EPC Short Run Cubra – Cigar Review

This week’s group cigar review is of the Ernesto Perez Carrillo ( EPC ) Short Run Cubra.  After using a cutter the cigar has a nice draw and a nice looking wrapper leaf.  After lighting up we tasted sweet creamy smoke with coffee and pepper.  It tasted really good and was easy to smoke – great flavor.  A couple of the cigars had construction issues.  Surprisingly, this one packs a punch, it has a high nicotine content so watch out.  Overall, we really enjoyed this one – the flavor is exceptional and because of that we were able to look past some construction problems.    We recommend it!

7:36 PM
Terry1: Looks like a well made cigar. Perfect draw. Getting some cedar notes on the cold draw.
7:36 PM
IamDarren: Getting a generic tobacco smell from the wrapper. Hard to describe the smell on the foot. Sort of a sweet hay with a hint of pepper maybe. One small hole in the wrapper about halfway up but the wrapper looks nice otherwise.
7:37 PM
StraightUpCigars: Perfect draw and a sweet chocolate taste on the cold draw.
7:37 PM
StraightUpCigars: Let’s lighterup!
7:39 PM
IamDarren: EPC band slid off with the cello. After the cut the draw is a bit tight. Lighting up.
7:40 PM
IamDarren: yep, there’s that black pepper note
7:40 PM
Terry1: My band isn’t budging. Maybe glued to the wrapper. We shall find out later.
7:42 PM
StraightUpCigars: Nice start. A little sweet and creamy, a little pepper. Well balanced.
7:42 PM
Terry1: Lot’s of smoke in the first few puffs. I’m getting the pepper, some sweetness, cedar and coffee. Nice start.
7:43 PM
IamDarren: getting mostly pepper on my stick that transitions to a semi-sweet coffee.
7:47 PM
StraightUpCigars: Burn is getting a hair uneven already, may have to fix it.
7:48 PM
IamDarren: the first couple inches near the head had a noticeable tighter pack so I worked on it and was able to improve the draw. Now I am getting more of the sweet cedar note up front. Pepper is still present but not dominating.
7:48 PM
Terry1: It looks like this is a CI exclusive release. I’m a little suspicious with the CI description. They claim only 1,200 boxes of 10 were made and they’re $35/box and they’re still in stock after a year?
7:51 PM
Terry1: An inch in not much has changed. Getting a medium pepper, a honey like sweetness and the cedar. Burn and draw is spot on for me.
7:52 PM
IamDarren: well Cigar.com is sold out and the box price was 7 bucks a stick. I think maybe they weren’t selling as well as they had hoped so they had a fire sale. I got them for 3 bucks a stick.
7:52 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, that’s awfully suspicious.
7:54 PM
IamDarren: supposedly Cubra is the name of the hybrid habano leaf in the wrapper
7:54 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is taking on a more chocolatey sweetness. Some coffee too. Pretty good right now, but I had to correct a terrible burn.
7:56 PM
IamDarren: agree, flavor has improved a lot on mine. Getting a mix of hay and pepper at the first that immediately fades to coffee. Funny though, the finish almost tastes like mocha between puffs. Very interesting flavor profile.
7:56 PM
Terry1: What has me puzzled is this is a decent cigar so far. With the EPC brand name and the flavors I’m getting I would have expected this to be sold out quickly. Oh well. If the EPC Cubra continues this way I’ll be looking for a box.
7:58 PM
StraightUpCigars: My burn is already getting bad again. I got the bum stick this time.
7:59 PM
StraightUpCigars: I did remove both bands without issue though.
7:59 PM
Terry1: There’s a lot going on in the flavors for me as well. I’m liking the sweetness that’s coming through, hard for me to pinpoint what it is. Pepper is well balanced. It’s there but not overwhelming the other notes. I’m liking it.
8:01 PM
IamDarren: Nearing the second third, I think the pepper has faded enough that its coming across with the sweetness more as a strong cinnamon spice note. I really liking where this one is headed.
8:02 PM
IamDarren: burn has been perfect, just tapped off the second ash.
8:08 PM
StraightUpCigars: Great flavors on mine. I’d trade you for the better burn
8:09 PM
Terry1: Middle third is hitting my palate just right. I’m just sitting here enjoying this cigar. Burn is good on mine. Just knocked of the second ash in a solid chunk.
8:11 PM
IamDarren: just crossing the halfway mark. Starting to pick up a hint of charred oak right after the cinnamon spice. Seems to have a somewhat unique flavor profile but its mixing well. Im really enjoying this second third so far.
8:11 PM
IamDarren: and pairing really well with my Crown Black and Pepsi
8:12 PM
StraightUpCigars: Good description, I think mine is a mix of charred oak flavor and coffee.
8:14 PM
Terry1: I’m not getting the charred oak. I’m tasting a creamy mocha coffee with a touch of pepper.
8:19 PM
StraightUpCigars: The flavor is really exceptional on these.
8:21 PM
StraightUpCigars: Are you sure these are still available? I only see the ’13 core on CI.
8:21 PM
Terry1: Getting into the last third. Luckily the band popped off. No damage. I’m starting to feel it a little now.
8:22 PM
IamDarren: it shows to be out of stock on CI as well: http://www.cigarsinternational.com/cigars/72075/e-p-carrillo-short-run-cubra/

