Carlos Torano Exodus 1959 Silver Edition – Cigar Review

Carlos Torano Exodus 1959 Silver Edition
By: Carlos Torano
Size: Torpedo 6.5” x 54

The Carlos Torano Exodus 1959 Silver Edition was introduced in 2002 as a follow up to the popular Exodus Gold. The wrapper is a nice looking Honduran Criollo ‘98. It has a Costa Rican binder and fillers from Costa Rica, Honduras and Mexico. The cigar feels tightly packed.

Clipping the torpedo head I get a very tight draw. This is an issue I find with a lot of torpedos so I’m not surprised. I clipped about as much as I dared off the head and the draw improved but was still tighter than I like. I get a dry pecan note and a little raisin sweetness on the cold draw.

First Third: The Exodus Silver opens up with a bitter grass note. After about five minutes the bitter grass fades away and is replaced by a nice cedar note, some spices and a little caramel sweetness in the background. The medium bodied smoke is very aromatic with sweet cedar notes. I’m liking it!

Second third: I touched up the wrapper to even out the burn. Flavors are still dominated by the slightly sweet woody note and some spice in the retrohale but in the finish I’m picking up a black coffee bitterness. It’s a good bitterness not like the grassy bitterness I got at the start. The salt and pepper ash tends to flower and taps off easily.

Last third: During the final third the flavors are still predominately wood and coffee and the sweet cedar note is still present in the aroma. The strength slowly builds to a solid medium-full as I approached the nub. Once I corrected the burn in the second third, it remained mostly even and the ash stopped flowering at about the time.

Final thoughts: I enjoyed the Torano Exodus 1959 Silver Edition. Once the cigar heated up, the sweetness from the aroma complimented the wood and coffee notes I got from the cigar and really made it shine. My only real complaint is the tight draw I experienced with all the samples I tried. With all the cigar choices available now I probably would not buy a box of these but I would buy singles to smoke from time to time. I recommend giving the Exodus Silver a try.
