Tonight’s group review was of the Arturo Fuente Cateau Fuente King B. That a whole lot of words… for a whole lot of cigar. The King B is the largest in the Chateau Fuente series. Our samples had a simple barnyard smell, but they had been extensively aged. For such a large cigar we expected construction problems, but there were none to be found. It smoked perfectly the entire time. In addition to the good construction, the flavor was excellent. It started off simple, sweet and earthy flavor with a peppery and spicy finish. By the end of the cigar there was a lot more pepper and spice with a coffee flavor. This one is definitely worth a purchase. We liked everything about, it is worth the high price tag.

StraightUpCigars: Mine has somewhat of a dull barnyard like smell, but I think a lot of that can be attributed to the time it has been aged (over a year!). The draw is a little airy too, but that’s better than tight.
Terry1: I’m not a fan of the cedar wrap. It looks nice but who knows what is hidden underneath, cracks? mold?
StraightUpCigars: I am not either. I usually remove the cedar, but I did not intend on aging this one that long.
Terry1: My draw is loose as well. On the cold draw I get a little bit of berry. Lighting up.
StraightUpCigars: I really like the way mine started out. Very cedary and nutty with a lot of pepper and some spice on the finish. Entirely delicious.
Terry1: The wrapper is really oily, feels like suede. Getting lots of smoke. I detect some sweetness, earth, cedar. Pepper in the sinus. I like how it’s starting too.
Terry1: So does King B refer to the size or it is a tweak on the sun grown blend?
StraightUpCigars: I get that sweetness too. I believe the King B just refers to the size, I don’t think there is a tweak on the blend, but don’t quote me.
Terry1: It looks like it is the size. This looks like it’s almost a 60 rg. I like the fact it has a torpedo head on it. Makes it much easier to smoke.
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, I can really dig the large RG cigars in torpedo form. This one smokes really well.
StraightUpCigars: I am already picking up on some coffee flavor, I think that is the source of the subtle sweetness.
Terry1: I’m not getting the coffee yet. I’m getting more sweetness and that berry note in the background. The pepper comes through on the finish. I’m liking the aroma, not so much the retrohale.
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, the retrohale is a little rough. I think the age has a lot to do with that. Just looked it up and these cigars are from 11/2010!
StraightUpCigars: They were gifted from
StraightUpCigars: Thompson cigar.
Terry1: I’ve been smoking a bunch of my cigars from 2010. I think they are hitting their peak this year. I’m amazed how a couple of years can improve a cigar.
StraightUpCigars: It really does. I like my Cuba Libres even more now!
StraightUpCigars: Mine is smoking REALLY fast. I am already past the first ash.
Terry1: You probably saw my comment on the Padilla Cazadores. Now I wish I had bought a box. Great cigar. I hope it stays in production. Saw your post in the forum. (Glad to see it up and running again.)
Terry1: That’s funny I was thinking this cigar is smoking slowly. I’m only an inch in. You need to slow down.
StraightUpCigars: ok, ok I will but I like this one!
Terry1: I like it too. That first puff after it’s sat for a minute is delicious. Sweet cedar is what I taste.
Terry1: This is easier when Darren is here. I can sit back, enjoy the cigar and let him ramble on.
StraightUpCigars: True! He does all the fact searching on the cigar too… oh how he is missed.
Terry1: The ash just fell off in a solid one inch chuck. I think it’s interesting how some cigars burn almost flat and others have a cone. I’m assuming it’s the ligero in the middle burning slower that the rest. This one must not have much ligero. Still a lot of flavor.
StraightUpCigars: I think I am halfway done already! I can’t help it You are right, this one has less ligero than what we have been smoking lately.
StraightUpCigars: It really makes for a smoother, mild bodied smoking experience. Sometimes that’s good, sometimes that ‘s bad.
StraightUpCigars: Construction has been excellent one mine. What about yours?
