Casa Magna Dominican Licey – Cigar Review

This week’s group cigar review is of the Casa Magna Dominican Licey.  This is the 3rd installment in the highly regarded Casa Magna line.  It has a rustic looking wrapper leaf and a sweet tobacco smell.  Once lit up it The Dominican Licey has a slightly bitter nutty and cedary flavor with a sweet buttery finish.  Two of the 3 cigars had perfect construction and poured out smoke.  Later in the cigar a bitter coffee flavor was perfectly balanced with the sweetness as the cigar increased in body.  Overall, this was a perfectly blended and balanced cigar with lots of complexity!  The construction was good and the price is fair.  We recommend this one.

7:40 PM
IamDarren: good firm construction, nice rustic looking wrapper with a few dark spots.
7:42 PM
IamDarren: went ahead and clipped it, perfect draw and some very nice spice and hazelnut flavor on the cold draw.
7:44 PM
StraightUpCigars: Nice sweet smell to the wrapper and a great draw after cutting. It does have a real rough looking wrapper leaf with lots of little bumps.
7:47 PM
Terry1: I’d agree with the rustic wrapper. Mine has a perfect draw. The wrapper looks like it has a small tear in the first third. Hopefully it doesn’t unravel.
7:47 PM
IamDarren: Dominican cigars have kinda fallen off the charts lately. I hope Casa Magna found some good tobacco to put in this sucker.
7:48 PM
StraightUpCigars: Agreed. Lighting up!
7:48 PM
IamDarren: Im ready to light up
7:49 PM
Terry1: The cold draw does have a faint hazelnut now that you mention it. I’ve been smoking some large rings lately. At 46 this cigar feels almost too small. Funny how you can get used to different sizes.
7:50 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’ve been drawn to the smaller RG cigars lately, that’s what I focused on for this batch of review cigars.
7:51 PM
IamDarren: lit easily and is producing tons of smoke. Nice mix of charred wood and a buttery flavor. A hint of spice and still getting a slightly nutty flavor on the finish. Seems nice and unique to start things off.
7:53 PM
StraightUpCigars: Great start! I’m tasting cedar and nutty flavor with a sweet spice on the finish.
7:54 PM
Terry1: Mine is producing lots of smoke. I’m getting a nice generic sweetness, the nutty flavor, some spice and a slight black coffee bitternes on the finish. Good start.
7:55 PM
IamDarren: after a few more puffs I think you are right, what I was tasting as charred wood is actually cedar up front followed by black coffee. Im really liking it.
7:56 PM
StraightUpCigars: I remember this cigar now, it’s a new release and the third on in the line.
7:57 PM
IamDarren: I think their last release was in Cigar Afficianado’s top 10 or something. They are known for top end cigars.
7:58 PM
IamDarren: Mine is already shifting gears. Picking up a lot more of that buttery sweetness and nuts. Coffee flavor is still there but in the background.
7:59 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, the Colorado was #1 cigar in 2k9ish time period.
8:01 PM
IamDarren: I love how when the smoke first hits the palate it seems powerful and almost bitter for just a split second, then the sweetness washes it out and leaves the finish clean.
8:01 PM
IamDarren: ash just dropped in the tray so watch out
8:03 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’d call this one medium-full body… so much ooomph with each puff if you will.
8:04 PM
IamDarren: yeah lots of complexity in each puff, its great for the palate, I have gotten much strength and no pepper to speak of.
8:05 PM
Terry1: We just had a power bump. Turned everything off. I had run inside and reset everything.
8:05 PM
IamDarren: Doesn’t that stink, my power flickers at least once a day. I have all the important stuff on a battery backup.
8:06 PM
StraightUpCigars: That’s smart. I should get one… off to shop
8:07 PM
IamDarren: I didn’t get a very big one, with the TV and PC both on it I think I can only get about 3 to 5 min. of power but its usually enough for the power spikes and flickers.
8:08 PM
IamDarren: Cigar is REALLY mellowing out. Sweet nutty flavor is dominating at this point. Started out med/full but has now backed off to med strength.
8:09 PM
Terry1: Flavorwise mine is about the same. It’s losing some of the sweetness but the bitterness is fading too. My problem is with the tear in the wrapper. Every time a puff I hear popping noises. It’s now split from about the band to the foot. Hasn’t unraveled yet but it looks like it will.
8:10 PM
IamDarren: Dang it. sometimes when i get a bad one i lift it up and lick it and then stick it back down. Its tedious but sometimes it actually works.
8:11 PM
StraightUpCigars: That blows Terry. I REALLY like this cigar. Mine is burning dead even and pouring out smoke. The sweetness is increasing.
8:12 PM
Terry1: It hasn’t lifted yet. There’s just a jagedy tear all the way down it. The band stopped it from going to the top. Looks like the binder is holding. It’s just expanding with the heat. It’s still smoking okay.
8:13 PM
IamDarren: still getting just a hint of coffee, really starting to remind me of sweetened coffee mixed with milk. Super sweet and creamy now.
8:17 PM
StraightUpCigars: I agree with the coffee flavor with sweetness and some spice on the back of the tongue. I’m puffing on this thing like crazy.
8:18 PM
Terry1: Mine is losing the sweetness. It must be coming from the wrapper. It looks like the cigar is burning just the binder underneath the tear so only half of the wrapper is burning.
8:20 PM
Terry1: I wish I had another one I’d pitch this one and try again. I think this problem is unique with this one cigar because of the tear and not really a construction issue in general.
8:23 PM
Terry1: In fact I’d say the construction was pretty good. It’s still drawing and smoking good so it must have a good binder. I just did a major correction to see if that would fix it.
8:23 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, too bad we can’t 3D print cigars yet!
8:26 PM
IamDarren: that would be sweet! sign me up
8:27 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’ll get right on that
8:27 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is increasing in body and taking on a bitter and fruity flavor. I like it, it’s not too strong yet.
8:27 PM
IamDarren: whats that device on star trek that just makes whatever you want out of thin air? I always thought that was badass.
8:29 PM
IamDarren: im at about the halfway mark. Still very sweet with a little spice coming back into the picture. Slight increase in body.
8:29 PM
StraightUpCigars: I don’t know, never watched that show.
8:30 PM
IamDarren: wtf? you never watched star trek…. now i feel like a nerd
8:30 PM
StraightUpCigars: I did like the Star Wars movies… does that count?
8:30 PM
StraightUpCigars: And read a couple of the books… that pretty nerdy.
8:31 PM
IamDarren: lol, nope. A lot of the technology in Star Trek was based on real principles and ideas. A lot of the technology they used in star trek that wasn’t even heard of at the time is now a reality.
8:31 PM
Terry1: The correction helped. Getting more of the sweetness now and less of the bitterness. It’s tasting much better now. Amazing how one leaf can change the cigar.
8:33 PM
Terry1: Mine must be smoking fast. I’m already at the band. I’m scared to take it off. Maybe I’ll just burn through it.
8:34 PM
IamDarren: Something that sticks with me to this day is an interview they did with a guy who worked on the secret classified projects for the gov. at Area 51. He was blurred out and they had to morph his voice…. but his words were. “Have you seen Star Trek? Been there, done that.”
8:35 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is smoking fast too Not really, I’m just smoking this one fast.
8:37 PM
IamDarren: lol, looks like im the only one with a little self control I have been finding that a lot of cigars provide the best flavor when smoked at a moderate pace. So I have made a habit out of setting the cigar down on the tray between puffs.

