Up for review is the Hoyo de Monterrey Edicion de Cumpleanos 150 cigar. Yeah, that’s a mouthful. It means birthday edition, the 150th to be exact. This stick has a nice looking oily and dark wrapper leaf. This one starts off with a bang, sweet and peppery with some coffee flavor. Really delicious. As the cigar progresses it becomes more one-dimensional with lots of earthy flavor. This is a pretty strong cigar, so be prepared! Overall, we loved that first third, but it got boring from there. We think you might find it’s worth a shot.

StraightUpCigars: This puppy has a nice sweet tobacco smell from the dark wrapper leaf.Open draw after a shallow cut.
Terry1: The Hoyo has a nice dark oily wrapper with a faint barnyard note.
Terry1: Did a shallow cut on mine and the draw is about right. I get a pecan note on the cold draw. Lighting.
Terry1: Initial puffs are sweeter than I expected. Very nice aroma. Some pepper coming through the sinus early.
StraightUpCigars: Really tasty start with slightly bitter coffee, nutty, and a faint sweetness.
StraightUpCigars: I really like the start of this one, am curious how the rest will smoke.
Terry1: Same here. Interesting transition within the draw. I’m getting a nice fruity sweetness initially then a bold pepper, kind of stings the sinus, then that coffee note on the finish. Quite a ride.
StraightUpCigars: Really tasting the pepper you mentioned now, it lingers on your tongue too.
Terry1: Pepper is starting to fade into the background now. Liking that sweetness. Also getting some earth with the coffee. Draw tightened up a little but there is still lots of smoke. Burn is a little wavy.
Terry1: Get to see Boston (the band) Saturday for the first time. Really excited for the concert. A cold front is moving through on Friday and will drop the temps into the low 80s. Perfect for a night out.
StraightUpCigars: That’s really sweet. I haven’t seen them either. Did you read about the ticketmaster settlement? I saw that ZZtop was one of the options local to me, so we’re planning to use one of our free pairs to see them again.
Terry1: I haven’t heard of that. I’ll have to see what is available here. I saw ZZTop last year. Excellent show.
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, they put on a good show. Check out the settlement, if you bought tickets from them since 99 you’ll be getting some much-deserved freebies.
StraightUpCigars: Still enjoying this smoke. Mine is getting real earthy now, less sweet and less pepper.
Terry1: Same here. Getting real earthy.
StraightUpCigars: One thing is for sure, the smoke production is awesome on mine, real easy to puff on.
Terry1: Into the middle third and I’m feeling some strength. The large band came off easily.
StraightUpCigars: Ash is dropping pretty easy for me, watch that keyboard!
Terry1: My draw is getting really tight. Getting harder to smoke. I’m thinking of using a poker to open it up again.
StraightUpCigars: Bummer. Mine is the opposite, too open, if anything.
Terry1: Used the poker and managed to pull out part of a leaf. Drawing better now.
StraightUpCigars: Mine is definitely getting bolder. Some bitterness creeping in, but still very enjoyable.
Terry1: I’m not liking mine as much. It’s too earthy for my taste. The first third was much better for me. I hate to say it but I’m quickly losing interest in this cigar. I’m hoping the sweetness returns in the final third. The strength is getting to me too.
StraightUpCigars: I hear ya. On one hand I like that it transitioned, on the other that first third was really awesome.
Terry1: I hate to say this but the cigar is winning. I’m going to have to stop. If I smoke any more I’m afraid I’ll be getting sick soon. My head is swimming. Not what I expected. Go ahead and finish. I can wait.
StraightUpCigars: I feel some strength, but it hasn’t been too bad for me. I did eat right before this though. Ratings coming!
StraightUpCigars: I loved the sweet and peppery with coffee start of the first third, but the final third was too one-dimensional. Still, a good cigar in my book.
Terry1: Loved how this cigar started. Lost my interest halfway. Got too strong in the final third for me but if you like strong cigars I would suggest trying one.
