Dunhill 1907 – Cigar Review

This week’s group cigar review is of the Dunhill 1907.  This nice looking cigar feels heavy in the hand, it’s tightly packed.  The draw errs on the tight side after using a cutter.  Once lit up, we got a taste of leather, cedar, and nuts with sweetness.  It’s a balancing act of savory and sweet flavor.  Towards the end of the cigars the sweetness transitions into a cinnamon spice.  Overall, the Dunhill 1907 cigar had good construction and delicious mild/medium bodied flavor.  We enjoyed it and think this premium stick is worth the price.

7:27 PM
StraightUpCigars: This Dunhill 1907 is a brick, heavy and well-packed. Draw is a bit tight, but it’s got a nice mild cedar smell to the wrapper.
7:31 PM
IamDarren: Nice looking wrapper, good sheen. Rolled very well. Infact my band slid off with the cello. Draw is a bit tight.
7:32 PM
IamDarren: getting a very mild cedar and some sweetness on the cold draw
7:32 PM
Terry1: Looks like a well made cigar. My draw is on the tight side as well. A mild sweetness on the cold draw. Ready to light.
7:33 PM
IamDarren: lighting up
7:33 PM
StraightUpCigars: Me too.
7:35 PM
IamDarren: wow, quite a bit more flavor than expected from the cold draw. Getting a mix of leather and cedar up front that immediately picks up a creamy… sort of molasses type sweetness. Unique but tasty.
7:35 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mild but delicious start. Cedary and creamy – fairly sweet.
7:36 PM
Terry1: I’m getting a mix of sweet and savory notes. Nice start.
7:38 PM
IamDarren: so whats the story on this blend?
7:39 PM
StraightUpCigars: No idea. I’ll have to look it up. This one was sent to us for review.
7:40 PM
IamDarren: starting to get a little pepper on the finish that is bringing down the creaminess a little and giving it more of a dry finish.
7:40 PM
IamDarren: burn is razor sharp and although the draw is still pretty tight there is a good amount of smoke production.
7:42 PM
StraightUpCigars: Same here, nice burn and enough smoke despite the tight draw.
7:42 PM
Terry1: I’m noticing how short the finish is. Flavors are gone quickly after exhaling. Smoke is creamy, mild and slightly sweet, little to no spice for me yet. I’m liking it so far but I’m hoping for more.
7:44 PM
StraightUpCigars: I agree Terry.
7:44 PM
StraightUpCigars: This is their flagship line:
7:44 PM
StraightUpCigars: Each medium-bodied handmade includes a fine blend of Dominican ligero and Brazilian Mata Fina filler, all encased in a Dominican binder and a smooth, blemish-free Honduran wrapper. Here’s your chance to experience a true legend for yourself.
7:45 PM
IamDarren: geez, this has a little of everything from every place
7:46 PM
IamDarren: no complaints here, as long as I smoke slow I get plenty of sweetness to mix with the leathery base. Nice straight forward mild to medium bodied stick so far.
7:48 PM
StraightUpCigars: Im curious about the strength sincen there’s some ligero.
7:48 PM
StraightUpCigars: My first ash already dropped.
7:49 PM
IamDarren: yeah, mine just tapped off easily at the 1 inch mark
7:50 PM
IamDarren: getting more pepper in the sinus now, bringing up the strength a bit. I bet it gets stronger the further we get in.
7:50 PM
Terry1: I’m thinking about the strength too. I am surprised it has any ligero. Very mild so far.
7:52 PM
Terry1: There is an unusual but pleasant flavor in the background. I can’t put a name to it yet. I’m wondering if it’s coming from the Brazilian filler. I’ve not had Brazilian tobaccos very often.
7:53 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’m digging the flavor, gettingn some pepper now.
7:56 PM
Terry1: Price on these are nice, about $5-$6. Burn has been perfect. Draw still doing well.
7:57 PM
IamDarren: construction and burn seem to be spot on and flavor is good. I agree there is a hint of something in the mix that sets this one apart slightly. However, im not a big fan of mixing a ton of different tobaccos together most of the time. Many of the subtle flavors get drowned out.
7:59 PM
StraightUpCigars: Normally I agree Darren, but this blend works.
