Kinky Friedman Utopia – Cigar Review

Kinky Friedman Utopia Toro review
This week we smoked the Kinky Friedman Utopia for our group review.  This cigar’s smoking experience is just as flamboyant as the band.  It was all over the map, starting mild and ending full bodied.  It began with buttery and creamy flavor with some mint, then ended with flavors including citrus, wood, and coffee with bitterness.  Our final thoughts were all over the map.  They ranged from “eh” to “I loved it”.  The bitterness is real hit or miss – you either like it or hate it.  The construction was decent for such a large cigar, just some minor issues.  You will have to read our chat below to form your own opinion, but the one thing we all agreed on is that it is worth a try.

8:09 PM
IamDarren: this is a hefty cigar!

8:10 PM
IamDarren: getting some nice sweet woody notes off the wrapper

8:12 PM
Terry1: Not much on the cold draw, just a musty tobacco taste with a touch of sweetness. Draw is good, a little on the snug side.

8:12 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, sweet woody and a hint of mint in there too. Smells good.

8:13 PM
StraightUpCigars: My draw is actually a little airy after cutting, i’d rather have it that way than snug.

8:13 PM
IamDarren: draw is good on mine, but not getting much flavor on the cold draw.

8:14 PM
StraightUpCigars: Wrapper is real nice, one medium vein running the length. I am liking what I see/smell. Ready to light!

8:14 PM
Terry1: Looking at the band, Kinky sure loves Texas. Nice western theme.

8:14 PM
IamDarren: maybe a few too many colors for my taste but i like the theme

8:15 PM
IamDarren: I am ready to start toasting

8:16 PM
IamDarren: plenty of smoke to start but a very mild body.

8:16 PM
IamDarren: very buttery/creamy texture

8:17 PM
StraightUpCigars: Creamy and cedary, but with a bold finish that is a bit bitter. Very unique, I don’t know how to describe that flavor yet. Interesting.

8:18 PM
IamDarren: ok, i’m starting to get that also. Very woody to start and then fades to a slightly charred oak.

8:18 PM
IamDarren: wheres the rum?

8:19 PM
Terry1: I’m struggling with a description. Creamy, toasty, cedar and I get that touch of bitterness on the finish.

8:19 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, charred oak is a good description. You know, the finish reminds me of perique tobacco, aged in empty whiskey casks.

8:20 PM
IamDarren: perique tobacco? where can i get some?

8:20 PM
StraightUpCigars: At most smoke shops sold in small black pouches made by American Spirit.

8:20 PM
IamDarren: there is something else there too. You can really pick it up if you retrohale slowly.

8:21 PM
IamDarren: its light and sweet. Almost like some sort of fruit.

8:21 PM
StraightUpCigars: I think there is mint, and this time I did not brush my teeth.

8:22 PM
IamDarren: that has to be what i am getting. Its almost masked by the wood notes but it mixes in well.

8:23 PM
StraightUpCigars: What an interesting blend, I hope it keeps up. Way to go Terry!

8:23 PM
Terry1: I’m getting a slight sweetness and the bitterness I got earlier is more like a citrus bitterness, like orange peel.

8:24 PM
IamDarren: i think we are all getting the same thing its just hard to nail down. citrus or mint

8:24 PM
StraightUpCigars: Agreed. I am not decided either.

8:25 PM
IamDarren: mine is still very mellow though. Not picking up in strength at all.

8:26 PM
StraightUpCigars: I would put mine in the medium category, mostly because of the finish.

8:28 PM
StraightUpCigars: My burn line is not good, other than not burning evenly I am pleased.

8:28 PM
Terry1: Burn on mine is doing well. Cigar is providing lots of smoke even with the snug draw.

8:33 PM
StraightUpCigars: Man, I still have the first ash. Holding on strong!

8:34 PM
IamDarren: mine was startig to get a large crack in it so i tapped it off at about an inch.
ov 29 2011, 8:34 PM
StraightUpCigars: and there it goes…

8:34 PM
IamDarren: no flavor changes at all for me. Might be getting a little warmer but not stronger.

8:36 PM
Terry1: Ending the first third, nothing new to report. Woody with some kind of citrus. No strength. Burn is starting to stray.

