This week’s cigar review is of the Bucanero Canon Cubano Maduro. Darren sat this one out, so it was just Terry and I this week. This is a behemoth cigar, 6X60! The wrapper is really nice looking and the cigar smells good too. After cutting, we found that the draw was pretty tight. We are hoping it will improve as we start to smoke it. Once we got smoking we found that it had a nice sweet earthiness with some pepper and spice on the finish. Unfortunately, the tight draw continued until we took extreme measures to fix it. Chewing and prodding was not enough for Terry’s cigar, he had to get a poker to open up the draw. This cigar would have been much better without the construction issues, but it is still a decent cigar the way it is. It packed a lot of flavor in the second third, and that really made the whole smoke worth it. For the amount of tobacco in this stick, it is a heck of a bargain.

7:39 PM
Terry1: Lets do the maduro Canon. It says it’s smooth and spicy.

7:41 PM
StraightUpCigars: taking pics now.

7:44 PM
StraightUpCigars: All right. They definitely did not skimp on the tobacco on this thing. It is huge!

7:45 PM
Terry1: I don’t think I’ll ever get used to the 6 x 60 cigar size. The Canon has a nice almost black wrapper, very smooth.

7:46 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, the wrapper is fantastic on it. Has a sweet hay smell to it. I’m going to cut it.

7:48 PM
Terry1: Clipped mine. I’m surprised it has a slightly snug draw. As big as this cigar is I expected an airy draw. Getting a nice chocolate and wood flavor on the cold draw. Lighting up.

7:50 PM
StraightUpCigars: That surprised me too. Mine is snug, but I get plenty of smoke on each puff. I am getting a sweet earthy and creamy smoke with a little raisin in there. Real goo start.

7:50 PM
Terry1: Make sure you have a full lighter before lighting. There’s a lot of tobacco to get burning!

7:52 PM
StraightUpCigars: More on that draw, I used a large xicar cutter and barely fit around the cap. I took a pretty deep cut, but the draw is still fairly tight. Hopefully that will help keep this huge cigar cool.

7:54 PM
Terry1: My smoke is on the light side. I’m having trouble with the draw being a little too tight. It almost feels like the cigar is going out. I do get some sweetness when I can taste the cigar. I’m hoping it will open up as we smoke.

7:55 PM
StraightUpCigars: I had the same problem. I rolled the cigar around between my fingers rather harshly and it has opened up the draw pretty well.

7:59 PM
Terry1: This is making me mad. There’s no excuse for having a snug draw on a cigar this size. I’m focusing more on the stupid draw and not on the flavors.

8:00 PM
Terry1: Now my cigar is hot to the halfway point, not good.

8:01 PM
StraightUpCigars: Bummer, I really hope it comes around.

8:04 PM
Terry1: Okay I used a poker and drilled out some of the tobacco. Draw is better. Now I can taste the spice.

8:04 PM
StraightUpCigars: My cigar is very mild bodied right now. Has a pleasantly sweet earthy flavor with some spice on the finish.

8:05 PM
StraightUpCigars: That’s good! I was getting worried there.

8:05 PM
Terry1: This cigar is going to take all night to smoke. Mine does have an even burn.

8:06 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, this one is a slow smoker! My burn is even too, but the ash is pretty flaky.

8:09 PM
Terry1: My ash is behaving. I agree, this is light in body and flavor. I’m surprised because of the dark wrapper and the ring gauge I thought we’ed have more of a flavor bomb.

8:12 PM
Terry1: It does have a nice sweet earthiness like you mentioned. Getting a little spice in the retrohale. Good flavors just wish they were a bit stronger.

8:13 PM
StraightUpCigars: I have to agree, the flavors are a little understated. BUT it is still very enjoyable. I think all that mildness comes from the very long time he ages them before selling.

8:15 PM
Terry1: Do you know how long they are aged?

8:15 PM
StraightUpCigars: I can’t recall, but it is something like 6 years. Let me check.

8:17 PM
StraightUpCigars: 5 years!

8:19 PM
Terry1: It shows. No harshness at all, very smooth.

8:21 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is definitely building spice right now. This second third is far better than the first.

8:23 PM
StraightUpCigars: I must say, I REALLY don’t like large RG cigars. They are just uncomfortable in your mouth on so many levels.

8:25 PM
Terry1: Lol. There’s a bit of that with any cigar but the 60s really make you conscious of it.

8:27 PM
StraightUpCigars: So true. But in all seriousness it is harder to get a good draw on a large RG because you can’t close your mouth around it.

8:28 PM
Terry1: I must say the second third is going much better. The draw opened up some, I’m getting more smoke and more flavor. The spice is dominating for me but the sweetness is still hanging around. Maybe this will end up better than I expected.

8:35 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine too. I am now getting some more complex flavors creeping in. Espresso and dark chocolate. Good stuff.

8:36 PM
Terry1: I’m noticing the strength has crept up too. I may have to switch to a soda soon.

8:37 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, it is a little strong for sure. A lot of tobacco in this big boy.

