This week’s group cigar review is of the Jericho Hill. It’s made by Jon Huber (of Crowned Heads) and My Father – quite the pairing. This cigar has a pungent, well-fermented tobacco smell to it and a mottled wrapper. It has a perfect draw after cutting. Once lit up, we tasted a rich coffee flavor, sweet creamy flavor, and some spice. It tasted great! We loved the box press shape, it’s very comfy to puff on. Overall, there is nothing about this cigar to pick on, other than it’s high price. We really liked it and think it’s a must try.

StraightUpCigars: All set up with the Jericho Hill. This one has a very pungent barnyard smell to it and a mottled wrapper. The drsw is just about right after cutting.
Terry1: Just read the Jericho Hill description on the Crowned Heads site. Sounds like we are in for wild ride tonight.
IamDarren: It looks and smells great! Rich maduro wrapper and quite a bit of well fermented tobacco flavor on the cold draw.
StraightUpCigars: Oh boy… if the unique smell is any indicator this one will be different.
Terry1: Rich is the key word. Mine has a perfect draw with a sweet tobacco note. Looking forward to this one. Let’s light up.
IamDarren: draw is a bit tight on mine but manageable. Bring on the flame!
IamDarren: Wow, Amazing first draw! Strong but sweet coffee all the way. Tons of creamy smoke.
StraightUpCigars: Rich and creamy smoke right off the bat, very chewy in texture. Delicious..
Terry1: Getting plenty of smoke. Lots of sweetness to begin with. Bold pepper zing in the sinus. Expected that being from My Father. Great start.
StraightUpCigars: I absolutely love the mouth-feel of this box pressed stick and it’s producing so much smoke.
IamDarren: also getting a hint of pepper and a slight acidity on the finish. Otherwise a super tasty coffee flavored candy bar-cigar Might actually be worthy of the Johnny Cash reference.
IamDarren: Glad they went with the San Andres maduro. The richness needs a lot of sweetness to balance it out and so far it is the perfect mix.
IamDarren: draw has opened up a bit and it is really billowing smoke. Great burn and just decided to tap off the ash at 1/2 inch
Terry1: I’m getting the coffee as well. Pepper is backing off a little allowing that sweetness to come through again.
StraightUpCigars: Coffee and roasted nuts flavor for me. Smoke iss chewy/buttery and the flavor really lingers between puffs. Fantastic.
IamDarren: mine is also becoming a bit more buttery. Its bringing down the strength and making me think i just added some creamer to my coffee.
IamDarren: nearing the second third
StraightUpCigars: I was rooting on your Utah team last weekend. I don’t think they have a chance against Dukie, though. Wichita/Kansas was fun, made KU look like chumps!
IamDarren: lol, yeah that was a big rivalry. I didn’t really care either way but Wichita defenitely deserved to win that one.
Terry1: Yeah it’s been big news here. Several of the sports writers are saying Utah has a chance against Duke. I’m skeptical. I just hope they can keep it close.
IamDarren: best of luck
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, hope you guys can pull it out. I love the bracket style playoffs, gives eeveryone a chance (except for MU who didn’t even make it )
StraightUpCigars: Will be interesting to see if KU continues to refuse regular season matchups with Wichita, that back story is interesting.
IamDarren: KU has more talent as a team I think but this year they just never got organized and played as a team. However, if you look at the schedules of both teams KU had a lot harder schedule.
Terry1: Pepper has faded to the background. Loving the flavors now, a creamy coffee with a touch of leather. Ash came off in a solid chunk. Burn is near perfect.
StraightUpCigars: Definitely, they’re a dyansty, but makes you wonder why they’ve been afraid (?) to face Wichita all these years.
IamDarren: lol, i don’t think that is the reason. They are in different Leagues. But Wichita has proven they deserve to be in the Big 12
StraightUpCigars: They’ve been refusing Wichita matchups for 20 years according to the news, I think they’re scared to split recruiting with another in-state powerhousse (K State).
StraightUpCigars: Trying not to give Wichita legitimacy is what I’m getting at.
IamDarren: i suppose that could be true. Not too many other states have 3 large schools that compete
StraightUpCigars: I’m just regurgitating other news stories, I only way B-Ball during March
IamDarren: My cigar is at the halfway mark. Even more buttery now and the coffee has almost completely morphed into espresso at this point, very sweet.
StraightUpCigars: This cigar is perfect so far. The coffee flavor is getting richer and losing some sweetness. Just like you, perfect burn and ash.
StraightUpCigars: I got a press release from General today that they shut down a massive Cohiba/Part/Mac counterfeit factory in Florida. It’s amazing people would go through that much trouble to rip off non-cuban brands.
Terry1: I’d like to know how they can have a strong pepper note at the beginning then have it quickly fade. This cigar has changed into a different smoke since that first inch. Really enjoying the journey so far.
IamDarren: agreed, liking the transition. Very flavorful and complex. Anticipating a strong finish
Terry1: Yeah I’m just waiting for the strength to kick in.
IamDarren: Another nice feature of a box pressed cigar… the band just slid off
StraightUpCigars: Yep, box press done right is the finest smoking experience IMO.
Terry1: My band popped off without incident.
IamDarren: the only problem is that they are hardly ever done right IMO
StraightUpCigars: Lol, yeah, it’s rare.
