Cu-Avana Natural – Cigar Review

Cu-Avana Natural
By: Manuel Quesada
Size: Robusto, 5” x 50
Before the Punisher and before the Intenso there was the Cu-Avana Natural. Blended by Manuel Quesada, the Cu-Avana Natural, along with the Maduro version, was blended to be a flavorful mild cigar that would appeal to a lot of smokers. The cigar has a slightly oily Connecticut shade wrapper with a few veins. The binder and long fillers are from the Dominican Republic.
The cigar looks and feels like it is well rolled. Clipping the cap I get a very smooth draw with notes of sweet hay, green tea and dry tobacco. Kind of what I expected from a milder, shade wrapped cigar.
First Third: Starting off, the cigar produces lots of creamy smoke that coats the palate. I’m getting the sweet hay from the cold draw and some grassy notes. There’s a woody note in the background that’s keeping my interest. The finish starts off with a little sweetness then turns a bit sour that lingers on the tongue making me want to drink the water I brought along.
Second third: Burn has been near perfect and the ash is solid. The flavor has moved away from the sweet hay to more of a woody note. In the background I’m picking up roasted nuts. The retrohale is smooth and mild, no eye watering pepper here. I’m still getting that sourness on the finish, somewhat like lemons. The room aroma is pleasantly light, sweet and woody.
Last third: The Cu-Avana Natural is certainly consistent. The cigar ended the way it started, smooth and mild with lots of creamy smoke. The flavors of wood, nuts and hay were simple but pleasant.
Final thoughts: This is a well made cigar for being so budget friendly. With decent medium bodied flavors, good construction, even burn and mild in strength, the Cu-Avana Natural hits its intended target. If you’re new to cigars or looking for an easy going cigar to take on the golf course I could recommend trying the Cu-Avana Natural. Just be sure you have plenty of water or beer with you, the sourness on the finish will keep you parched.
