Fernando Leon Family Reserve – Cigar Review

fernando-leon-cigar-2
Up for review is the Fernando Leon Family Reserve cigar.  This was created by Fernando Leon in honor of his father.  It has a fantastic looking wrapper leaf and good draw after cutting. Once lit up, it has a sweet and bready flavor with a little cedar and some spice.  The flavors remained largely the same throughout the smoke and the construction was good.  Overall, the Family Reserve delivered consistent and pleasant flavors.  It’s a little pricey, but it’s a reliable and enjoyable smoke.  We recommend trying one out.

StraightUpCigars: Great looking wrapper and good draw after cutting. Getting spice on the cold draw.
7:47 PM
Terry1: The Fernando Leon has a somewhat smooth wrapper with minimal veins. The draw is good with musty cedar notes.

StraightUpCigars: Lighting up!

Terry1: Lighting up
7:49 PM
StraightUpCigars: Getting a mild creamy, nutty, and cedary flavor with some spice.
7:51 PM
Terry1: I’m liking the initial puffs. Started with some pepper, cedar and some sweetness.
7:54 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’m liking it too. Starting to increase to medium body and I’m getting the pepper you mentioned.
7:59 PM
StraightUpCigars: Decided to do a quick burn correction. It was runnning on one side
8:01 PM
Terry1: Interesting flavors. They seem to fade and grow, switching places. One minute the spice comes through then a few minutes later the sweetness comes through. There is a cedar and coffee note that floats underneath it all. Burn on mine is a bit wavy but not needing a correction.
8:04 PM
StraightUpCigars: Good description. I like the flavor best after resting for a minute.

Terry1: I decided to make an improvement to the man cave. I’ve got a box fan that blows out a window. Works fine in the summer when I can leave the door open. When it gets colder and the door is closed it can’t keep up and I end up sitting in a cloud. I’m installing the biggest bathroom exhaust fan I could find at Lowes with a timer switch. It should keep the air fresher in here. Excited to try it out.
8:09 PM
StraightUpCigars: Wow, that’s awesome! I bet the exhaust fan really clears the air. Now you just need AC.
8:13 PM
Terry1: I have a portable cooler that helps during the summer. The cold is more of a problem than the heat. During the winter the smoke can get bad out here.
8:15 PM
Terry1: Into the middle third, spice has faded, still has the sweetness and a bready note, maybe a little cedar. I’m enjoying the cigar. Still burning and drawing okay.
8:16 PM
StraightUpCigars: If for some reason the exhaust fan doesn’t work as planned, try one of these. We use ours all the time – push cold air inside the house or to cool us on the back deck. http://www.airchaser.com/centrifugal-fans/blower-fan-xpower-p-230at.html?_vsrefdom=wordstream&keyword_session_id=vt~adwords|kt~|mt~|ta~58785561019&gclid=CI2xrbvY5c8CFQqJaQodS-8LNA

StraightUpCigars: I like this vitola, really burns and smokes well. Lost a piece of wrapper with the band though.
8:26 PM
Terry1: I agree it’s nice to smoke a cigar with a smaller ring gauge. Seems like everything is getting bigger. A little bit of spice is coming through again as I approach the final third. Goes well with the mild sweetness. My band came off cleanly.
8:30 PM
StraightUpCigars: Starting to get some of that coffee and the spice is picking up.
8:33 PM
Terry1: Got about an inch left. Even though there’s been little change I am liking the flavors. The strength is getting into the medium range for me but I’m not expecting it to get much stronger. Burn corrected itself and it’s near perfect now.
8:34 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, my burn has been fine too after that first correction.
8:39 PM
StraightUpCigars: Looks like these run about $8 ea normally, I paid less on Cbid.
8:41 PM
Terry1: I’m done. Got too short to smoke. Good flavors all the way to the end. Strength stayed in the medium range.
8:43 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine’s real close too, ratings coming.
8:45 PM
StraightUpCigars: I liked this cigar. Steady but pleasant flavor the whole way. Great vitola. Little pricey, but I don’t think this is a bad buy.
8:46 PM
Terry1: I enjoyed this cigar. It was easy to smoke with good flavors. It is approachable to most everyone. Easy to recommend. Price was the only critical point but you can find these for less than msrp.
