Inferno – Cigar Review

This week’s group cigar review is of the Inferno, a cigar by Oliva.  This cigar is tightly packed but has a decent draw after cutting.  We tasted some cocoa on it before lighting up.   Once lit, we liked the rich earthy flavor with some sweetness and pepper.  The first half was good, the second wasn’t.  A bitter flavor dominated the second half, this flavor really lingered between puffs and none of us liked it.  Overall, it’s hard to recommend a cigar that’s only good for half of the smoke.  The Inferno is cheap, so if you try it you won’t be out too much money.  We recommend passing on this one.

7:31 PM
IamDarren: good looking wrapper on this stick. Getting some cedar and maybe cocoa on the cold draw. Nice easy draw
7:32 PM
StraightUpCigars: The Inferno has a great looking wrapper and very tight pack. Once cut it’s got a perfect draw. It has a very earthy smell to it.
7:32 PM
Terry1: I’m getting some cocoa on the draw. The draw on mine is a bit snug but I don’t anticipate a problem.
7:33 PM
IamDarren: im ready to light up this Inferno!
7:33 PM
StraightUpCigars: Me too, lighting!
7:36 PM
IamDarren: wow this thing is starting great. Up front a bold earthy and char flavor that really coats the palate and then some semi-sweet chocolate on the finish. Yummy
7:37 PM
Terry1: First few puffs offer some sweetness, earth and pepper. Nice start.
7:40 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is a rich earthy flavor with lots of pepper and a hint of sweetness. Nice flavor!
7:40 PM
IamDarren: pepper is just starting to creep in on my stick
7:41 PM
Terry1: The pepper is dominating at the moment on mine. Almost brought me to tears when I retrohaled. This cigar will wake up the senses!
7:43 PM
IamDarren: to me, its more like pepper corn than black pepper. Im not getting that dry, stinging sensation. Its bright and is giving the cigar a slightly acidic character.
7:44 PM
StraightUpCigars: Uh oh, mine has expanded and is cracking the hell out of the wrapper.
7:45 PM
IamDarren: well stop inhaling the thing and take a break
7:45 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lol! I’ve actually been taking it easy on this one.
7:46 PM
IamDarren: darn, mine is performing perfectly. Great burn, just tapped the first ash off and im almost to the second third.
7:47 PM
Terry1: That sucks. Mine so far is burning perfectly. Pepper seems to be backing off some. I can taste earth and a hint of sweetness.
7:48 PM
IamDarren: this one may have a little more strength than the fellas over at Oliva are used to making but Im starting to think that Inferno may have been a bad call on the name. It very flavorful and might scare some people off.
7:48 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’d just like to point out that this is the worst cigar band of all time. It makes the cigar look like a crappy house blend instead of an Oliva hidden gem.
7:49 PM
IamDarren: agreed
7:49 PM
StraightUpCigars: Good point darren, the name implies nothing but heat and pepper.
7:49 PM
Terry1: I wouldn’t call it the worst but I agree it looks like a house brand.
7:52 PM
IamDarren: You name a cigar something like that and you immediately have an expectation. Not a fan.
7:53 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, we should work in cigar marketing
7:53 PM
IamDarren: How about when we finish we can each come up with our own name for this cigar.
7:53 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’m ready to start this game now!
7:53 PM
Terry1: I’m liking the aroma but I’m getting a lingering chemical taste in my mouth that I’m not liking. Maybe some bourbon will hide it.
7:54 PM
IamDarren: there ya go, bring out the whiskey
7:55 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’m going to name it: The Pledge. Named after the chemical aftertaste it gives off. I kid, I kid.
7:55 PM
Terry1: lol that was mean.
7:57 PM
StraightUpCigars: I know. I do think I taste what you are referring to, it comes through as more of a bitterness on mine. I actually kinda like it at the moment.
7:58 PM
IamDarren: same here, its mixed with the pepper. Its like a mix of pepper, spice and lime.
7:59 PM
IamDarren: just crossing the halfway mark and that flavor is starting to take over
8:01 PM
Terry1: Well the bourbon didn’t work as well as I had hoped. I can still taste the bitterness. Not as strong but it’s still there. How’s the split wrapper going?
8:01 PM
IamDarren: how about Cocktail…. or Holy Cocktail
8:03 PM
StraightUpCigars: I like that name. I like Whiskey Dick better though. Maybe I shouldn’t be incharge of marketing???
8:03 PM
IamDarren: I have really slowed down on the draws and its helping. More sweetness and less bitterness.
8:04 PM
Terry1: It’s frustrating. The initial smoke and aroma are pretty good then that finish just spoils it. Maybe it’s called Inferno because you have to keep puffing on it to avoid the finish.
8:11 PM
StraightUpCigars: It does have some strength, but isn’t the butt kicker I thought it would be.
8:11 PM
IamDarren: nevermind, bitterness is taking over as i go into the last third
8:11 PM
Terry1: Band came off cleanly. Burn is still good. Flavors are starting to mellow to that bitterness.
8:13 PM
StraightUpCigars: This may be one of those “smoke the first two thirds, then pitch it” cigars.
8:17 PM
StraightUpCigars: I gotta be honest, this tastes downright foul at this point. The first half was very enjoyable though.
8:18 PM
IamDarren: dang it, rain storm moving in and lightning just made the power flicker.
8:19 PM
Terry1: Yeah this Inferno is starting to smoke like a cheap house blend. I smoked a Serie G and a Serie V last week and this cigar is nowhere near those two. Disapointing that this is an Oliva cigar.
8:20 PM
StraightUpCigars: I agree. This would be a terrific NUB or 4 inch smoke.
8:21 PM
IamDarren: Im sure this is one that Famous went to oliva for a custom blend and then said “Oh by the way, you have X amount of money to make it”
8:21 PM
Terry1: That actually might work. Focus on the first half and end it before the bitterness took over.
8:26 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’m ready to rate mine, setting it to rest.
8:26 PM
Terry1: Getting into the last third and I’m starting to feel it a bit. I purged a couple of times and it seemed to help some. I’m getting a hint of the flavors I got in the first half.
8:27 PM
StraightUpCigars: Did I smoke too fast again? I’ve got a problem…
8:30 PM
IamDarren: sorry, power flickered again. im ready to rate
8:31 PM
IamDarren: got down to the last inch and had to quit. Bitter and not much else at the end
8:33 PM
StraightUpCigars: How’s yours hanging in there Terry?
8:45 PM
IamDarren: that last third just ruined it. I haven’t had too many cigars that started decent and just went bad.
8:45 PM
IamDarren: I liked about half of the cigar so i gave it 10/20 on flavor
8:45 PM
Terry1: Same here. Not one I could recommend even trying. Just too many other cigars out there that are better.
8:46 PM
StraightUpCigars: I really liked the first half, hence my review numbers. At this price, it could be considered “worth it” to only smoke the first half.
8:46 PM
StraightUpCigars: You’re right though Terry, I wouldn’t recommend it, there’s better.
8:47 PM
IamDarren: oh well, I was glad to try it. At least so people can see that it isn’t as good as some reviews say.
8:47 PM
Terry1: We were bound to get a dud at some point. Just surprised it was an Oliva product that ended up being the dud.