8:03 PM
Terry1: That unusual note is some kind of savory spice. Mixing nicely with the sweetness. I’m just starting to get a bit of pepper at the halfway point. Flavors are mild but seem to be building.
8:04 PM
StraightUpCigars: Savory spice, that’s a good description. I’m tasting that too.
8:06 PM
IamDarren: agree with the sweet spice, its unique. And yes I am liking the flavor combo a lot at this point.
8:06 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’m having a hard time letting it rest. The tight draw leaves me wanting more, I just keep puffing.
8:07 PM
IamDarren: lol, where are you at? I just crossed the halfway mark.
8:08 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’m at about the same point, haven’t taken the band off yet.
8:09 PM
Terry1: I’m taking a lot of puffs too. I’d like a more open draw. It’s pretty thick right now.
8:10 PM
Terry1: My band slid off the end.
8:11 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine did too. Draw is the only thing I can complain about at this point.
8:13 PM
Terry1: I’ve been trying to massage any knots out but I’m not finding any. I think it’s just stuffed with leaves.
8:13 PM
StraightUpCigars: I think so too. You can feel how heavy it is compared to others.
8:14 PM
IamDarren: as long as I keep getting plenty of smoke I don’t mind it so much
8:19 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mostly the same on the flavors, getting a little richer and medium bodied now though.
8:19 PM
IamDarren: approaching the last third. Sweetness is dropping off and being replaced by something acidic.
8:22 PM
StraightUpCigars: I haven’t gotten any acidity yet, even with my speed puffing.
8:25 PM
IamDarren: sweetness is really fading out now, pretty much just getting a toasty, leathery flavor now with some spice on the finish.
8:25 PM
Terry1: I did an experiment in this last third and used a small drill bit. I managed to snag a leaf and pulled it out. Draw is better and flavors are a little fuller. I think they have to many leaves in this cigar. My only complaint.
8:26 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is holding onto some sweetness, but it really is fading.
8:26 PM
StraightUpCigars: You’re a cigar McGyver, Terry
8:27 PM
Terry1: Lol. It worked this time but I’ve ruined cigars doing that.
8:29 PM
IamDarren: I tried working the last inch of mine and it opened the draw a little. Also helped with the acidity. Still not much sweetness.
8:30 PM
StraightUpCigars: Well then I’m going to try that.
8:31 PM
StraightUpCigars: I think my sweetness has turned into more of a cinnamon spice at this point.
8:33 PM
Terry1: I agree with you Matt. I’m getting a bit of a bite on the tongue like cinnamon.
8:35 PM
StraightUpCigars: It’s supposed to be warmer here next week, hope they’re right!
8:36 PM
IamDarren: same here, in the 50s for several days WOOHOO!
8:39 PM
StraightUpCigars: This one has some strength, I can feel it at this point.
8:40 PM
IamDarren: last inch and mine has gotten a lot stronger, decent flavor, just wish the sweetness hadn’t completely faded out
8:40 PM
Terry1: Yeah there’s some ligero in this. I still get a little sweetness on mine.
8:43 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine’s almost tapped out. Did I win the race?
8:43 PM
IamDarren: yep, but im close behind
8:44 PM
Terry1: I’m about done too.
8:46 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’m gonna rate ‘er so I can warm up!
8:46 PM
IamDarren: sounds good
8:50 PM
StraightUpCigars: I gotta be honest, I’m shocked how good this one was. They didn’t really go out on a limb with the flavors, but for a mild/medium cigar it was delicious the whole way. Priced fair for a big box store stick.
8:50 PM
Terry1: I knocked a point off construction for the draw. I smoke a lot of milder cigars and my challenge is finding milder cigars with flavors I like. Not a fan of the shade wrappers usually used for mild cigars. I think the Dunhill 1907 fits that criteria. I’m intrigued enough with the unique flavors to try it again. I’d recommend trying it. Good cigar.
8:52 PM
StraightUpCigars: If I found myself trapped in a B&M picking out a cigar, this would give Oliva a run for its money.
8:52 PM
IamDarren: It definitely kept me interested. I don’t know if the flavor combo was exactly what I look for but its just one biased opinion. If the unique sweet spice lasted until the end I would have given it a few more points.
8:53 PM
Terry1: I’m glad we were able to try this cigar. It’s the first Dunhill I’ve tried. Except for the tight draw this was a positive experience for me.