8:22 PM
IamDarren: when I found them they were in the clearance section
8:23 PM
StraightUpCigars: Huh. Maybe these are from ’12 and they called the ’13 the core.
8:23 PM
Terry1: I didn’t notice the out of stock earlier. Damn.
8:23 PM
Terry1: This would have been worth a box purchase.
8:24 PM
IamDarren: I got the 10 pack. I would be glad to send you each a couple in the next trade…. as long as someone picks up a few of the 2013 to try
8:26 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lol! There’s a business person for ya.
8:28 PM
IamDarren: lol, thanks Terry
8:30 PM
IamDarren: nearing the final third, pepper is making a small comeback. Starting to get a little more strength as well.
8:32 PM
Terry1: Yeah I’m buzzing right now. Great flavors. Burn is still good..
8:33 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, this one has some strength to it. Lots of smoke production. Other than the damn burn this is a winner. Way better than the EPC we had the other night!
8:34 PM
IamDarren: +1 to that
8:34 PM
Terry1: I second that. This maybe the best EPC I’ve smoked.
8:38 PM
IamDarren: Either of you a Mike Ditka fan:http://www.cigarsinternational.com/cigars/83717/camacho-ditka-signature/

StraightUpCigars: Lol! I only think of SNL when I think of Ditka.
8:39 PM
IamDarren: lol, yea me too
8:40 PM
IamDarren: I think Camacho better be careful, they are going to have as many blends as RP soon:http://www.cigarsinternational.com/cigars/83718/camacho-bg-meyer-standard-issue/

8:41 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lol! They have a ways to go yet, but it’s weird they only used to have a few blends.
8:42 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine’s actually coming to an end over here.
8:42 PM
Terry1: As long as they keep coming out with good cigars I don’t care whose name is on it.
8:43 PM
Terry1: I’m nearing the end mine as well. Hate to put it down. I am struggling with the strength.
8:43 PM
IamDarren: just remember that the ones I sent you guys were the original blends by Christian Eiroa. Now it is owned by Davidoff.
8:44 PM
IamDarren: only about a half inch left on mine. I can rate anytime.
8:44 PM
StraightUpCigars: It’s strange to have such a sweet and easy to smoke cigar be this high in strength.
8:47 PM
Terry1: I’m done. This cigar kicked my ass. Great flavors thou.
8:47 PM
StraightUpCigars: Agreed. All righty, rating now.
8:50 PM
IamDarren: the pack was uneven on mine until I got it worked out. Otherwise it would have been a 49 from me. Great stick.
8:50 PM
Terry1: Too bad it’s sold out. Solid stick with great flavors.
8:51 PM
StraightUpCigars: Amazing scores. Good sweet coffee and pepper flavors. Really good cigar!
8:51 PM
IamDarren: Looks like all the Short Run cigars have received good reviews. Can’t go wrong there. Looks like they are the best of the best, utilizing their finest tobacco.
