Gunslinger Drifter – Cigar Review

Gunslinger Drifter Cigar 3
The Gunslinger Drifter is a cigar by a small shop called Outlaw Cigar.  It may be blended and sold by a small company, but it was made using tobacco from by a very big name: AJ Fernandez.  This is a really nice looking cigar with a box-pressed figurado shape.  Once lit up, we tasted a fruit-like sweetness, lots of pepper, and with slightly bitter coffee flavor.  Later on, a vanilla sweetness surprised us and the cigar slowly became peppery and spicy again as it ended.  Overall, the construction was flawless and the flavor fantastic.  We couldn’t get enough of this complex cigar, and highly recommend it.  For the time being, they’re only sold online at Outlaw.com as far as I know.  Enjoy!

Gunslinger Drifter Cigar 2
7:34 PM
StraightUpCigars: This Gunslinger Drifter has a nice looking oily wrapper. I get a woody tobacco smell from the wrapper. It’s got a real tight draw, hopefully that opens up. Loving the box-pressed perfecto shape.
7:36 PM
Terry1: The Gunslinger Drifter is blended by AJ Fernandez for Outlaw Cigars. It has a Habano 2000 wrapper, a Sumatra binder and Nicaraguan and Honduran fillers. You can order these from the Outlaw Cigars website. I bought these directly from Kendall at last years cigar festival.
7:37 PM
IamDarren: Cool, a new botique that gets tobacco and blending from AJ. Smart
7:38 PM
IamDarren: It definitely looks like a very well made, high end cigar. Nice figurado shape with a slight box press
7:38 PM
IamDarren: easy draw after the clip, getting a creamy sweet cedar note on the cold draw
7:39 PM
StraightUpCigars: Kansas City company too, Darren.
7:39 PM
Terry1: My draw is a little snug but it mostly from the perfecto shape. I’ve smoked this before and it usually opens up once it gets past the narrow tip. Getting the same cedar notes on the cold draw.
7:40 PM
IamDarren: I better make a point to stop by there sometime. Just looked it up. They have a huge walk in humidor.
7:40 PM
IamDarren: Well guys im excited to get this one started. Are we all ready?
7:41 PM
Terry1: It looks like they have some wild parties there.
7:41 PM
StraightUpCigars: Ready to go.
7:42 PM
IamDarren: Lighting up now
7:43 PM
Terry1: Lit easily enough. It’s already opening up. Lots of smoke. Got some sting in the sinus right off the bat.
7:44 PM
StraightUpCigars: Getting a somewhat mild mix of earthy and pepper flavors. Spicy finish.
7:45 PM
IamDarren: lit super easily, nice thick creamy smoke. Getting a nice bright pepper note on the top of my mouth but its met with lots of sweetness, some earth, and maybe a hint of coffee on the finish. Nice!
7:47 PM
IamDarren: very dark ash with rings, burn line is decent
7:48 PM
Terry1: Pepper still dominating on mine. I’ve got hints of the sweetness, earth and coffee. Hopefully the pepper calms down and lets the other flavors through.
7:49 PM
IamDarren: yeah, the pepper is getting a bit stronger and moving into the back of the sinus. Very bold but good.
7:51 PM
StraightUpCigars: Not sMy only critique of this brand is that they offer this same cigar (gunslinger) with a bunch of different versions. The problem is that the names are all irrelevant, like drifter, and it doesn’t list what the tobacco is in them… just some flavors to expect.
7:52 PM
IamDarren: i was just looking at that… was wondering if they are slightly different blends or just different wrappers
7:52 PM
IamDarren: when you click on trading post it lists Gunslinger as one of three or four different brands they offer.
7:53 PM
StraightUpCigars: I don’t know, they make it sound like different blends. It’s just so overwhelming. I wish it was just Gunslinger Habano or whatever.
7:53 PM
Terry1: From what I remember each cigar is a different blend but I could be wrong. I’ve had the Black Powder and the Perdition and they are both different from the Drifter.
7:54 PM
IamDarren: is this a limited size also? It doesn’t list it on the website
7:55 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is taking on a fruity note with friendly bitterness. I really like it.
7:55 PM
StraightUpCigars: Burn is good. Draw opened up. Real impressive cigar so far.
7:55 PM
IamDarren: just tapped the ash off at 1 inch. Got a bit of tunneling going on but not bad. Pepper is starting to back off a little. More of the sweetness is coming through.
7:55 PM
Terry1: Good question. I don’t know. It may have been a new size for the blend and they just didn’t update their site.
7:58 PM
IamDarren: dang it Terry, you were supposed to spend an hour researching this cigar so you could fill us in But really, nice find. I used to pride myself on finding these new botique blends but you beat me to it.