IamDarren: I would imagine that it would be hard to underfill the cigar just perfectly so when it is box pressed that it has a good burn and draw
IamDarren: Most are usually too tightly packed
StraightUpCigars: I think you’re right, the act of compressing to that shape can cause issues.
IamDarren: I was really hoping we would see some more ovals and chisels hit the market…. still waiting
StraightUpCigars: These are pricey. Thank you Terry!!!
Terry1: You’re welcome! Thus the small size. Got them on sale for $6 each. I was thinking the bigger sizes would get too strong for me and ruin the experience.
IamDarren: dang, you weren’t lying… looks like 8 bucks for the robusto.
StraightUpCigars: Fine choice, this is really setting the bar high. Easy for me to say, but this has been a value at $6 so far, really superb smoke.
IamDarren: im starting to pick up some spice notes, still not getting much strength going into the final third
StraightUpCigars: Good call, tasting some cinnamon and spice here.
Terry1: I agree. This has been a real treat. We needed this after the last cigar we tried, Kuuts.
IamDarren: lol, glad im getting in on the good one
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, that one was all over the place. We neeed you to smoke that one to set the record straight, Darren. My construction was awful with a couple stems, but Terry got a hint of greatness (were it not for his own stem issue).
Terry1: Into the final third and I’m surprised the strength hasn’t ramped up. Still a solid medium. Great flavors.
IamDarren: btw, i shot an email to my guy at Cigar.com and he sent me some of those AJ sticks to try. Got the Uncut, Relic, and Mayimbe.
IamDarren: With the New World from Terry we are going to get our AJ fix this year
Terry1: The Gunslinger is an AJ blend too.
StraightUpCigars: He’s all over the place now, gotta read the fine print b/c he’s behind so many blends.
Terry1: I tried the Mayimbe last year. Good cigar but it kicked my butt towards the end.
IamDarren: as long as they are good he can keep em coming
IamDarren: after this one i may have to put Crowned Heads on my radar!
Terry1: I’ve tried most of their blends. Headley Grange is another favorite of mine.
IamDarren: was just eyeing that 6 Shooter sampler http://www.cigarsinternational.com/samplers/74832/crowned-heads-6-shooter-sampler/#p-132491

Crowned Heads 6 Shooter Sampler – Cigars International
Terry1: That what I bought at the festival. Good sampler to try.
StraightUpCigars: This cigar is unreal. Nice transitions as it progresses. Not too much strength or body. I can’t say enough, this is my favorite I’ve had in a while.
StraightUpCigars: And I’m hard to please, I think.
Terry1: It’s pairing well with the Four Roses bourbon I’m drinking.
StraightUpCigars: What is that??
IamDarren: yeah…. im getting there. I used to seek out every new blend that hit the market but now i have so many favorites that i don’t branch out much.
IamDarren: that new Guiness Blonde is a pretty darn good Lager btw
StraightUpCigars: I’m jealous of the Four Roses website.
Terry1: I’m drinking the small batch release. Great bourbon. Need another bottle thou. Mine is gone tonight.
IamDarren: maybe its just me but that birth date page is getting annoying…. do they think we are stupid. I didn’t mind checking that i was 21 but any fool can enter a birth date that will let them into the site
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, it’s annoying. I tried a Zafra rum that is aged in bourbon casks – drinkability and sweetness of rum with the rich character or whiskey. Recommended
Terry1: I agree with that. Kind of stupid. Must be another brilliant government regulation.
StraightUpCigars: No kidding.
StraightUpCigars: You guys know I’m a beer snob, but I bought a case of Kraftig Light this weekend. Really nice to have a summmer/chuggable beer option that’s American made/owned. The St. Louis tie helps for me too. Cheaper than Coors/Bud. products too, and with some flavor.
Terry1: That rum sounds good. I’ll have to look for it.
IamDarren: both sound good and i will probably not find either of them anywhere near me….. grrrr
Terry1: Same here. I have to buy the better bottles out of state.
StraightUpCigars: You should be able to get Kraftig, it’s gone national. Not sure on Zafra rum.
IamDarren: my shaggy litte Terrier just came up to greet me and had ticks all over him….. welcome to Spring!
Terry1: I don’t want to put this cigar down. Still burning cool even thou I can hardly hold it.
IamDarren: same here, mine hasn’t gotten much stronger, still sweet and creamy with some spice notes and a hint of coffee
StraightUpCigars: The only good thing about tick season, is your wife has to check you for them
StraightUpCigars: And vice/versa
StraightUpCigars: Chiggers on the other hand, nothing good about them.
StraightUpCigars: In these final puffs the Jericho is extremely rich, and interestingly has lost the butteryness and become drier. Truly all over the map in terms of how this has progressed (and backwards in many ways), but all for the better. Really set the stage for a great night, good choice Terry!
Terry1: I agree. Glad it was a good as advertised. I really enjoyed the Jericho Hill. I’m ready to rate it when you are.
IamDarren: sorry, Maddie was crying and the wife was tucking in our son so i had to fill in
IamDarren: i can rate
IamDarren: wish it would have built on the flavor a little more in the last third… but that is a minor complaint
IamDarren: great cigar Terry, nice pick!
StraightUpCigars: Crazy good cigar, and a fun night too. Thanks Terry!
Terry1: It’s a winner! Highly recommended.