8:37 PM
StraightUpCigars: I saw a show like that one time about aliens on cable, the interviews were pretty compelling. I just hope that if aliens exist that they’re allergic to lead
8:37 PM
IamDarren: Haha! I hope it wouldn’t come to that and they would be friendly.
8:39 PM
IamDarren: I just think its cool that we live in a society where the government can put a bunch of super brilliant scientists and engineers out in a secret location with unlimited funds and say “Here ya go, come up with the coolest most mind blowing stuff you can think of!”
8:42 PM
IamDarren: Whoa! Just about the last third and all at once the flavors from the first third are back. Sweetness is still dominating but the coffee flavor is back in full force and its leaving some bitterness on the finish.
8:43 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, this one is kicking butt right now. Smoke production is ridiculous.
8:44 PM
Terry1: Mine is tasting how it started. The wrapper stopped cracking. Looks like it will finish well.
8:47 PM
IamDarren: strength is starting to surpass the first third. Its now in the full range.
8:49 PM
IamDarren: starting to loose some sweetness and spice is increasing
8:49 PM
StraightUpCigars: That sweetness is about even with the bitterness for me right now. I really like the balance.
8:50 PM
IamDarren: i think we can give it an A+ in the complexity category.
8:50 PM
Terry1: I’d agree the strength is building but it’s not near as strong as the other Casa Magna we smoked. At least from what I remember.
8:51 PM
IamDarren: It had a lot darker wrapper and had a lot darker flavor profile. I liked it too but this one seems more balanced.
8:52 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, that Oscuro was by all means excellent, but this one has some something unique going on. Glad yours fixed itself Terry!
8:52 PM
StraightUpCigars: Or should I say, glad you fixed IT.
8:55 PM
Terry1: Yeah sorry for the drama but I really thought it was a goner. I was thinking of not posting a score for it. I’m glad it’s tasting good now. I was feeling left out from what you guys were getting.
8:56 PM
IamDarren: bitterness keeps increasing on mine. Its not too bad yet but im not liking the finish nearly as much as before.
8:58 PM
StraightUpCigars: I have really slowed down my puffing since I’m near the end and it helps with the bitterness, obviously. It has turned fairly bitter though.
8:59 PM
IamDarren: it seems to be lingering on my tongue until i take a drink. Think it might be tar. Im gonna let it rest and try purging to see if i can get the last inch to improve.
8:59 PM
Terry1: That’s what I’m getting. The aftertaste is bitter.
9:00 PM
IamDarren: purging really helped
9:01 PM
Terry1: A shot of whiskey helps too.
9:01 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lol!
9:01 PM
IamDarren: hmmm… good idea
9:03 PM
IamDarren: well i got a few good puffs and now the flavor is really tapering off. Think im about ready to rate.
9:04 PM
Terry1: I’m at the nub. I can rate now.
9:04 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, mine is burning the filanges. Give me a sec
9:10 PM
IamDarren: Great cigar. A little pricey but worth it for the most part.
9:10 PM
StraightUpCigars: Good scores! It’s a good stick and well worth the price IMO.
9:11 PM
Terry1: Obviously you guys had a better experiense than I did. I had a lot of bitterness when the wrapper split. I’d like to try it again. The last third was very good. I’d recommend trying it.
9:12 PM
IamDarren: for sure one of if not THE best Dominican cigars I have had