8:40 PM
Terry1: Now that you mentioned espresso I taste it too. Very nice.

8:40 PM
StraightUpCigars: Very off topic, but this is hilarious.

8:40 PM
StraightUpCigars: http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/florida-man-mistakes-girlfriend-hog-shoots-her-211904311.html

8:44 PM
StraightUpCigars: I should clarify, the headline is hilarious, her getting shot not so much.

8:44 PM
Terry1: lol. I’ll bet he’ll remain single for a long time.

8:45 PM
StraightUpCigars: Probably for the better!

8:47 PM
StraightUpCigars: I gotta say, my cigar is pretty damn good right now. A lot of flavor and just medium bodied. Tons of spice on the finish. I like how this one is ending.

8:49 PM
Terry1: Damn. I was taking the band off and the wrapper popped. It split in several place from the head to where the band was. Doesn’t seem to have affected the draw. Hopefully I can nurse it along.

8:51 PM
StraightUpCigars: Damn. Was it because of glue? Mine came off pretty well, but I did not try to slide it.

8:53 PM
Terry1: I don’t know what happened. It seemed like the band came off cleanly. No glue on the wrapper that I can tell. It just popped. I even heard it!

8:53 PM
StraightUpCigars: Weird! Well, as long as it still smokes…

8:54 PM
IamDarren: hey fellas, what are you smoking tonight?

8:54 PM
Terry1: Hi Darren! Glad you made it.

8:54 PM
IamDarren: went sun up till sun down today.

8:54 PM
IamDarren: planting corn

8:55 PM
StraightUpCigars: Wow, we have the buccy canon maduro tonight.

8:55 PM
IamDarren: looks like you are having some construction issues maybe

8:57 PM
Terry1: Yeah the draw started tight for me. The wrapper I think was just a fluke. Still smoking well thou.

8:57 PM
StraightUpCigars: Terry has, I got lucky. Just a slightly tight draw and loose ash.

8:57 PM
IamDarren: i’m just getting some supper so i probably won’t light one up tonight. Hope yours finishes well.

8:59 PM
StraightUpCigars: Hope supper is good. I’ve got about 10 mins left on mine. It is ending very well.

9:04 PM
Terry1: I’d agree. I’m glad we stuck it out. I wasn’t happy with the first third but the rest of the cigar has been real tasty! My spice has dropped off and now it’s that slightly sweet coffee flavor.

9:10 PM
Terry1: The burn finally made it to the split and my cigar is starting to fall apart. I’m going to have to set it down. I’d smoke it further if it wasn’t for the split wrapper.

9:10 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’m about there anyways. I’m going to rate it now.

9:13 PM
StraightUpCigars: I thought this cigar was off to a good start, then mellowed out a little too much. The second half was awesome though! Lots of flavor with mild body makes this a good one for just about anyone. Good price too. I would like to try it in a different vitola

9:16 PM
Terry1: I would too. I liked the flavors in the second half. The first half experience almost made me quit. A smaller ring gauge with a better draw would make this a much better cigar in my opinion.

Hey everyone! For this week’s group review we lit up the Capoeira cigar by Jesus Fuego. We loved the look and smell of this cigar, even though the band was a little over the top. The construction was good too, without any major flaws. It smoked well and had very bold flavors, namely sweet earth with a lot of pepper and spice on the finish. While the flavors were good, the cigar remained mostly the same the entire smoke. For such a large vitola we would have preferred more complexity and transitions. We liked the cigar, but wished for a little more. Overall it is a decent buy for the price, but Jesus Fuego has better sticks out there.

7:25 PM
Terry1: Capoeira tonight? I’ll go get it. I think I smoked one of these before. If it’s the one I’m thinking about the flavors were pretty good but it went full strength quickly. I’ll grab a soda for this one.

7:29 PM
StraightUpCigars: Took pics and I am about ready over here.

7:30 PM
IamDarren: ok, got everything, going outside.

7:34 PM
IamDarren: looks like decent construction, very rustic looking wrapper

7:35 PM
IamDarren: great draw, some earth and spice on the cold draw.

7:36 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, very dark wrapper with small veins. Looks good. Draw is perfect after cutting. Cold draw actually tastes a bit like spicy steak to me. Interesting, to say the least.

7:38 PM
IamDarren: great evening to be smoking

7:38 PM
StraightUpCigars: I am going to light this one up here in a second. Yeah, tonight is perfect out.

7:39 PM
IamDarren: how is your cigar Terry, hope you didn’t get the bad apple again.

7:41 PM
Terry1: This cigar looks pretty good. Looks well rolled. Getting the typical barnyard aroma from the wrapper. The draw is a little snug but okay. Getting like a sweet prune on the cold draw. Lighting up.

7:42 PM
IamDarren: ok, lighting up here also

7:42 PM
StraightUpCigars: I went ahead and lit er up. I am getting a nice sweet earthy flavor with some spice on the finish. The sweetness is similar to that of a grapefruit.

7:43 PM
IamDarren: its defenitely sweet with an underlying strength to it. Its really making me salivate!

