EP Carrillo La Historia – Cigar Review

La Historia Cigar 2
Up for review is the EP Carrillo (EPC) La Historia cigar.  This cigar was created to honor the members of the Perez-Carrillo family.  It’s a fine looking box-pressed cigar with chocolate notes on the cold draw.  Once lit up, we got a delicious mix of sweet chocolate flavor, earth, and some spice.  Eventually a real tasty coffee flavor took over.  Construction was solid throughout.  It’s worth noting that this cigar was very low strength, which surprised us.  Overall, we really enjoyed the flavor of this stick.  It is a bit pricey, but we think it’s worth the splurge!

La Historia Cigar 3
7:40 PM
IamDarren: all set up. Looks like a well aged maduro, very mottled and leathery. It has a slight box press and seems packed well.
7:41 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: This is one fine looking stick. Has a chocolate smell to the wrapper.
7:41 PM
IamDarren: Earthy aroma on the wrapper. Cold draw reveals some nice chocolate notes. Nice draw.
7:43 PM
IamDarren: Whats the story on this stick? Same guy that makes the EPC cigars, right?
7:43 PM
Terry1: Lots of bling on the label. Draw is good on mine. I agree with the chocolate and barnyard notes.
7:44 PM
Terry1: Yep same guy. I’d have to research the story on the cigar. Ready to light up.
7:45 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Lighting!
7:45 PM
IamDarren: yep, I’m lighting up
7:46 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: This is the same company, I thought. Just some new branding.
7:48 PM
IamDarren: Looks like it was made as a tribute to his family. It has a San Andres wrapper.
7:49 PM
IamDarren: So far mine is sweet and creamy. Hint of chocolate but very light on the palate.
7:50 PM
Terry1: Boy those chocolate notes on the cold draw really shine on the initial puffs. There is also some earth, spice and maybe a fruity sweetness in the background. Really good.
7:50 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Same here, lots of chocolate and earth to start with a hint of spice.
7:51 PM
IamDarren: Hint of spice in the sinus. Earthy up front but very creamy, almost nutty. Then the sweetness overtakes the other flavor with a hint of chocolate on the finish. Nice balanced smoke so far.
7:52 PM
IamDarren: easy draw, great smoke production.
7:55 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I really can’t get enough of that flavor, will have to slow down
7:55 PM
IamDarren: Ash is a little loose though, dropping off every half inch.
7:56 PM
IamDarren: I was doing it too then i noticed the cigar heating up a bit and started getting more of a bitter coffee note. Slowing down really helped.
7:56 PM
Terry1: I agree, loving the play between those flavors.
8:00 PM
IamDarren: Nice relaxing cigar. Great flavor with a medium body.
8:01 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: So far so good. Ash is holding on mine and the draw if perfect.
8:06 PM
Terry1: Got a touch of that coffee note. Smoking slower really does help. The sweetness mixes well with the earthy note. The spice has moved from the sinus to more of a feeling of heat in the back of the throat. Burn is a little off. I’m just sitting back and enjoying. Which is what a cigar is supposed to do.
8:06 PM
IamDarren: In the second third now. Little bit more spice now but otherwise the same. Great flavor. Great construction.
8:07 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I’m getting little white pepper heat. I like it.
8:09 PM
IamDarren: wish it wasn’t so hot and muggy outside. No breeze. Summer is here i guess.
8:10 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Yeah, it’s nasty out. I have a fan on me which makes it tolerable.
8:11 PM
IamDarren: And these little gnats that keep buzzing by my ear..
8:11 PM
IamDarren: cigar smoke doesn’t seem to phase them
8:12 PM
Terry1: It’s perfect here! 75, no wind, low humidity. It’s not going to last. Supposed to be over 90 this weekend.
8:12 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Man, that’s perfect weather!
8:12 PM
IamDarren: starting to get a little of that pepper you mentioned
8:14 PM
Terry1: I had a minor void next to the wrapper and it burned about a half inch up the wrapper. Looks like the cigar is trying to self correct.
8:16 PM
IamDarren: mine is burning great, nice and slow.
8:19 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Yeah, I’ve slowed it down a lot and it’s really performing right now. This was a good choice!
8:21 PM
Terry1: Looks like that void goes a little farther than I thought. It ran up one side another qtr inch. I decided to correct the other side to catch it up. No real change in the flavors. Still tasting really nice.
8:22 PM
IamDarren: that’s a shame, at least the flavor is holding up
8:31 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Really liking this cigar. It’s gone full bodied on me and packing a ton of coffee flavor.
8:32 PM
IamDarren: same here. Into the last third and its more full bodied. Still has a great balance of flavor. A bit more coffee, especially on the finish.
8:33 PM
Terry1: Looks like I burned past the void. It’s burning fine now. I like a cigar that you can set down for a minute and it fires right up again on the first puff. I had a cigar recently that you had to continually puff on or it would go out. Pain in the ass.
8:34 PM
IamDarren: completely agree, if i have to work to keep it going it doesn’t matter how good the flavor is i want to put it down and grab something else.
8:35 PM
Terry1: That coffee note is coming through on mine too. Goes well with the sweetness that is still there.
8:35 PM
IamDarren: That’s one of the reasons i like to keep stocked up on the Diesel Unlimited. I can take those out building fence, set it on the tailgate for five min. while i set a post and come back and its like i never put it down.
8:37 PM
IamDarren: about an inch left to smoke. A little bit more heat but still great flavor. This one has performed flawlessly.
8:37 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: The diesel line is the best, it’s a shame everyone else figured that out and they’re getting more expensive!
8:38 PM
IamDarren: no doubt. Glad i picked up that box of Omar Ortez. Smoked my first one right off the truck and it performed very well.
8:42 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I’m nubbing this thing. It’s delicious!
8:44 PM
IamDarren: same here, quite good
8:44 PM
Terry1: Yeah this is a finger burner. Flavors have been consistent and great. I like many of EPCs blends but I love this one. Didn’t get that nicotine buzz I usually get from EPC.
8:45 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Me neither, this one was very weak nic-wise
8:45 PM
Terry1: These are about $7-8 bucks but you can find them for a bit less.
8:46 PM
IamDarren: For this quality of a cigar i would say that is a fair price.
8:46 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I think that sounds about right. This one is a bit more of a special occasion cigar IMO
8:47 PM
IamDarren: True, but definitely box worthy.
8:47 PM
Terry1: This would be a good choice for a special occasion. Great flavors for a good hour. Easy cigar to smoke and enjoy.
8:48 PM
IamDarren: I’m ready to rate, starting to burn my fingers.
8:48 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I just set mine down too. Rating coming
8:48 PM
Terry1: Regretfully I’m setting mine done too.
8:51 PM
IamDarren: Great cigar, thanks for sending them out for review
8:51 PM
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Real good scores. Super good flavor and easy to smoke. Thanks Terry!
8:52 PM
Terry1: Really enjoyed this cigar. I might have to buy a box soon. Great flavors. Mine had a minor construction issue. Easy to recommend. Glad everyone like it!
