JM’s Nicaraguan Maduro – Cigar Review

This week’s group cigar review is of the JM’s Nicaraguan Maduro.  This one has a rough and lumpy feeling construction, but it does come pre-punched (great idea!) and the draw is perfect.  It has a unique fragrant floral smell to it.  Once lit up, we tasted a mix of chocolate and coffee flavor with some pepper.  The pepper faded and sweetness increased as we smoked.  2 of the 3 sticks had a flaky ash, but that was our only construction complaint.  Overall, we really liked the flavor on these and loved the price.  We definitely recommend giving them a try, they’re a good value.

StraightUpCigars: This one has a rough and lumpy construction underneath a dark and rustic wrapper. It has a sweet/minty smell to the wrapper. It comes pre-punched and the draw is perfect so no need for a cutter.
7:42 PM
Terry1: Rustic looking cigar. Don’t like the band but it fits with the rest of JM’s brands. Mine is already punched. I hope that was intentional. Draw is good.
7:42 PM
IamDarren: give me a couple mins to get ready
7:43 PM
Terry1: The wrapper does have a fragrant floral note to it.
7:46 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, that’s what I was smelling.
7:51 PM
StraightUpCigars: Looks like this is the Maduro version, they have two varieties of the Nicaragua.
7:54 PM
IamDarren: lit easily, great draw, plenty of smoke
7:56 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine lit up easily too. I do like the pre-punched aspect since the seem to have gotten the draw right.
7:56 PM
IamDarren: getting a nice spicy/sweet maduro combo flavor, earthy base with a toasty finish
7:57 PM
StraightUpCigars: These samples were sent to us by JM. These are a $3 stick.
7:57 PM
IamDarren: are they a new release? whats the story behind the brand
7:58 PM
StraightUpCigars: Newish. The brand has several offerings all named after the country the tobacco is from.
7:59 PM
Terry1: Nice easy start. Agree with the sweet maduro notes and an earthy finish. Flavors are on the light side but pleasant. Plenty of smoke volume and the burn is even.
8:00 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is starting off with very dark and rich earthy core with a hint of sweetness. Typical maduro flavor. There is a hint of bitterness in there, hopefully it burns off.
8:02 PM
IamDarren: this thing sorta reminds me of the ML3 from Arganese. Kinda strange flashy band and the wrapper is a little on the tough side but flavor is pretty good so far. Mine seems to be getting stronger, may be a little pepper entering into the mix.
8:05 PM
StraightUpCigars: I agree with that. I think the sweetness is slowly ramping up on mine, bringing in more off a coffee flavor.
8:08 PM
Terry1: I’m getting a hint of pepper too. A sweetened coffee with cream is what I’m getting. Good flavors.
8:08 PM
IamDarren: ash looks kinda funky as well but it seems to be burning fine and flavor is decent. Just pulled them up on Famous and you can buy a case of 50 for 100 bucks… guess they are hoping people will buy bulk.
8:10 PM
StraightUpCigars: I only found one review of this cigar and it was very positive. The reviews of the Dominican range from amazing to terrible.
8:10 PM
StraightUpCigars: That’s why I picked this one tonight, beat everyone to the punch with the review!
8:13 PM
StraightUpCigars: Fantastic smoke production, but my ash has flaked off a couple times, watch out!
8:13 PM
Terry1: I’ve had a half dozen of the JMs Dominicans and they were okay. I’m liking this Nicaraguan better thou.
8:16 PM
Terry1: My ash has been solid. I just tapped off at about an inch. Sweetness seems to be getting stronger.
8:16 PM
StraightUpCigars: Agree, mine gets sweeter with every puff. Liking it right now.
8:21 PM
IamDarren: Mine has lost the pepper and has now developed a nice sweet chocolate flavor that really coats the palate.
8:21 PM
IamDarren: into the second third now
8:26 PM
StraightUpCigars: Me too. Nice mix of the rich coffee flavor and bitter-sweet. Pretty good for a cheapie
8:27 PM
IamDarren: I guess you could say the flavor is a bit one dimensional but some of my favorite cigars are that way. Each puff is rich, sweet, and savory. Hard to complain
8:29 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, that’s true. One dimensional, but there’s been some transitions to keep it interesting.