7:44 PM
IamDarren: getting some black pepper on the roof of my mouth.

7:45 PM
StraightUpCigars: I think Terry’s memory was correct, this one is full bodied quickly.

7:45 PM
Terry1: I agree, getting lots of sweetness up front. As it fades you get the earth and some pepper. Very nice flavor combination.

7:47 PM
IamDarren: sweetness is fading a little. Very earthy now with some pepper and spice. This one really excites the taste buds though.

7:49 PM
StraightUpCigars: My sweetness is all but gone. Black pepper is definitely creeping in.

7:51 PM
IamDarren: burn started out lopsided but quickly evened out. Ash is holding well at about an inch.

7:53 PM
Terry1: Mine has lost the sweetness too. Too bad I was liking it. Pepper building some. Very earthy now. I get a hint of a toasty flavor.

7:55 PM
StraightUpCigars: Ash definitely holds on strong on this one. Good thing too, I think it helps keep it from burning too hot.

7:55 PM
IamDarren: mine is actually starting to mellow a little. Getting a roasted coffee flavor now with the pepper and spice. However, the pepper fades quickly and only the spice is left on the finish.

8:00 PM
Terry1: Pepper seems to be building. I liked how this cigar started but not so much now. I was thinking this was going to be a complex cigar but it quickly went one dimensional and, in my opinion, kind of flat.

8:01 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is mellower now too. I agree Terry, a bit flat for me. Bold flavor, but 1 dimensional.

8:02 PM
IamDarren: going into the second third the sweetness is coming back on mine. I think yours is still transitioning Terry, give in a half inch.

8:02 PM
Terry1: Too bad we don’t have audio. It would be funny to hear how we pronounce the name of this cigar.

8:03 PM
StraightUpCigars: That would be funny!

8:03 PM
IamDarren: lol, yeah i agree its a weird name with a weird band.

8:06 PM
Terry1: Yeah how would you like to be the person who has to glue hundreds of these bands on. I don’t think I could even keep it straight.

8:06 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’ll refrain from the foul comments on that one

8:10 PM
IamDarren: im nearing the band now and am liking the flavor a lot. The fruity sweetness is back now and there is just a hint of spice and pepper to liven it up. There is something else that I can’t place that is mixed with the spice. It adds a bit of creaminess to it.

8:14 PM
StraightUpCigars: The sweetness is coming back on mine too. It is much better than it was 20 minutes ago. Mine is getting a litle too bitter for my comfort zone considering we are only a little past halfway on it. I will make sure to smoke slow.

8:17 PM
Terry1: I’m starting the second third and the flavors have improved for me as well. I’m getting that bitterness too. Might be the Mexican tobacco in it.

8:20 PM
StraightUpCigars: That’s some hard working tobacco…

8:20 PM
IamDarren: drum roll please….

8:22 PM
IamDarren: not getting any bitterness here. this cigar burns well and i think it can heat up quickly. I have been trying to wait a minute between puffs and it seems to be working.

8:23 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, that definitely helps it. My band came off very easily. Pretty cool band on it.

8:23 PM
Terry1: I get a soapy flavor every now and then. Probably part of the bitterness.

8:25 PM
Terry1: I’m having to take a sip of water after every puff just to cleanse the pallet.

8:26 PM
Terry1: I will say the aroma is very nice, it’s just the lingering bitterness I get in the mouth that I’m not liking.

8:27 PM
Terry1: I didn’t realize Jesus Fuego blended this.

8:28 PM
IamDarren: thats what put it on my radar. I like most of his stuff.

8:28 PM
StraightUpCigars: I get the bitterness too, it is not just you. It is only increasing as we approach the end.

8:29 PM
Terry1: I like most of what he does too. Not thrilled with this one thou.

8:30 PM
IamDarren: just crossing into the last third and am getting just a pinch of bitterness. Overall though im still liking it. I like how the spice compliments the sweetness. It has some strengh but defenitely not overpowering.

8:35 PM
StraightUpCigars: This one is not bad, but I have had better from Jesus. Might be improved with age!

8:36 PM
Terry1: I’m starting the last third and I’m feeling it. I’m going to switch to the soda. The burn has been very good and the ash has been solid dropping in one inch chunks. I have slowed down and I can get more of the sweetness and other flavors. The bitterness may have come from smoking to fast and overheating the cigar.

8:44 PM
IamDarren: glad it improved for you Terry, i was starting to think that my cigar was the exception. I think you just have to smoke this one slow.

8:46 PM
StraightUpCigars: Definitely no lack of flavor from this one. Very bold earthy flavor with pepper and spice. Still does not offer the complexity I would have liked from such a full bodied cigar.

8:49 PM
Terry1: The cigar is better now. I imagine smoking this slowly you could make this thing last almost two hours.

8:53 PM
StraightUpCigars: No two hour cigar for me. Mine is finishing up. Where are you guys?

8:58 PM
Terry1: I’m getting close to done. Been nursing the final third for a good 25 minutes. Sweetness is still present with some earth and pepper.

