Diamond Crown – Cigar Review

Today we’re reviewing the The Diamond Crown cigar by Stanford Newman.  This is a pricey stick starting at $15 each online, so we’ve got high expectations.  It has a light brown wrapper and the construction seems good.  There is a grass/hay note typical of Connecticut shade wrappers.  After lighting up the cigar has a sweet grassy flavor with some spice.  It tastes good.  Later on that sweet flavor gives way to a strong pepper as the cigar transitions.  Overall, it’s a tasty smoke and the construction is perfect all the way through.  It’s spendy, so it lost a couple of points on value.  Definitely worth a try, though!

7:57 PM
IamDarren: Light brown wrapper. Construction looks good, no soft spots or imperfections in the wrapper. Getting a sweet grass or hay note from the wrapper.
7:57 PM
IamDarren: Band was very loose. Slid right off.
7:59 PM
IamDarren: Barely removed the cap. Medium draw. Same grassy hay note on the cold draw.
8:00 PM
Terry1: Typical grass/hay notes you get from a Connecticut shade. Draw is about right. Looks well constructed. My band feels like it’s stuck to the wrapper so I’ll wait and see if it loosens up with some heat.
8:00 PM
IamDarren: Ok. Guess we are both ready. Lets get started! Bring on the flame.
8:00 PM
Terry1: Lighting up!
8:03 PM
IamDarren: Lit easily. Starting with a nice buttery character. Little earth and spice up front. Not much on the finish. Slightly bitter hay note.
8:05 PM
Terry1: Plenty of creamy smoke. I’m getting a mildly sweet hay note up front and a mild pepper. Cigar is smoking well.
8:05 PM
IamDarren: Agreed, mine is burning well and producing plenty of smoke.
8:07 PM
IamDarren: Pairing it with Double Oaked Woodford Reserve and pepsi. My new favorite whiskey.
8:08 PM
Terry1: Oh man! I picked up a bottle of that in Vegas. I haven’t opened it yet. I’ll have to give it a try this week.
8:08 PM
IamDarren: Cigar has picked up a little more sweetness and lost the bitterness on the finish. Very mild but enjoyable right now.
8:09 PM
IamDarren: I got a second bottle. Its REALLY good. Like comparing Gentlemen Jack to Jack Daniels if you have had those. Much more refined and smooth. Great sipping whiskey.
8:11 PM
IamDarren: just tapped off the first ash, near perfect burn.
8:11 PM
Terry1: I’ve had both and yes I like Gentlemen Jack better. I’m a fan of Woodford Reserve and had to try the Double Oaked version. Now you’ve got me excited to open the bottle.
8:12 PM
IamDarren: At first I thought it would be stronger with more char since they use a second oak barrel to finish it but its almost like they distilled it a second time. I love it. Glad you have some to try!
8:13 PM
IamDarren: And the new bottle is sexy. Good one to showcase in the cabinet.
8:14 PM
Terry1: Even burn at an inch in. I’m liking the sweet spicy notes. There is a mild grassy bitterness on the finish.
8:15 PM
Terry1: The bottle is what caught my eye. I’m sipping Four Roses Small Batch tonight. Another favorite of mine.
8:16 PM
IamDarren: This is actually starting off to be one of the best Connies I have had. I can’t get over the strong bitter finish of most of them. the bitterness is almost gone on mine. Sweet, spice, and hay is all I’m getting at the moment.
8:18 PM
IamDarren: just about to cross into the second third
8:19 PM
Terry1: I like this cigar. It’s one I smoke often. Price is the only thing stopping me from smoking them on a regular basis. Never had one with any construction issues.
8:19 PM
IamDarren: Diamond Crown has a good track record. Several good reviews.
8:23 PM
IamDarren: but you are right. I put these in the same category as Padron. Yes, I know they are a great cigar but I’m a cheap ass and will probably never buy them.
8:24 PM
IamDarren: almost to the halfway mark. Same great flavor. Burn is getting a little wonky but still manageable.
8:25 PM
Terry1: Lol. Yeah I have a difficult time buying cigars over that $10 mark. Got the band off without tearing the wrapper. It was stuck a little bit.
8:26 PM
IamDarren: Sometimes I wonder if it is actually harder to blend a good connie or Cameroon. They can’t rely as much on the flavor from the wrapper to shine through. Probably a lot less options on what filler they can use.
8:28 PM
IamDarren: Looks like they have a nice sampler. Might have to give it a shot if the price doesn’t get too much higher: http://www.cigarbid.com/auction/lot/2559773/diamond-crown-family-toro-collection-4-cigars/

8:29 PM
Terry1: The draw on mine is beginning to tighten up. Still getting plenty of smoke. Flavors are about the same. I’m real curious about the maduro Diamond Crown.
8:29 PM
Terry1: That sampler would be a good way to try them all.
8:30 PM
IamDarren: That’s what I was thinking. If I’m going to fork over that much money for a fiver or a box I would want to try one first.
8:31 PM
IamDarren: Mine is starting to pick up a bit of strength. Maybe more in the medium range now. More spice, especially on the finish.
8:31 PM
IamDarren: heading into the last third.
8:33 PM
IamDarren: ash is holding firm, just tapped off the third ash in the tray.
8:33 PM
Terry1: Mine has lost the bitterness. Still has a grassy note but it’s sweeter now. I’m liking the spice on the retrohale.
8:34 PM
Terry1: So are you getting caught up with the farm? Seems like spring is your busiest time.
8:34 PM
IamDarren: just in a holding pattern right now until it dries out a bit. Got a few more fields to plant as soon as we can get in the field.
8:35 PM
IamDarren: How is business going for you? Staying busy?
8:38 PM
Terry1: I’ve been busy, just not with clients. We had a complete change over of our technology so I’m trying to learn three new programs. I’m almost done and will get to seeing clients next week. I’m getting too old to have to relearn my job.
8:40 PM
Terry1: I will say the tech is awesome and should be popular with our clients.
8:40 PM
IamDarren: lol. I know what you mean. Seems like it never ends. We are always trying new things. Must keep up with the times.
8:42 PM
IamDarren: Mine is getting stronger in the last third. More spice and a little pepper.
8:43 PM
Terry1: Same here. I’ve been noticing the sweetness fading and the build up of more pepper. Burn is still about perfect. Good smoke.
8:46 PM
IamDarren: Agreed, glad it has had some flavor transitions. Still no bitterness. Liking it.
8:48 PM
Terry1: I’m getting close to done. The cigar is heating up.
8:49 PM
IamDarren: same here. Plus its getting cold and windy here. Supposed to get more rain tonight. Might have to end it a bit early. Less than an inch left and mine is also heating up.
8:49 PM
Terry1: Alright lets rate it then.
8:51 PM
IamDarren: Have to say. Probably the best flavored Connie I have had. Just wish the price wasn’t so steep.
8:51 PM
Terry1: Good cigar. Easy to smoke. Liked the flavors. Price is the only factor that would keep me from buying a box but I do buy fivers from time to time. I’d recommend this one if you are looking for a flavorful milder cigar.
8:52 PM
IamDarren: Yeah, a good one to recommend for just about anyone to try. Thanks for picking it.
