Flores y Rodriguez 10th Ann. Reserva Limitada – Cigar Review

FyR Reserva Limitada Cigar 2
The Flores y Rodriguez 10th Ann. Reserva Limitada sounds promising being for the 10th anniversary of the Pinar del Rio factory.  It has an oily wrapper leaf with spicy tobacco smell and taste prior to lighting.  Once lit, the flavor was complex mix of sweet creaminess and spicy pepper.  We tasted many different nuances while smoking: hints of peppermint, floral, tannin, charred oak.  We had some lopsided burns on these, but no major issues.  Overall, this cigar had a nice flavor profile, but is just too darn expensive.  Construction issues, no matter how minor, really aren’t excusable in a cigar at this price point.  There are some real masterpiece cigars in the $15 range, this one is very good but not as good as some others.

7:32 PM
IamDarren: Great looking stick. Lots of sheen and very minimal veins.
7:34 PM
IamDarren: Easy draw after the clip and a fairly complex flavor coming off the cold draw. Kinda like cocoa and spice, hard to pin down.
7:34 PM
StraightUpCigars: That is a very oily wrapper! Draw a hair on the loose side and has a spicy tobacco taste on the cold draw.
7:36 PM
Terry1: Same here with the oily wrapper. My draw however is on the snug side and I’m getting the spice with some grassy notes on the cold draw. Ready to light up!
7:37 PM
IamDarren: lighting up
7:37 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lighting!
7:40 PM
StraightUpCigars: Interesting start with relatively muted flavor until that big peppery finish kicks in.
7:41 PM
IamDarren: Wow this thing packs some bold flavor. Lots of that Sweet grassy note that Terry mentioned up front. Immediately morphs to a bold spice and charred oak flavor on the finish. Very unique.
7:41 PM
IamDarren: retrohale has quite a bit of pepper in the sinus
7:43 PM
Terry1: Great flavors on the first few puffs. I’m getting a unique sweetness, pepper and a tannin of some sort. Plenty of smoke. Good start.
7:47 PM
IamDarren: im starting to remember why i like habanos so much. That sweet grass up front followed by more semi sweet spice. Its a very bright and flavorful smoke so far. Really wakes up the palate.
7:48 PM
StraightUpCigars: The flavor has really changed from the first few puffs, getting a rich, meaty, and tangy main flavor with a more balanced amount of pepper and spice on the finish.
7:50 PM
IamDarren: just read the info. It looks like they released this blend to commemorate their 10th Anniversary. Has it been that long? I can remember when we had just discovered PDR on Famous.
7:51 PM
IamDarren: Guess that Blue Label i sent you Terry must be WELL aged… lol
7:52 PM
Terry1: Yeah it must be! That’s the old band. I’ll have to try it soon.
7:52 PM
StraightUpCigars: Wow, only 10 years and they’ve grown into a massive company. Good for them.
7:53 PM
Terry1: Over an inch in and I agree the pepper is more balanced now. Getting more of the sweet grass, oak kind of flavors. Burn is a little off from a small void near the wrapper.
7:54 PM
IamDarren: I think Abe must have realized that his master blender was they key to his success and made him a partner. Most of the new blends are under the FyR logo.
7:56 PM
IamDarren: My cigar is becoming much more balanced and creamier. Kinda glad they tried to make a well balanced Habano cigar. Would have been easy to go the Maduro route.
7:57 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, this one is settling in nicely, I was unsure of it on the first few puffs.
7:57 PM
Terry1: Not a fan of the band. For a 10th Anniversary cigar the band looks bland. It looks like it went through the printer with only one color left. I can see a design but the all white makes it looked unfinished.
7:59 PM
StraightUpCigars: I agree. The only positive thing I can say about it is that it will really stick out amongst the crowd… not too many white and green bands out there.
8:00 PM
IamDarren: lol, yeah it needs a little silver or gold leaf to make it pop
8:00 PM
IamDarren: ash is a bit flakey and they burn has been a little wavy but manageable
8:03 PM
Terry1: Burn self corrected on mine. Halfway and the flavors and changing some. The pepper is fading away and a pronounced sweetness, maybe floral, is emerging. Still detect the grass and tannin in the finish. I’m liking it.
8:05 PM
IamDarren: yeah i agree, im into the second third and the sweet spice is coming to the front of my palate.