9:02 PM
StraightUpCigars: I just set mine down. She is done! Final third was very full bodied.

9:03 PM
Terry1: I’m setting mine down too. I’d like to try another and smoke the whole thing slowly. That seemed to be the trick to keep the bitterness at bay.

9:04 PM
StraightUpCigars: Agreed, I probably let it heat up too much. Not all user error IMO, I think some cigars tend to burn much hotter and this is one of them.

La Flor Dominicana rebrands its original line “Premium Line” as LFD Light.

La Flor Dominicana, who has a reputation for some of the strongest cigars on the market, will be giving its Connecticut shade wrapped mild cigars a facelift. The changes will include a couple new sizes as well as new shelf friendly packaging.

“This line is very special to me and we need to ensure that it stays consistent with where our brand is today. We have come a long way since we originally released this cigar and most people are unaware that we even make mild cigars,” says Litto Gomez, who co-owns La Flor Dominicana with his wife, Ines Lorenzo-Gomez.

The two vitola additions will be a 54×6, called the Maximo, retailing at $8.50 and the Governador, a 60×6 1/4 that will retail at $9.00. The packaging will be in the company’s taller “space saver” boxes as opposed to the flat wide boxes that seem a bit outdated in today’s humidors.

“We’re obviously known for our fuller bodied cigars and as I travel around the country I meet so many people that have no idea that Litto started with very mild cigars that are still in our portfolio. I’m excited about these changes, because I think there is still a large segment of the market that enjoys a milder smoke,” says Andrew Brennan, Vice President of Sales LFD.

LFD Light is expected to be landing on humidor shelves in May of this year.

La Flor Dominicana is a vertically integrated premium cigar company, where we proudly control the process from the seed to the final grading, inspecting and packing process. Our tobaccos are grown at our farm in La Canella, Dominican Republic. Our factory is located in Tamboril.

This week’s group cigar review is of the George A. Rico V.I.P. cigar. The maduro wrapper is very dark and oily and the cigar smells great! After lighting it, we were met with some really good flavor right off the bat. It was sweet and chocolatey with spice on the finish. Really delicious! The construction was decent, but mine required some work on the draw. The V.I.P. ended just as good as it started, lots of excellent flavor with medium bodied smoke. At roughly $2.50 a cigar, these are a steal! These are definitely something we are considering purchasing a box of. Give them a try!

7:37 PM
StraightUpCigars: The VIP has a nice sweet, musty smell to it. A little chocolatey too. Smells good! The cap is coming loose in a couple of spots, but the wrapper as a whole is very nice.

7:38 PM
IamDarren: construction is great on mine. Nice dark tight wrapper. After the cut the draw is a tad tight but not too bad. Hint of butter and molasses on the cold draw, very intersting.

7:39 PM
Terry1: Nice dark oily maduro wrapper. I’m getting a musty barnyard taste on the cold draw. Construction on mine looks perfect. Lighting up.

7:41 PM
StraightUpCigars: My draw is REALLY tight, hoping that improves in a minute

7:42 PM
IamDarren: oh yeah, i’m liking the flavor on this one. Chocolate mixed with a nuttiness. Buttery texture, not much spice or pepper on the finish.

7:42 PM
IamDarren: ok, getting some spice on the retrohale.

7:42 PM
Terry1: Lots of thick rich smoke. Starts off with a sweet chocolatey and slight spicey flavor. The finish has a sour citrus note. I’m liking it.

7:44 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’m getting chocolate and cream flavor, I agree on the citrus too. No spice for me yet. Very good.

7:45 PM
IamDarren: already the flavors are transitioning a bit. Still chocolatey up front but the finish is getting dryer (less buttery) and I am now getting some pepper.

7:46 PM
IamDarren: i’m loving this stick, especially the retrohale.

7:49 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is surprisingly mellow and mild bodied, but has very good flavor.

7:50 PM
IamDarren: agreed, it has all the flavor of a powerhouse cigar but without the strength. Infact the pepper note is coming in and out on mine. Mostly chocolate with some nuts and spice. I think there is something else on the finsih but i can’t pick it out.

7:52 PM
IamDarren: beware of the ash, mine just dropped off at a half inch.

7:52 PM
Terry1: I agree. There is something in this smoke that’s really good but something I can’t quite identify. I still get the sweetness and a little spice. Burn is a little uneven but not needing correction yet.

7:54 PM
IamDarren: its almost like a blend of spices. they are mellow but different than most cigars. I’m thinking maybe calling it baking spice or something similar. The texture of the smoke makes me think of eating bread.

7:55 PM
StraightUpCigars: Agreed on the bread. For me there is a flavor that reminds me of spiced rum. Fairly even burn and the draw is opening up a bit.

7:57 PM
IamDarren: just wondering the price point on these and if the Maduro is the only blend?

7:57 PM
Terry1: Spiced rum is a good description. Doesn’t have the sweetness of the rum but the mix of spice is there.

7:59 PM
IamDarren: almost to the halfway point and the strength seems to be creeping up a bit.

