Hoyo La Amistad – Cigar Review

hoyo-la-amistad-cigar-3
The latest from Hoyo, La Amistad is a cigar blended by AJ Fernandez.  It has a sweet hay smell to the wrapper and a somewhat loose draw after cutting.  Once lit up, this one starts with a full-bodied blast of pepper and coffee flavor.  In the second third it calms down and has a delicious sweet creamy flavor with some spice on the finish.  The construction was perfect on all three sticks.  Overall, we liked the kick in the teeth at the start and the amazing flavor of the second third.  This was a fun cigar and is definitely worth trying out – we think you’ll like it!

IamDarren: very nice medium brown wrapper, kinda leathery feel. Sweet hay note coming from the wrapper.
7:42 PM
IamDarren: I guess this one is called the Hoyo La Amistad…
7:42 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Mmmmm, the La Amistad has a sweet tobacco smelling wrapper. Looks nice too. Perfect draw after a real shallow cut.
7:43 PM
IamDarren: nice easy draw here as well
7:44 PM
Terry1: Would be nice to have the name on the band. Agree with the wrapper notes. Mine had an open draw with some musty hay and cedar notes. Ready to light up.
7:45 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Yeah, stupid not to. There’s another one in this batch that General sent us that doesn’t have the name – the silver and black skull one.
7:45 PM
IamDarren: they probably figured it would sell way better with AJs name on it vs its actual name
7:45 PM
IamDarren: im ready to light up
7:46 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Lighting up!
7:47 PM
Terry1: The skull one was at the festival this year. It’s the Foundry Time Flies.
7:48 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Wow, this one starts off really rich and full bodied. Getting bitter dark coffee and pepper.
7:49 PM
Terry1: Big blast of pepper to start. Overwhelming everything else.
7:50 PM
IamDarren: Definitely has a Habano wrapper. Plenty of spice and pepper throughout the draw. However, its slightly creamy with a zesty sweetness. I like it.
7:51 PM
Terry1: Getting that coffee note mentioned. A hint a sweetness in the mix too.
7:51 PM
IamDarren: great smoke production and burn
7:52 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Smoke production is excellent on mine too, burn started off wonky but might correct itself.
7:52 PM
IamDarren: i get a hint of coffee on the finish but that sweetness seems to be building up.
7:53 PM
IamDarren: pepper is backing off a bit
7:54 PM
Terry1: The sweetness is building on mine as the pepper backs down.
7:57 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: The pepper is backing down on mine too, this is a really interesting smoke. Was worried for a second.
7:58 PM
Terry1: Liking the aroma and the pepper in the sinus now that it’s more manageable. Getting a heavy black coffee note on the finish that’s heavy on my palate. Not caring for that much.
7:58 PM
IamDarren: flavors are really starting to balance out on mine. Starting to really like the flavor combo. Starts off sweet and spicy then gets really creamy and finishes with a hint of coffee.
8:02 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I can’t decide if I love or hate the coffee note on it, but this thing sure is off to a fun start.
8:04 PM
Terry1: I agree the flavors are good right now. Nice balance between the spice and the sweetness.
8:06 PM
IamDarren: this one is really starting to remind me of the Diesel Unlimited. Love the balance of the habano’s zesty spice with the creamy finish.
8:09 PM
Terry1: Wow these are less expensive than I would have guessed, under $5 by the box.
8:10 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Yeah, that’s a pretty good price for these. Started off like a firecracker, is really becoming delicious right now. Getting a bit of cinnamon.
8:15 PM
IamDarren: im finding if i smoke slow im getting a lot of subtle flavors. If it heats up a bit it is still good but the spice starts to get strong and i get a little acidity on the finish.
8:17 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Good point, it does seem to be much better when smoked slow.
8:17 PM
IamDarren: just about to the halfway mark, seems to be burning slow
8:20 PM
Terry1: I agree with the smoking slower. It does bring out some subtle flavors. Mine is burning great with a solid ash. Bands came off cleanly.
8:26 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: My bands popped right off too.
8:31 PM
IamDarren: im into the last third now. Flavors are still good but getting a little muddy. Less complexity.
8:32 PM
Terry1: I’m starting the last third too. Agree the complexity is gone. Starting to feel some of the strength now. I expect it will be full strength by the time we get done.
8:39 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Had a computer fail. You guys are right, not as into this final third as the first two. Just lacking a little something.
8:41 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I wonder what the agreement is to have AJ blend these for Hoyo. Always curious about the inner workings.
8:44 PM
IamDarren: AJ probably gets most of the profit. Probably just liscensed the Hoyo name.
8:47 PM
IamDarren: mine is almost finished. Picked up a little strength but flavor is pretty consistent. Last third was definitely not as good as the first two thirds but overall not bad.
8:48 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Mine is real close. Just a few puffs left. Ratings coming.
8:49 PM
Terry1: I’m about done too. Agree it didn’t end as well as the first half. It did have some strength but not as much as I expected.
8:53 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I LOVED the second third. Thought first third was good too, started off a crazy pepper bomb and slowly subsided – the opposite of most cigars. Final third was lackluster. Fun cigar!
8:53 PM
IamDarren: my expectations were pretty high with that AJ Fernandez band on there. It was a win overall. If that last third had kept up the complexity it would have been a top 10 cigar.
8:54 PM
Terry1: First half was great, got muddy in the final third. Agree this was a good AJ blend.
8:54 PM
IamDarren: The transition from the pepper bomb to the sweet and creamy second third was definitely a highlight. Wish it would have come later in the cigar so the last third might not have fallen short.
