La Aroma de Cuba – Cigar Review

This week’s group cigar review is of the La Aroma de Cuba.  It has a mottled and leathery looking wrapper leaf and a perfect draw after cutting.  Once lit up the cigar has a fantastic mix of earthy, peppery, and sweet coffee flavors with a lingering spice on the finish.  Those core flavors remained the same throughout the smoke with one or the other becoming the main flavor for brief periods.  The sweetness and the strong pepper balanced each other out, making this an enjoyable smoke.  Overall, we had some minor construction gripes, but this one is well worth the price and we recommend it!

7:31 PM
IamDarren: Like the wrapper, medium brown with a leathery texture. Getting a mix of cedar, spice, and something sweet from the wrapper and foot.
7:31 PM
IamDarren: going to get er clipped and head to the porch
7:35 PM
StraightUpCigars: Nice spicy tobacco smelling wrapper leaf and a perfect draw after cutting.
7:40 PM
IamDarren: draw is a little on the easy side, glad i used the punch.
7:40 PM
Terry1: Cigar looks well made. The wrapper is very mottled which is okay with me. Draw for me is about right. Just getting a generic tobacco note.
7:40 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, I did a shallow cut and it seemed to be about perfect.
7:40 PM
IamDarren: looks like we are ready to light up
7:41 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yep, lighting.
7:42 PM
IamDarren: greeted with that signiture Pepin spice and pepper, mixing with some kind of sweetness. Lots of flavor to start.
7:43 PM
IamDarren: I heard that this one was recently reblended by Jose Pepin.
7:43 PM
Terry1: Yep a blast of pepper here. I’m getting that sweetness too and some earth and coffee. Good start.
7:44 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine has started very earthy with pepper and spice. Pretty bold start.
7:46 PM
Terry1: Looks like I’ve got a void next to the wrapper. It’s running up one side. I’m going to leave it for now and see if it self corrects.
7:47 PM
IamDarren: im also getting that rich, sweet earthy note. Burn is sharp and no construction issues here.
7:47 PM
StraightUpCigars: My burn is pretty uneven, but I think there’s a chance it will correct itself.
7:49 PM
Terry1: Wow, I’ve got to be careful with the pepper. Retrohaling right now is just too much.
7:50 PM
IamDarren: Its starting out strong but i like it!
7:51 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine has a sweet coffee flavor taking shape. It’s really mixing well with the pepper.
7:52 PM
IamDarren: i was starting to think mine might have a little acidity but with the sweetness its coming across like black coffee or coffee bean.
7:55 PM
Terry1: I’m really liking that sweetness. Looks like I’m going to need a small correction to the burn. Ash flowered around that void.
7:57 PM
IamDarren: glad you were able to burn through it and keep going. My ash is holding strong and hasn’t flowered yet.
7:58 PM
StraightUpCigars: Burn correction needed on mine. Hopefully that takes care of it.
7:58 PM
StraightUpCigars: I lost some with the burn correction, but I feel like this is a real fast burner. I’m at the halfway point already. Is it just me?
7:59 PM
IamDarren: The retail on this one is around 5 bucks. There are a couple followups since its release. The Edicion Especial was given the #4 cigar of the year.
7:59 PM
IamDarren: Im just going into the second third
7:59 PM
Terry1: You’re ahead of me. Starting second third.
8:00 PM
StraightUpCigars: I had to burn almost an inch of one side to get it back to even, that probably made the difference.
8:03 PM
Terry1: I feel like this cigar is teasing me. I get a really nice sweetness when I first exhale then a zing of pepper hits and makes me sneeze.
8:04 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lol! I like the two very different flavors playing on each other.
8:04 PM
IamDarren: lol, i have never smoked a Pepin cigar that spice and pepper didn’t dominate
8:05 PM
IamDarren: However, i just looked up another new addition called Mi Amor that uses a dark San Andres wrapper. Reviews say it has more of a sweet mocha flavor.
8:06 PM
IamDarren: im nearing the halfway mark. The spice is still strong but the pepper has faded and allowed more of that rich earthiness to come forward. Still a little sweetness in the mix.
8:06 PM
Terry1: Just took off the band. The side the void is on was about to burn into it. Too much glue, it took off a piece of the wrapper.
8:07 PM
IamDarren: sorry you got the bad stick tonight Terry. My band came off super easy.