8:29 PM
Terry1: Agreed. Simple flavors but enjoyable. Hard to believe it’s a $2 stick. I’m going to have to pick up a few more to try. Just not 50 of them.
8:29 PM
IamDarren: or find a lot of friends to do a box split
8:31 PM
StraightUpCigars: That’s a LOT off friends. 50 seems a bit excessive.
8:34 PM
IamDarren: band came off super easy
8:36 PM
IamDarren: upgraded the old Toshiba to windows 7 and I think its hanging up because of only 2Gig of Ram. My new Droid phone has more processing power and memory than this laptop… kinda sad.
8:36 PM
Terry1: I’m about to the end of the middle third and the spice is coming back. Got a nose full and sneezed. Ash is flaking a little now. Burn has been near even.
8:37 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lol! You’re the computer guy, buy some ram! I upgraded my new laptop as soon as it came in, ram is so cheap these days.
8:37 PM
IamDarren: this one is old enough that it only supports 2G. It had 1 and I upgraded it already, lol
8:38 PM
Terry1: What amazes me is the 30gb micro cards. How can they store that much on something that small.
8:39 PM
StraightUpCigars: Seriously, those cards are amazing. I can’t even get them into the device, I always end up dropping them!
8:39 PM
Terry1: Lol that sounds like me!
8:39 PM
IamDarren: and my old Micro-sim would not fit into my new phone because it takes a Nano-sim….. seriously people.
8:41 PM
StraightUpCigars: Jeez. These people think I have tiny robot fingers.
8:41 PM
IamDarren: did you guys know that Google bought out Motorola. So my Droid Maxx is really just a Google phone now. I like it because there is no Verizon boatware and it automatically upgrades to the newest operating system
8:44 PM
StraightUpCigars: Huh. Didnt know that. Susie has a Moto G phone and loves it (I take ccredit for finding that one… even though I know nothing about phones )
8:45 PM
IamDarren: I got mine because i wanted a rugged phone and I can’t get the Casio anymore (they quit making phones from what i gather) This one has the Gorilla glass and Kevlar in the back cover so it was the best i could fine.
8:46 PM
IamDarren: into the last third now, flavor is pretty much the same. Pepper will come and go every few puffs.
8:47 PM
Terry1: Band slipped off easily. Into the last third and the spice is gone again. The sweetness and coffee are the dominate notes now. Still enjoying this cigar.
8:47 PM
StraightUpCigars: Spice is really kicking on mine now too, like yours Terry. Don’t even think about retrohaling!
8:51 PM
StraightUpCigars: I need my phone batt to last several days for camping, so I’m not getting a smart phone anytime soon. BUT, iff they came outt with a pocket computer device that didd everything but be a phone and data plans were appropriately priced, I’s get one.
8:54 PM
Terry1: I’ve seen portable charging “bricks”. Not sure how many times it could charge a phone before it dies but it may work for extended periods with no plugs available.
8:56 PM
StraightUpCigars: That’s true, that wouldn’t be a bad solution.
8:57 PM
IamDarren: I bought one of those from Amazon for my brother in law and he likes it. Get the biggest one and it will charge it several times.
9:02 PM
StraightUpCigars: The bitterness ramped up on mine as this one comes to an end.
9:02 PM
IamDarren: mine started in that direction so I gave it a rest. That helped some
9:02 PM
IamDarren: amost finished here
9:03 PM
Terry1: Almost finished here too. No bitterness on mine. Still that sweet coffee note.
9:04 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’ll try resting it before the last puffs.
9:08 PM
StraightUpCigars: That definitely helped. Ratings on the way.
9:14 PM
Terry1: I’ll admit I had low expectations for this cigar but was proven wrong. I enjoyed the simple flavors the JM’s Nicaraguan provided and the construction was top notch. My only criticism is the box size. A fiver or ten pack to have some on hand would fit better in my humidor. For the price it’s easy to recommend trying.
9:15 PM
IamDarren: agreed. I guess if you bought a box they would be great sticks to give out for friends to try as well
9:15 PM
IamDarren: cheap but pretty good
9:15 PM
StraightUpCigars: Agreed. I was a little worried after feeling the rough construction, but loose ash was the only problem and the flavor was enjoyable. The box size iss completely silly.
9:18 PM
IamDarren: I would have to pull it back up but I think you can get a 20 box or a 50 box
9:19 PM
StraightUpCigars: That would make more sense.