7:58 PM
Terry1: Pepper is backing down on mine too. I’m getting a fruity sweetness with what I want to call a black coffee note. Slightly bitter but pleasant.
7:59 PM
Terry1: I wouldn’t have know about it either if I didn’t meet them last year. Nice people. Kendall is a party guy!
8:00 PM
StraightUpCigars: Did he have the party girls there with him?
8:02 PM
Terry1: Lol, no, his wife was with him. I asked for a calendar but they forgot to bring them. I did get one of their shirts with a smoking cowboy skull on it.
8:03 PM
StraightUpCigars: He must be fun to hang out with, he’s got a really impressive lineup of cigar celebs coming through.
8:04 PM
Terry1: If I ever make it to Kansas it’s one of the places I’ll visit.
8:04 PM
Terry1: Darren will be another.
8:06 PM
IamDarren: grab a few Outlaw cigars and come on down. I will cook some steaks and we can smoke a cigar
8:06 PM
StraightUpCigars: And the Fick fossil museum. You ever been there Darren?
8:07 PM
Terry1: Cigar is smoking well, even burn with a firm draw. Ash is a little flakey but not a big deal. Lots of sweetness right now. Crazy how the cigar can go from such a bold pepper to sweetness that quickly.
8:07 PM
IamDarren: no, where is that?
8:07 PM
IamDarren: I really don’t get out much
8:07 PM
StraightUpCigars: Off 70 on the way to CO. Creepy lady used to findd dinosaur fossils on her propery and make them into “artwork”.
8:08 PM
IamDarren: lol, interesting
8:08 PM
StraightUpCigars: If you’re into the weird and wacky, it’s a good one.
8:08 PM
Terry1: Sounds weird enough to see.
8:09 PM
Terry1: The sweetness is changing from the fruity to more of a vanilla for me. Really delicious right now.
8:10 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine sounds pretty much the exact same as yours, Terry. This is the third big transition and it’s keeping it interesting. Good smoke.
8:11 PM
IamDarren: i started to get some of that fruity flavor and then the pepper came back for a few puffs. Now it seems to be trying to mellow out a little.
8:11 PM
IamDarren: crossed the halfway mark, going to start removing bands
8:13 PM
StraightUpCigars: That sweetness is increasing to insane levels right now. Really unusual since I’m crossing into the final third (yeah, yeah, I know)
8:13 PM
Terry1: I took off the skinny secondary band without incident. Props to whoever had to put that one on. I would have had glue all over the place.
8:18 PM
IamDarren: lol, must have dabbed it on with a q-tip
8:19 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’d “accidently” add to much glue so I could pocket a few at the end of the shift
8:20 PM
StraightUpCigars: Spice is picking up on mine in a big way. Sweet coffee, pepper, and spice.
8:25 PM
Terry1: Some spice coming through on mine now. Really enjoying this cigar. Starting to feel some nicotine. Price is about $8 a stick. A little on the high side but worth it in my opinion.
8:26 PM
IamDarren: im loving it so far, nice complex flavors. Strength is ramping up in the last third but not getting hot and not too much pepper. Just right.
8:34 PM
StraightUpCigars: I am too. I never thought we’d have a chance at a good follow up to last week’s, but this is it.
8:36 PM
Terry1: Picking an AJ blend almost always delivers. The guy is on fire.
8:37 PM
StraightUpCigars: True. Good move on Outlaw’s part.
8:39 PM
IamDarren: one of the descriptions for another blend said they tried several tabacaleras in several different countries before they settled on a blend. AJ must have locked down a lot of great tobacco.
8:39 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’d say so.
8:40 PM
IamDarren: Mine is almost finished. Pepper is almost completely gone. Great flavor throughout the whole cigar, from beginning to end.
8:40 PM
Terry1: Smoke is getting hot but I can’t stop puffing. Getting a little stronger, maybe medium plus, but not overwhelming. Still delivering a sweet coffee spicy flavor.
8:40 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is all done. I just set it to rest. Smoked it right to the nub.
8:42 PM
Terry1: Hate to do it but I’m setting mine down. Getting too short and hot to hold. Great flavors.
8:43 PM
Terry1: Loved that transition early on from the bold pepper to the sweetness.
8:45 PM
IamDarren: what can i say, great flavor the entire length of the cigar. Can’t say that for most other sticks, even the ones i love
8:46 PM
StraightUpCigars: Great scores! Such a good smoke with big transitions and a price that won’t send you to the poor house. Really enjoyable.
8:46 PM
IamDarren: agreed, more please
8:46 PM
Terry1: Another winner from AJ. The only issue I have is getting them. Luckily I bought a box at the festival.