8:08 PM
StraightUpCigars: Same here. Thanks for taking one for the team Terry
8:09 PM
IamDarren: BTW, i snagged that box of Latitude Zero’s. Let me know how many you guys want.
8:09 PM
Terry1: It’s not that bad. Lots of little things. Cigar is smoking well and I’m liking the flavors. Pepper seems to be subsiding.
8:10 PM
Terry1: I’ll take five. I’ll send the money next shipment. Should be the middle of February if weather permits.
8:10 PM
IamDarren: Don’t worry about money, just send me a few extra sticks
8:11 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’d like to try another one.
8:11 PM
Terry1: Thanks I’ll throw in some extras then.
8:13 PM
IamDarren: The box on those is built like a humi. I swear its like 3/8 thick and it has two cedar trays that have slats between each cigar.
8:13 PM
StraightUpCigars: The earthiness is back on mine with a strong dark coffee. The sweetness and pepper have really subsided.
8:14 PM
StraightUpCigars: That’s box sounds sweet. Most of the time I wish they’d skip the fancy box, but there’s some exceptions.
8:14 PM
IamDarren: agreed, pepper is almost gone on mine. Coffee flavor is mixing very nicely with the earthiness.
8:15 PM
Terry1: I agree. Getting coffee and some sweetness. Tasting very good right now.
8:15 PM
IamDarren: Makes sense that you can usually get a lot better deal on fivers. It had to have cost them 10 to 20 bucks to make that thing.
8:16 PM
Terry1: Burn has finally caught up. It’s burning even now and the ash is solid. Hopefully that’s the last of the construction issues.
8:17 PM
IamDarren: i just tapped off the second ash. Solid construction on my end.
8:18 PM
StraightUpCigars: I had that major burn correction, but it’s been fine otherwise. Ash does hold on pretty strong.
8:21 PM
Terry1: Entering the final third. Starting to feel a touch of strength now. Coffee and earth are dominating with a touch of sweetness. I’m liking it.
8:22 PM
IamDarren: yeah i think the flavor has been improving on my stick since the first puff, starting to feel it a little in my gut now
8:23 PM
IamDarren: there have been two guys doing most of the work in my basement the last couple weeks so they noticed when i would grab a cigar and head out. So yesterday i gave them both a La Estrella Cubana. Thought it would be a good flavorful beginner cigar.
8:25 PM
Terry1: Good choice. Always good to tip the help.
8:28 PM
StraightUpCigars: Nice, good move greasing the guys doing work for you!
8:28 PM
IamDarren: Got everything in place to start building and selling computers. Started an llc with the name Power UP PC. Guess we will see how it goes once i start advertising. Going to keep it local to start.
8:29 PM
StraightUpCigars: Congrats! That will be a fun venture.
8:30 PM
IamDarren: Was going to start sooner but the renovation has pushed things back. I will finally have a decent office to do all my work once its done.
8:31 PM
IamDarren: I have a little over an inch left and I am really starting to feel it now. Got a puddle of spit on the porch
8:31 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lol! Yeah, this one has some strength. I actually just finished mine up, which sounds about right with you have an inch left.
8:32 PM
IamDarren: Earth is dominating with black coffee and spice on the finish
8:33 PM
IamDarren: This one paired really well with my Crown and pepsi
8:33 PM
Terry1: Yeah I’m beginning to get the spins. Glad it’s about done.
8:33 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yep, I had whiskey coke and it was perfect.
8:33 PM
IamDarren: I can rate whenever you are ready
8:33 PM
StraightUpCigars: Spins are kicking in over here too
8:34 PM
Terry1: I’ve been enjoying 10 Cane rum I picked up today. It went well with the sweetness of the cigar.
8:35 PM
IamDarren: i bet some rum would help with the sweetness
8:35 PM
StraightUpCigars: Nice looking bottle!
8:36 PM
IamDarren: i was watching moonshiners the other day and they were making Apple Rye… bet that would taste interesting.
8:36 PM
StraightUpCigars: I like that idea.
8:36 PM
Terry1: That’s an unusual combination.
8:37 PM
Terry1: I’m done. I can rate anytime.
8:39 PM
StraightUpCigars: Great cigar. A little light on complexity if I have to find something to complain about. Loved the balance b/n sweet and pepper. Fun smoke!
8:39 PM
IamDarren: yeah, it packs a punch but has great flavor to back it up
8:39 PM
Terry1: It’s interesting what a difference size makes. I smoked the El Jefe size and didn’t like it. This blend is much better in the robusto size.