8:00 PM
Terry1: The VIP is made by George Rico of Gran Habano for the budget friendly market. Price point is 2.50 to 4.00 depending on size. We are smoking the robusto and I paid 2.60. It comes in three wrapper choices, Connecticut, Habano and Maduro.

8:02 PM
StraightUpCigars: What a deal for $2.60! Wow good snag. Did you get tham at a B&M?

8:02 PM
IamDarren: nice! Most of the GH cigars seem to be a good “bang for your buck” The Vintage 02s are still one of my favorites.

8:03 PM
Terry1: I got them online from a B&M store. I couldn’t find them locally.

8:04 PM
Terry1: Lots of flavor for a low priced cigar. I don’t know how they do it but GH does seem to know how to get the most out of the tobacco they use.

8:05 PM
StraightUpCigars: And they did not skimp on this one, very tightly packed!

8:06 PM
IamDarren: agreed, my draw has opened up a bit but not much. It is not getting spongy like some do after you heat them up.

8:07 PM
Terry1: I agree with whoever said the ash was loose. It likes to fall off in quarter inch chunks.

8:08 PM
IamDarren: yeah mine was really bad at first but this ash has held for almost an inch so mine is improving.

8:09 PM
StraightUpCigars: My ash holds on great on this little guy. It has been at higher humidity, though. Humis have not stabilized with change in weather. Stored at 68%.

8:10 PM
IamDarren: I keep most of mine at 70% because i like to age them. The downfall is about 1/4 of the cigars don’t smoke great at that rh so i have to dry box some.

8:10 PM
Terry1: I’m to the point where I need to remove the bands. The VIP band was loose and slid right off. The secondary band with Maduro writen on it, I can’t get off.

8:11 PM
IamDarren: yeah i had to pick at that band awhile to get it loose

8:12 PM
StraightUpCigars: I used to store at 70% but had a mold scare and have backed off to 66% or so.

8:13 PM
Terry1: I’m the same. I keep them at 65-67%.

8:14 PM
IamDarren: Since I started using humi beads (more than required) I have had no trouble. I just make sure to not soak them too much so they can absorb humidity if they need to. After a wet spell the humi in my basement goes over 80 so i have to be careful.

8:15 PM
Terry1: Living in Utah that’s one thing I don’t have to worry about, high humidity. I usually have to add moisture to mine most of the year.

8:17 PM
StraightUpCigars: More on the mold scare, I had busted out a cedar lined cigar a couple of years ago and found it had light mold underneath. After review of all the cigars, some of the cedar lined ones got very slightly moldy. Watct out for the cedar wrapped ones!

8:19 PM
IamDarren: i was actually thinking about making some special cedar trays that could allow you to stack the cigars upright with a little space between each one. I find that cigars that have been stacked tend to sometimes burn unevenly on one side. Its just a theory but I think the cigars need to get air around the whole cigar.

8:20 PM
StraightUpCigars: Good idea. You could totally sell something like that. Stackable singles trays

8:21 PM
Terry1: Pepper is really starting to build as I approach the last third. Getting a little strength too. Interesting transition.

8:22 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, I am finally getting a little pepper and spice for the first time. Good transition, the cigar continues to impress. Medium bodied right now.

8:23 PM
Terry1: I should qualify my last statement. This is not a pepper bomb by any means but compared to how it started I’m getting more pepper spice now.

8:24 PM
IamDarren: the strength on mine has been slowly building since the halfway point. Im almost at the last third and the chocolate has faded some. Now the Spice is probably the dominant flavor. Its still mellow enough though that i would agree with medium bodied.

8:35 PM
Terry1: Well I’m impressed with the VIP Maduro. For a cigar that costs less than three bucks, I found it had lots of nice flavors, great construction and enough going on to keep me interested for the entire smoking time.

8:36 PM
IamDarren: defenitely

8:36 PM
IamDarren: i like it alot, and it doesn’t seem to be getting much stronger as I near the nub.

8:37 PM
StraightUpCigars: Since I have to find something to criticize, the construction on mine could have been a bit better. All in all this is an excellent cigar, and I would have guess a retail price of $8 on it.

8:39 PM
IamDarren: my construction was near perfect, draw was a bit tight to start but opened up in the first third. My only criticism is that the band has a little too much glue.

8:39 PM
Terry1: Agree with the band.

8:43 PM
IamDarren: just laid mine to rest in the tray. Very good cigar!

8:45 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is about there too.

8:45 PM
Terry1: Finished mine and I’m ready for another. Good cigar. Now I’m curious about the other two wrappers.

8:46 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah I bet the one with the connie wrapper is real good!

8:47 PM
IamDarren: I’m guessing the chocolate flavor mostly was from the wrapper. When it mixed with the spice i loved it.

8:47 PM
IamDarren: But i would definitely be up from trying the others.

8:49 PM
Terry1: Looks like a winner!

8:49 PM
StraightUpCigars: Ooooh, I came in on the low end this time. Definitely a big winner!

8:49 PM
IamDarren: you know its good when you still like the taste in your mouth several minutes after you finish.

