This week’s group cigar review is of the Cohiba Nicaragua. This cigar has a rich barnyard smell to the wrapper and a mottled wrapper with character. Once lit up, we tasted an earthy and sweet flavor with lots of peppery spice to balance it out. Later on, coffee was the main flavor that we tasted. This cigar was VERY strong (typical of Nicaraguan tobacco), so be ready for it. The wouldn’t hold on for more than a half an inch either, so don’t let it drop in your lap! Overall, we loved the flavor and the strength made it fun to smoke. We recommend this one over the other Cohiba offerings.

StraightUpCigars: A shallow cut was enough for a good draw on this one. I’m getting a rich meaty flavor on the cold draw. Nice dark wrapper leaf.
Terry1: Just to make sure we are smoking the same cigar. The Cohiba I have has a black label and has Nicaragua written on it.
StraightUpCigars: Yep, that’s the one.
StraightUpCigars: This is called the Cohiba Nicaragua, not the Cohiba black like I said earlier.
Terry1: That’s what I thought. Nice draw. Getting the typical barnyard notes from it. A little spice. I’d say the wrapper has character, bumps and veins. Ready to light.
StraightUpCigars: Me too, lighting.
StraightUpCigars: Really dark/rich earthy start. A tangy sweetness in there too, with a little spice.
Terry1: Really good start! Earthy, caramel sweetness, a big blast of pepper in the sinus. Lots going on in the first few puffs. Looking forward to the Cohiba Nicaragua.
StraightUpCigars: The pepper has roared in since I posted, nice white pepper flavor that adds a lot to the flavors.
Terry1: Seems like the sweetness is building on mine. Pepper is strong, makes my nose tingle. I’d like to see a little less pepper. I’m getting hints of some other notes but the pepper right now is overwhelming them.
StraightUpCigars: It is really good, and lots going on, you’re right. Also tasting a hazelnut flavor.
Terry1: I usually wait until towards the end to look up the price but I’m enjoying this enough to consider buying more. This one’s up there in the ten dollar range. It’s started well. Hopefully it will finish like a ten dollar cigar.
StraightUpCigars: Yep, these are very costly. Luckily they were gifted to us for review.
Terry1: Burn is good not perfect. Lots of smoke. Either my nose has gone numb or the pepper is not as strong. End of the first third. I’m getting some leather now and a nice sweetness.
StraightUpCigars: My ash has dropped twice, in little pieces. My only complaint so far.
StraightUpCigars: So far I’d have to say that this cigar is far and away better than the Cohiba Red Dots that I smoked.
Terry1: I’ll agree to that. This one is much better. My ash has been good. Dropped once in a solid chunk.
Terry1: And a sliver of an ash falls into my lap. Great.
StraightUpCigars: Damn! Ash is dangerous on this one.
Terry1: Loving the sweetness I’m getting now. Starting to feel a little nic kick.
StraightUpCigars: I am just now starting to feel it too, got up to let the dog inside and it kicked in.
StraightUpCigars: Mine has more of a rich coffee flavor with slight sweetness. Still some pepper, but it’s faded. Nice spice to balance it out. Really good right now.
Terry1: Band was slightly glued to the wrapper. Caused a small tear removing it. I must have been lucky on that first ash. It’s dropping in little chunks now.
StraightUpCigars: Mine came off without damage, but was heavily glued.
Terry1: Whew! I’m really feeling the strength now. Getting dizzy. I’m loving the flavors but the strength may do me in.
StraightUpCigars: I hear ya. Mine is building in body. I’d call it full bodied at this point. Lots of flavor and lots of strength.
StraightUpCigars: Let mine rest for a minute and it lost a lot of that body and had a toasted wood flavor. I think this one is really what you make of it – full bodied if you can’t resist puffing on it like me.
Terry1: I’m with you. I’m powering through the strength. The flavors are very enjoyable. I would expect this Cohiba to age well.
StraightUpCigars: I think you’re right. Although it doesn’t need it, a little age would make it even better. Not often we find an expensive stick that’s worth the price tag.
Terry1: I’m about done. Got to the nub because of the flavors. It’ll be awhile before my head stops spinning. Loved the flavors. Great cigar even though it’s stronger than what I normally smoke.
StraightUpCigars: I don’t have much left and I’m spinning too. Didn’t expect that strong a cigar from a “big box store” brand.
StraightUpCigars: Great flavor, good construction other than the ash, points off for price – still got an 8 b/c it’s worth it. Real happy with that smoke.
Terry1: Great cigar. Best Cohiba I’ve had. Darren missed a good one. Not sure I would buy a box because of price and strength but it’s one I’d try again.
StraightUpCigars: Didn’t know what to expect, that was a surprise. Glad we had that one tonight. Hopefully get the gang together for next week.
