Up for review is the Drew Estate Undercrown Shade – the latest in this highly regarded line of cigars. It has an excellent looking light wrapper leaf. The draw is good after a shallow cut. Once lit up, it starts off with a sweet cedar flavor and plenty of pepper. Rich and buttery smoke took over midway with a bold coffee flavor. Overall, we loved the flavors and the construction was reliable. It’s a good smoke and worth splurging on. Give it a try!

StraightUpCigars – Matt: My Undercrown Shade has an exquisite looking wrapper, but a very loose draw after cutting. Wrapper leaf smells like cedar.
Terry1: Agree, this is one of the better looking wrappers I’ve seen lately. Cold draw is okay for me. I did a shallow cut on the head. Cedar and dark chocolate notes on the cold draw. Ready to light up.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Me too, lighting.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I am getting a very robust charred cedar flavor with some white pepper in there.
Terry1: Lot’s of pepper in the sinus on the first few puffs. There is a slight sweetness in the background and a woody note like you mentioned. The initial notes are bold. Woke up my senses.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Definitely bold. It’s a very buttery smoke that coats your palate.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Luckily the draw on mine is firming up as we smoke.
Terry1: Mine is drawing great. Pepper seems to be subsiding a bit. Getting some more sweetness and maybe a grassy note from the wrapper.
Terry1: Looking where I cut the head it’s interesting how dark the fillers are compared to the light wrapper.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Here’s what I found, Criollo and Corojo fillers. http://drewestate.com/?portfolio=undercrown-shade

Undercrown Shade – Drew Estate
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Mine is ramping up with a dark coffee flavor now, getting close to full bodied.
Terry1: I was thinking they used the same blend with a Connecticut wrapper but it appears this cigar has little in common with the Undercrown.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Yeah, this is a completely different blend according to the description.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I am smoking a robusto size, while you guys got Toro (or Torpedo?)… so smoke fast
Terry1: Lol. You gave me the wrong one. I smoke slower than both of you.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Yeah, I guess I didn’t think that one through
Terry1: I’m getting some of the coffee notes you mentioned. The sweetness has a hint of vanilla. Pepper has mellowed to the background. I’m really enjoying this cigar at the moment.
Terry1: I’ll add that this cigar is smoking really well. Burn line is straight. Seems like we’ve had several cigars recently where you had to puff several times to get the smoke going. The Undercrown Shade gives a satisfying mouthful of smoke right away.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Mine is good too, straight burn.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Mine just keeps getting richer and bolder, it’s a beast right now. Lips are tingling with the pepper.
Terry1: Rich is a good description. Like you said the smoke is creamy and really coats the palate.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: So much flavor with each puff, it’s just an overload. Real good.
Terry1: Getting a little buzz towards the end of the middle third.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Me too, it’s got some hidden strength to it.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: These cigars are expensive, but I definitely understand why there’s so much hype around them, they’re good.
Terry1: I agree. Band came off easily. No real changes in flavors. Still giving rich strong flavors. I’m liking this over the original Undercrown so far.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I do too, this is a real gem. Unfortunately mine is about dead.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: I do actually have a minor complaint, the robusto I had was a large RG which made it a little awkward to puff. I’d prefer it in a torpedo.
Terry1: I can rate anytime you’re ready. I’ve got over an inch left but I’m not expecting any other changes.
StraightUpCigars – Matt: Really not much to take points off on. A hair pricey and not major flavor transitions, but overall this was a delicious and enjoyable cigar that’s worth checking out.
Terry1: I agree it was a great cigar. Smoked well. Loved the flavors after that initial pepper blast. I can recommend trying it. I enjoyed it.