8:51 PM
StraightUpCigars: That’s what she said.

This week’s group review is of the Perdomo Alabao. These are very affordable sticks selling for just a couple of bucks online. They look and smell excellent, very nice for the price. With high hopes, we lit them up. We were immediately impressed with the flavors. In past experience, Perdomo cigars were sometimes to bland for us. This one is a whole ‘nother story. Tons of flavor up front: sweet earth and cream with a spicy finish. The cigar ended just as well, complex smoke for being mild bodied. All three of us found the Perdomo Alabao to be one hell of a bargain. It comes highly recommended!

7:29 PM
Terry1: I’m ready with the Alabao. I’ve been reading up on this cigar. Sounds promising.

7:33 PM
Terry1: You can really feel the oils on the wrapper. Nice barnyard smell on the wrapper. The draw is a little snug.

7:35 PM
IamDarren: yeah, i get a sweet and spicy note from smelling the wrapper. Nice.

7:35 PM
StraightUpCigars: This is a nice looking cigar. Has an excellent sweet smell, looks good. Draw is good after cutting. I am ready to give it a light.

7:36 PM
IamDarren: ready here as well, draw is perfect.

7:37 PM
StraightUpCigars: Nice sweet and creamy smoke with some spice on the finish. Really good first few puffs.

7:38 PM
IamDarren: great flavor up front, agreed, sweet and creamy. Some earth and nuts as well. Nice spice zing on the finish.

7:39 PM
IamDarren: sweetness is taking on a caramel flavor

7:40 PM
Terry1: Good start. Lots of creamy smoke. I like the sweetness. I get the earth and nuts as well. Some spice in the sinus

7:40 PM
IamDarren: medium bodied for me

7:41 PM
IamDarren: getting a lot of zing on the finsih, almost like the spice is mixing with some citrus.

7:43 PM
Terry1: I get that zing too. I’ll be happy if the cigar stays like this for a while. I’m really liking the flavors. Nice balance between the sweet and the spice.

7:43 PM
StraightUpCigars: Medium body here too. Definitely no lack of flavor

7:44 PM
IamDarren: watch the ash, mine just flaked off.

7:47 PM
IamDarren: if this thing keeps going like this i will have to get more. For being medium bodied the flavor is great.

7:48 PM
StraightUpCigars: This is definitely one of the most flavorful perdomo’s. Good stuff

7:48 PM
Terry1: I was thinking the same thing. I can’t believe this is $4-$5 cigar. Perdomo did a great job.

7:52 PM
Terry1: Wow, looks like you can get a box for around $50 on the auction site.

7:54 PM
IamDarren: i was just looking on famous, they have the robusto sampler for 19 bucks. I got this fiver on the bid site for like 14 or 15 i think.

7:54 PM
StraightUpCigars: Wow, crazy deals. Easily worth it.

7:56 PM
IamDarren: its funny, they list it on their site as the Perdomo Alabao. But they don’t put their name on the band since its an exclusive. I guess Famous figures they will get more sales if people know its from Perdomo.

7:56 PM
IamDarren: the spice on mine has actually faded, its even more creamy now.

7:59 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine has mellowed too. Not anything to complain about. Even burn, good draw, excellent flavor. This is a good one.

8:00 PM
IamDarren: looks like you can pick up a fiver of this toro right now on cigarauctioneer for 15 bucks. Ends in 5 min. if anyones interested.

8:00 PM
Terry1: Spice is fading on mine too. I’m getting more of the roasted nuts and sweetness. My ash fell off without warning.

8:07 PM
IamDarren: i’m about a half inch from the band. It seems to be picking up some complexity. Still not much spice but the citrus flavor is now more prevalant. Its not bitter at all and is very refreshing.

8:08 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is very smooth too. This is more of what I would expect from a Perdomo.

8:08 PM
IamDarren: i think im getting a hint of coffee up front but its immediately being washed over by the sweet citrus flavor.

8:09 PM
IamDarren: band came off wonderfully, just a tiny dab of glue came right off.

8:11 PM
StraightUpCigars: You are a little further along than me. This one is a bit strong, I can feel the nic kick.

8:11 PM
IamDarren: i ate a salad for supper, must be absorbing all the nicotine.

8:11 PM
Terry1: Mine came off easily too. I’m still getting that nutty note. I’m not detecting the citrus yet.

8:12 PM
Terry1: That’s an interesting comment. I had a salad too and I don’t feel any nicotine yet either.

8:13 PM
IamDarren: my ash has been holding better, coupled with a perfect burn and great draw the construction could not be better.

8:14 PM
IamDarren: just noticed the time, this one is burning a bit quick.

8:15 PM
StraightUpCigars: I ate coconut shrimp and a sandwich, I will note not to eat that before a cigar again I did have salad for lunch, though?

8:22 PM
IamDarren: agreed, cigars are defenitely low in calories

8:23 PM
StraightUpCigars: I don’t know, some of the 6×60′s are pretty beefy…

8:23 PM
IamDarren: oh boy, this topic is heading down the wrong path again….

