or $4 each.
8:59 PM
IamDarren: Perdomo just released a new Exhibicion line that looks interesting
9:01 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Very interested in the Exhibicion, I read about that the other day. Perdomo has some of the finest value smokes on the market IMO. I’ve never had a bad one!
9:01 PM
IamDarren: also picked up a new Super Premium to send ya. And yes… its made by AJ
9:02 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: OOOOH! I don’t know what it is. I don’t like spoilers, don’t tell me!
9:03 PM
IamDarren: ok
9:03 PM
IamDarren: i think my cigar is about finished. The burn is getting lopsided and i had to relight.
9:09 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I guess my last post didn’t take. Here’s my review:
9:10 PM
IamDarren: Flavor wasn’t super complex but definitely a good mix. Only had issues in the last third.
9:11 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Agree. I think the 107 is one of my favorie La Auroras. It delivers a lot of flavor, but lacks in flavor transitions. Good value cigar.
9:12 PM
IamDarren: funny that we brought up Perdomo because i see a lot of similarities. Would make a good Go-To smoke.