8:37 PM
StraightUpCigars: I did 1 burn correction. Same flavors, increased bitterness. I like the flavor profile.

8:43 PM
Terry1: I’m picking up that mint you got earlier. nice

8:45 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’m glad you guys tasted the mint too, it is very refreshing.

8:55 PM
IamDarren: I’m at the halfway point and the bitterness is picking up some. Getting a bit of pepper now on the retrohale also.

8:56 PM
Terry1: I’m starting the last third. So far this seems to be one of those cigars that neither thrills or offends, just an easy going smoke.

8:57 PM
StraightUpCigars: Good call, I have some pepper on the finish too.

8:59 PM
IamDarren: so Terry whats the info on this stick. Blend? Price Point?

9:01 PM
Terry1: It’s from Honduras. Habano wrapper, Costa Rican binder, Honduran and Nicaraguan fillers. About $5-$6 a stick. I paid about $4.50 on a sale.

9:02 PM
StraightUpCigars: Dam?! 4.50, I expected much higher. I like this stick, good change of pace.

9:02 PM
IamDarren: Lots of different tobacco in there. Maybe if they had rolled them a little different the flavors would have transitioned more.

9:03 PM
IamDarren: Mine is warming up quite a bit more and the pepper is getting stronger. I would call it medium/full at this point.

9:03 PM
Terry1: Yeah I’m liking it too. It does have a unique taste.

9:06 PM
Terry1: I’m picking up a touch of pepper and a little bit more sweetness in the aroma. Goes well with the woody citrus flavors.

9:08 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, I am getting buttery smoke with woody, citrus, and coffee flavor – heady finish with pepper and a lot of bitterness.

9:09 PM
StraightUpCigars: Medium/full, good construction – 1 burn correction. Great cigar overall with some flavor combos I have never experienced before. Will score well at $4.50 a stick.

9:10 PM
IamDarren: yeah i think its a winner. I have seen some deals on the Kinkys but now i will pay more attention.

9:12 PM
IamDarren: I still have an inch to go. Are you guys almost finished?

9:13 PM
Terry1: I’m about done. The last third really seems to have ramped up on the flavors. I’m liking how it’s finishing.

9:13 PM
StraightUpCigars: I have an inch or so to go. Hopefully my computer lasts that long.

9:14 PM
IamDarren: mine is getting really hot. When I draw it almost burns my tounge. Getting drier with some cinnamon coming to the front.

9:15 PM
StraightUpCigars: From twitter: TheRealKinkster Kinky Friedman
All of us Texans should be thankful today, and remember those less fortunate. Of course, I’m talking about residents of the other 49 states

9:15 PM
IamDarren: also getting a lot less smoke than before

9:15 PM
Terry1: Mine has stayed cool and there’s very little bitterness. I wonder if the heat is causing the bitterness to be more pronounced on your cigar.

9:15 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine has kind of plugged itself too throughout the smoke.’

9:16 PM
IamDarren: im wondering if its getting some tar. These longer cigars tend to have that issue sometimes.

9:17 PM
IamDarren: huh, gave it a rest and now its back to normal. Even producing more smoke. Thats kinda weird.

9:22 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is almost finished here. I am going to rate it.

9:23 PM
Terry1: I’m putting mine down. Can’t hold onto it anymore. My cigar had a snug draw but I never felt like it got plugged and I didn’t have to work hard to get smoke maybe the reason mine stayed cool and flavorful.

9:24 PM
IamDarren: once mine cooled down it returned to the nice creamy smoke that it had been.

9:25 PM
Terry1: I can recommend at least trying the Kinky Freidman. It might not be your regular flavor profile but it does offer a unique smoking experience.

9:26 PM
StraightUpCigars: I loved it. Unique combo of flavors, bitterness was a bit much some times. 1 burn correction. Price is good, not perfect. Really scores well in my mind.

9:29 PM
IamDarren: I just wish there had been a few more flavor transitions. This is one I would enjoy more in a smaller vitola.

9:31 PM
StraightUpCigars: Wow, wide range of ratings. I thought the journey from mild to full bodied was fun and the final flavor profile was no where near the beginning’s.