8:24 PM
StraightUpCigars: We have to atleast finish the cigar first

8:24 PM
IamDarren: just starting the last third and the citrus has almost faded out. Its now very sweet and creamy.

8:25 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is sweet and earthy with some espresso flavor. Maybe a bit of spice creeping back in.

8:25 PM
Terry1: My burn is near perfect. Nearing the final third and the spice on mine has picked up again. Still getting a lot of sweetness and earth. And I’m starting to feel the strength now.

8:26 PM
IamDarren: i just stood up… yep getting that nice relaxed feeling from the nicotine.

8:28 PM
IamDarren: ok, getting a little bit of espresso now as well. This sucker is good! No bitterness at all.

8:33 PM
IamDarren: nearing the nub now, its heating up a bit. Draw is getting loose.

8:33 PM
StraightUpCigars: My draw is a little loose too, but nothing bad. Burn is still dead even.

8:34 PM
IamDarren: im glad i got the toros. The robustos would probably only last a half hour.

8:34 PM
IamDarren: well maybe 45

8:35 PM
StraightUpCigars: These are a bit chunky too, ar they 52 RG?

8:35 PM
IamDarren: 6×54

8:35 PM
IamDarren: robustos are 5×54

8:36 PM
StraightUpCigars: That is a big cigar for just over an hour burn time

8:36 PM
IamDarren: i just can’t believe how sweet and creamy it is even at the nub.

8:36 PM
Terry1: My draw is still a little snug just like how it started but it’s smoking great. I’m really enjoying the flavors.

8:37 PM
IamDarren: its defenitely a “candy bar” stick.

8:37 PM
StraightUpCigars: Man it is getting cold out here, it is supposed to get below freezing tonight.

8:38 PM
Terry1: The shorter burn time might be because we are enjoying it so much. I know I’m smoking faster than I normally do. I’m trying to slow down and savor the last of this cigar but it’s hard to do.

8:39 PM
IamDarren: lol, yeah that is defenitely a factor for me. But hey, if its good and doesn’t heat up i’m gonna smoke it fast.

8:39 PM
Terry1: I’ve got a perfect evening here. 70 degrees.

8:40 PM
StraightUpCigars: Nice, that is perfect!

8:40 PM
IamDarren: its cooling down here too, but still around 50. I hear there is a huge front moving through tonight. We are supposed to get rain for the next three days.

8:43 PM
StraightUpCigars: This was a good one.

8:43 PM
IamDarren: well, just started to burn my fingers. Going to put it down and move inside where its warm.

Hey Everyone. This week’s group review is of the Dignity Red Label. This cigar is made up of tobacco grown organically in Costa Rica. None of us were sure what to expect with this one, but we were excited to smoke another small boutique cigar. Upon lighting, we were immediately impressed. The construction and flavor were incredible. Mild in body, but offered a ton of flavor: creamy and cedary with pepper and spice on the finish. The entire smoke was delicious, and the flavors evolved as we smoked. We feel this is an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced smoker, which makes this a very unique cigar. This one is a must try! You can continue reading to see more of the reasons we loved it.

7:39 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine has a nice looking wrapper with some small veins and it smells awesome. Peppery earthy smell. I cut mine and it has a PERFECT draw. Good start over here.

7:43 PM
Terry1: This is a nice looking cigar. Draw is great. Getting a fruity note on the cold draw. Ready to light up.

7:44 PM
IamDarren: not much aroma or flavor on the cold draw for me, but the construction looks good and the draw only has a slight resistance.

7:45 PM
StraightUpCigars: Good news! Let’s light em up.

7:45 PM
IamDarren: you got it

7:46 PM
IamDarren: nice start, lots of creamy smoke. Mostly wood notes with a touch of spice.

7:48 PM
StraightUpCigars: Good start here too. Tons of smoke! Creamy and cedary with a very faint spice. Tastes good.

7:49 PM
IamDarren: it sure is a perfect evening here. Hit 80 earlier today but now is just below 70.

7:49 PM
Terry1: Like how the Dignity is starting! Getting spice, sweetness, cedar and a touch of pepper. Lots of smoke. Good start.

7:50 PM
StraightUpCigars: The story with Dignity is organic growing methods in Costa Rica. They are mostly sold at B&Ms.

7:51 PM
IamDarren: i noticed the name Don Juan on the band. Have we had any of his other blends. The name sounds familiar.

7:53 PM
StraightUpCigars: Certainly rings a bell, I am going to look him up.

7:53 PM
Terry1: There’s a flavor I’m liking that I can’t identify yet. Could be something slightly floral.

7:54 PM
IamDarren: Burn is going very well on my stick. Getting a little more sweetness up front, its light and reminds me of caramel. Also getting a little pepper on the retrohale.

7:55 PM
StraightUpCigars: I love the look of the light gray ash. Good burn line too.

7:57 PM
StraightUpCigars: Didn’t find much on the cigar maker Don Juan. I did find out that there are a lot of Don Juans out there.