8:06 PM
IamDarren: almost like peppermint, but more creamy
8:08 PM
StraightUpCigars: Maybe power of suggestion, but I see what you’re getting at with the peppermint flavor
8:09 PM
IamDarren: took me awhile to scroll down to the price list … I must have stole these on cbid. Retail is 9 bucks a stick.
8:10 PM
IamDarren: and thats for the Robusto, this is the Toro
8:10 PM
StraightUpCigars: Wow, big price tag.
8:11 PM
Terry1: Starting to feel some nicotine. I’ve been puffing hard on this one both enjoying the flavors and trying to figure them out. And now I am getting a minty note. Thanks Darren.
8:11 PM
IamDarren: lol, hey i just call em like i see em…. or taste em
8:11 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lol! Yeah, the said Nicaraguan filler, so watch out.
8:12 PM
IamDarren: starting to bring back memories of my first Oliva Serie V. I guess its the sign of a well blended Habano.
8:13 PM
StraightUpCigars: Huh, yeah the flavors are similar but that V is about 5 times fuller bodied and stronger IMO
8:14 PM
IamDarren: yeah i suppose, i just remember thinking that with all the sweet spice it was going to be a lighter bodied stick, then by the last third i had slumped down in my chair and was seeing things.
8:16 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lol!
8:16 PM
IamDarren: think im going to make a burn correction. One side of the wrapper has pretty much quit burning.
8:16 PM
Terry1: Bands popped off without incident. Noticing the oily wrapper again. It’s so shiny it looks like it’s sweating from the heat. Maybe I should say “glowing”.
8:18 PM
IamDarren: Seems to be a common issue with their sticks, very oily and tend to burn wavy and lopsided. The last box of PDR blue labels i bought are finally burning better after over a year and a half of aging.
8:19 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, normally they get a pass because of low price, but this one should be perfect.
8:20 PM
IamDarren: must have been a flaw in the wrapper or binder because after only a small correction it caught up and is burning fine.
8:21 PM
IamDarren: seems to have mellowed even more. Almost zero pepper now and even creamier
8:24 PM
Terry1: Mine is burning fine. I agree the pepper is gone. Slightly sweet and creamy now with a baking spice thrown in. Still liking it.
8:25 PM
StraightUpCigars: The pepper is gone on mine too. Nice charred oak flavor with a faint floral and/or mint in there keeping it interesting. Spice on the finish.
8:27 PM
IamDarren: nice flavor transitions, very slow burn. Almost an hour in and im still in the second third.
8:31 PM
StraightUpCigars: I am too. Definitely getting your money’s worth on this one.
8:34 PM
IamDarren: starting to salivate and sink into the chair though. Last third, here we come!
8:36 PM
Terry1: Yeah I’m starting to really feel this one too. Draw was getting a little stiff but using a poker helped.
8:39 PM
StraightUpCigars: Had to do my first burn correction on some wrapper that wouldn’t burn. Other than that and flaky ash, nothing drastic,
8:42 PM
IamDarren: loosing some of the sweetness and creaminess in the last third. Not getting dry but more of that charred oak is coming through.
8:44 PM
Terry1: Smoke for me is getting hot. Might be the tighter draw I have. Definitely getting creamier as I near the end.
8:48 PM
IamDarren: darn it, mine just starting burning lopsided again and it is heating up as well. Getting more spice with the heat.
8:50 PM
StraightUpCigars: What a beast this one is! Smoke is getting hot and the flavor profile is turning a bit bitter. Going to try a purge.
8:51 PM
Terry1: Yeah I’m getting a stronger spice with the heat too. I’m thinking I’m about done. Strength is getting to me.
8:52 PM
IamDarren: im with Terry on this one, I have about an inch left to go but with such a long smoke time on the Toro i may put it down.
8:54 PM
StraightUpCigars: Sounds like a plan, ratings coming
8:58 PM
IamDarren: Going on flavor alone i would buy more because i love a good habano. Too bad there were construction issues and the price is so high.
8:59 PM
StraightUpCigars: This one had all the makings of a great cigar, but it just didn’t do it for me. The flavor were a little bit underwhelming and the minor construction issues inexcusable at this price. Just not really worth the price tag in my opinion.
8:59 PM
Terry1: Looks like we pretty much agreed on this cigar. Good flavors. A little pricey. Try one and see if it’s for you.
