Up for review is the Joya de Nicaragua Cuatro Cinco cigar. This cigar is touted as commemorating the 45 years of JDN. It has a very oily wrapper leaf and a mild woody smell to the wrapper. Once lit up, this one didn’t taste mild like it smelled – it starts out with a bold pepper and spice dominating. It did mellow out and we got a sweet flavor with some coffee, the spice still dominated though. Overall, we liked this cigar, but wish it was a little less one-dimensional. There were still some other subtle flavors in there that we enjoyed and helped keep our interest. Like all JDN cigars, this one packs a serious nicotine punch. If you’re up for a spice bomb, definitely give this one a try!

StraightUpCigars: This Cuatro Cinco has a nice looking wrapper leaf and good draw after cutting. Mild tobacco smell.
IamDarren: Nice medium brown wrapper. I have one small wrapper flaw but the torp cap and box press are well done.
IamDarren: just a mild woodiness aroma on the wrapper. Cutting now.
Terry1: The wrapper on mine looks wet with oils. Nice easy draw. Getting a dusty pecan shell type of note. Ready to light this up.
IamDarren: Nice medium/easy draw. Getting mostly wood on the cold draw, maybe a hint of spice on the tongue. Ready to light er up!
StraightUpCigars: If I’m curt or simple tonight, it’s b/c I’m trying to keep my gloves on It’s 5* before wind chill!
IamDarren: wow, thats stronger than i expected!
Terry1: That’s brutal. Spring is coming.
IamDarren: Getting a rich woody / earthy flavor up front that is immediately wiped out by cinnamon.
StraightUpCigars: This tastes nothing like it smells – very rich, dark, and flavorful. I’m getting earth, coffee, and a strong spice.
Terry1: Getting lots of creamy smoke. It’s got a pepper punch to it in the sinus. Mild sweetness and a woody note follow.
IamDarren: Gotta say the spice and pepper are really overpowering at this point. I don’t mind a strong cigar as long as the flavors are there.
StraightUpCigars: yeah, it’s fairly one dimensional. i am liking it right now, though.
Terry1: It’s too much for my liking at the moment. I can’t even casually breath in the smoke without the sinus sting. I’m hoping the pepper eases up in the first inch or so.
Terry1: Getting a some floral notes now.
IamDarren: just let mine rest for a min. and tapped off the ash. Cherry was still bright red. Im thinking mine is burning a little hot and ramping up the pepper.
StraightUpCigars: Weird double band thing – popped right off.
IamDarren: going into the second third now. Still have a strong cinnamon that is overpowering. Thankfully there is just enough sweetness to keep it from drying out my mouth. Seems to be mellowing just slightly.
Terry1: Do we have the same size cigars? I have a toro and I’m a long way from the band. Pepper is strong on mine but it seems to mellowing. Like the mild sweetness.
StraightUpCigars: I have a robusto
IamDarren: I have a box pressed torpedo
IamDarren: im just at the halfway mark
StraightUpCigars: That makes more sense, forgot I did that.
IamDarren: been really trying to let it rest and the last draw was WAY better. A lot more creamy and a slightly tangy/sweet note came through.
Terry1: I’m doing the same. Resting the cigar helps a lot with the pepper. Much better flavors.
StraightUpCigars: mine is the perfect mix of rich coffee flavor and bold spice. it’s hitting the spot.
IamDarren: i just got that coffee note on the finish. Letting it cool down has totally transformed the flavor. Guess Matt is in the perfect smoking environment for his cigar tonight.
Terry1: I’m liking the middle third. I’m getting this complex mix of sweet, cedar, tang, mild spice. Hard to describe but it’s good! Burn has been perfect.
Terry1: I’m not getting the coffee note yet
IamDarren: burn hasn’t been perfect on mine but its a box press…. nuff said.
StraightUpCigars: I’m enjoying it. perfect cigar for tonight too.
Terry1: Pulled my bands off. Love the picture on the inside. Smart to use both sides of the band for information and promotion.
Terry1: The box press finally caught up to me. Burn has been getting consistently lop sided. I’ll probably have to correct it soon.
IamDarren: i agree, i like it. Simple, elegant, and innovative.
StraightUpCigars: Mine is pressed too, so far so good on construction
IamDarren: i was about to correct mine and it finally caught up
StraightUpCigars: is the whole family in town for the funeral terry?
Terry1: Yeah. I’ve seen people I’ve haven’t seen in ten years. Amazing how we all age. I don’t notice it myself but I’m sure I’ve changed just as much. Lots of new kids too.
StraightUpCigars: a weird thing how a funeral is the only thing that gets everyone together usually
Terry1: Yeah. The family has a reunion in the summer but with the oldest generation dying off fewer people show up.
IamDarren: getting old sucks
Terry1: Surprised the burn self corrected. Beginning to feel the nicotine. Flavors are still about the same. Enjoying this cigar.
StraightUpCigars: I can definitely feel it – it’s my first one in a while. I really like the flavor right now, it’s come around.
IamDarren: Still have to give mine plenty of rest or it overheats but i like the flavor. Getting a lot more of that coffee on the finish now going into the last third.
Terry1: I’m starting to get a roasted coffee note. Sweetness as faded. Really like the transitions this cigar is taking.
StraightUpCigars: Mine is ramping back up here at the end of this shorter stick. That pepper and spice has rebounded in full force – you never know where this one will take you next.
IamDarren: don’t say that. i was hoping the last couple inches of mine wouldn’t kick me in the ass.
Terry1: I second that.
StraightUpCigars: It’s a JDN, it’s meant to kick your ass
IamDarren: lol, good point
Terry1: I have less than an inch left. The nicotine is winning. Didn’t get a blast of pepper like you mentioned. I’m going to put down the rest before I get sick.
StraightUpCigars: I hear ya. Mine’s out too.
IamDarren: im almost done. Pepper didn’t become a problem but i still wish it didn’t drown out the other flavors for such a large portion of the cigar.
StraightUpCigars: Ready to rate em?
Terry1: Let’s do it.
StraightUpCigars: Overall, this was a spice bomb with some other pleasant flavors mixed in. One-dimensional at times, but the major transitions made up for it. I liked it a lot, but would be a little hesitant to buy a box.
Terry1: I enjoyed this cigar but it’s too strong for me to buy a box. If you can take the strength this is an enjoyable cigar.
IamDarren: Thanks for the stick Matt. If i was in the mood for a strong cigar i think this one would be in the list. I just don’t know if i could smoke it very often.
IamDarren: I detected some other great flavors. If it would have really mellowed out more in the middle and brought out more flavor it would be a different story in my mind.