7:58 PM
Terry1: This cigar is very aromatic. I’ll bet my wife would like the smell from this one.

7:58 PM
IamDarren: i looked a little too. There is a Don Juan that sells all kinds of organic food in Costa Rica. Maybe it is the same guy…..

7:59 PM
StraightUpCigars: This is one of the most mild bodied cigars I have had in a long time. Not a bad change of pace, really.

7:59 PM
IamDarren: here we go: http://www.costaricacigarstore.com/store/pc/viewPrd.asp?idproduct=348&idcategory=226

The Don’Juan – Cigar Samplers – The Costa Rica Cigar Store

8:01 PM
StraightUpCigars: Damn, not a bad price from a small manufacturer and retailer IMO.

8:04 PM
StraightUpCigars: I think all of the cigars in the pic are under the Dignity name now.

8:07 PM
IamDarren: mine has lost most of the spice and pepper. Its now really mellow with even more sweetenss. I agree with Terry, it has a light floral sweetness too it that doesn’t linger on the palate long but is very enjoyable.

8:08 PM
Terry1: I think I like Costa Rican cigars! I agree it’s mild in body but there’s a lot of subtle flavors popping in and out. It is a nice change from the pepper bombs. Makes me want to try the other cigars in that sampler.

8:09 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah it is very mellow now. There is a floral or fruity flavor in there, for sure.

8:13 PM
Terry1: Ash just fell off in a solid one inch chunk. Burn is getting a little wavey but not needing correction. Nice easy draw, lots of smoke. The sweetness seems to be building. I’m enjoying this one.

8:17 PM
StraightUpCigars: My burn is a little wavy too, Terry. Not bad, though. I have some spice coming back in! I am at about the halfway mark, maybe a bit past.

8:18 PM
Terry1: The Dignity seems to be smoking slowly. I’m getting more of a cedar note now along with the caramel.

8:19 PM
IamDarren: same here, just crossed the half way mark and flavors are pretty much the same. I am getting a hint of spice again, but its very subtle.

8:20 PM
IamDarren: So how on earth did you get these Matt, just went looking for some “off the beaten path” botiques…. or were they in a sampler?

8:21 PM
StraightUpCigars: I was contacted on Twitter out of the blue by Dignity. They were very professional and simply asked for my address. A few days later… wala. Straight Up from Costa Rica.

8:22 PM
IamDarren: Hey thats great! Glad we can help them get some recognition.

8:23 PM
Terry1: I agree. Glad to spread the word on this cigar. The only fault I can find with the Dignity is the availability. I’d like to get some more of these.

8:24 PM
IamDarren: The flavors on mine are starting to get a bit bolder. Picking up that rich woody note i got at the beginning. The sweetness is getting richer and is now bordering on mocha.

8:25 PM
StraightUpCigars: Agreed, I’m not sure what their future plans are as far as retail goes. I think these have potential right now.

8:25 PM
Terry1: Hugh plus, the band came off cleanly. Didn’t even rip the paper.

8:26 PM
IamDarren: i’m really enjoying this sucker. I could see myself getting a box just to have a great cigar for any time of day.

8:27 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine just came off cleanly too.

8:36 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is really ramping up right now. More pepper and spice. Entirely delicious cigar at this point.

8:37 PM
IamDarren: Same here, flavors keep getting bolder but the strength is still pretty mellow. Mabye medium bodied at this point.

8:37 PM
StraightUpCigars: Oh, I did do one burn correction. May not have needed it, but I think it helped.

8:39 PM
Terry1: I agree. I’m liking the journey this cigar is taking. I did a minor correction on mine too.

8:40 PM
IamDarren: none needed here, but the ash has been falling off faster in the second half for some reason.

8:41 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine has a very chewy texture to the smoke. Ridiculous amount of flavor with some espresso joining the fun! Mucho props to Dignity, this one is a hit in my book. Unfortunately mine does not have much left. I am damn near the nub now. Where are you guys?

8:42 PM
IamDarren: nearing the nub here, defenitely getting more pepper now, i can tell that its heating up but still very enjoyable.

8:43 PM
Terry1: You guys are ahead of me. I still have an inch left.

8:44 PM
IamDarren: ok, i have an inch left if i decided to burn my fingers.

8:44 PM
IamDarren: which i might do

8:45 PM
IamDarren: where is a toothpick when you need one?

8:45 PM
StraightUpCigars: I usually check the kitchen first…

8:45 PM
IamDarren: smart ass

8:45 PM
StraightUpCigars: I do my best.

8:47 PM
StraightUpCigars: I wonder what that HUGE vitola smokes like? I would have to think it can’t improve on this one, only make it worse.

8:50 PM
IamDarren: time to put it down just burnt my fingers and my lips on that last draw.

8:53 PM
StraightUpCigars: YEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS! Finally

8:53 PM
StraightUpCigars: I delivered a winner. I was on like a 20 cigar losing streak

8:54 PM
Terry1: Restored my faith in small boutiques.

8:56 PM
IamDarren: agreed, i love it when a small botique comes through. i hope they can get thier name out.