Terry1: I’m thinking the Cameroon wrapper is bringing on the flavor. Good stuff.
Terry1: Construction is perfect for me.
Terry1: However I don’t like where the band is. Seems to high.
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, never a dull smoke with Cameroon. I agree, although my band slid right off… maybe yours moved around on you?
Terry1: Doesn’t matter now. I slid it off.
StraightUpCigars: That’s what she said… sorry I had to. In memory of Darren/
Terry1: LOL. Yeap we need Darren to lighten this up.
Terry1: Tickets for the cigar festival go on sale tomorrow. Are you going to make it?
StraightUpCigars: I am going to have to play it by ear. We still have not decided b/n CO or FL and haven’t looked at the calender either.
StraightUpCigars: I’m not big on planning or organization! Don’t tell my boss that.
Terry1: I’m getting excited. This will be my first time doing anything like this. Not sure what to expect but it should be fun.
Terry1: I’m really curious about what cigars they’ll give you. It’s right after IPCPR so I’m hoping to see a couple of new releases.
StraightUpCigars: It should be a blast, I am sure time will fly and you will meet a lot of people before the end of the day! You will defintely get some new releases. If I remember right DE is a sponsor… might get a Liga Privada or something along hose lines.
StraightUpCigars: This one packs a lot of flavor for a medium body cigar. The pepper is increasing for me. I am also getting more coffee then before.
Terry1: I’m getting more of the coffee now. Right now it’s really smooth and flavorful. If I don’t retrohale I barely notice the pepper.
Terry1: I’m about half way and I’m already thinking I need to get some more of these!
StraightUpCigars: I totally agree. I think you get a better bang for your buck with the Queen B, but then again this one is smoking really nice. AF rarely disappoints, but this one is exceptional.
Terry1: One of my first cigars was the Curly Head. Started me on the road as a serious cigar smoker.
StraightUpCigars: The resting smoke on mine smells awesome. This is one I would not hesitate to light up in public. I have not had a curly head, but everyone speaks highly of them.
Terry1: It’s funny I tried another one a few months ago and wasn’t too impressed by it. I guess the exposure to a lot of different cigar, (thanks to you and Darren) has improved my palate.
Terry1: This cigar does have a nice aromatic quality to it.
StraightUpCigars: Every once in a while I am called back to a simple, smooth cigar, like the ones I started with. Sometimes it is good to take a step back from the bold flavored full body cigars.
Terry1: This is a good cigar for that! I’m getting more of the pepper now that you mentioned. Makes my tongue tingle.
StraightUpCigars: Mine too! It really has a lasting finish. I have whiskey tonight and it complements it well.
Terry1: I’m surprised the strength has stayed in the medium range. I love cigars that provide lots of flavor without knocking you out with strength. My compliments to the blender.
StraightUpCigars: Well said. Not just medium strength, but medium bodied too! Very good stuff.
StraightUpCigars: Mine is all but finished already. How is yours going? Did I smoke too fast?
Terry1: I think I got caught up to you because I’m just about done.
StraightUpCigars: I really think that fast smoke time and slightly loose draw is due to the age, but it could not have smoked any better.
Terry1: No complaints from me. This was a real treat. Thanks.
StraightUpCigars: Thank Thompson Cigar. They sent these out a while ago to promote a X-mas deal they had going. I reviewed the Queen B and let these sit a while. Boy, they were worth the wait!
StraightUpCigars: In this rare instance, they were worth the premium price tag. Here is my rating:
Terry1: I Agree, well worth the wait and price.
StraightUpCigars: good scores for a premium on this site
Terry1: Now I’m wondering if I bought some now if I’d have to wait a couple of years to get this same experience.
StraightUpCigars: Good question. I really liked the Queen Bs that I smoked right out of the box, so
StraightUpCigars: I think you get a similar experience right away.
StraightUpCigars: Maybe not quite this good, though.
Terry1: I think I’ll take my chances. Good cigar.
