APC – Cigar Review

This week’s group cigar review is of the APC.  APC stands for Amilcar Perez Castro, a blender that Rocky Patel calls “The Master”.  This cigar has a really nice looking dark colored wrapper and the construction seems great prior to lighting up.  Once lit, the APC has a creamy, spicy, and citrus taste to lit.  Later in the cigar, a charred oak flavor crept its way in.   This full bodied cigar packed a lot of flavor and smoked well.  1 of the 3 cigars we reviewed had construction problems.  All in all, this is an affordable cigar that you really have to try.  At SUC inexpensive cigars that smoke great score very well, and the APC is no exception!

7:36 PM
StraightUpCigars: Amilcar Perez Castro… I’ve never heard that first name before.
7:37 PM
StraightUpCigars: Chocalatey smell to it and a very dark wrapper. This thin was calling out to me tonight… smoke me…
7:39 PM
Terry1: He’s the blender for the Vudu. A cigar I liked. Since he put his name on this one, I’m hoping it’s just as good.
7:40 PM
IamDarren: Looks like a decent cigar. Im just getting a little earthiness from the wrapper, but the cold draw adds some kind of spice that i can’t place.
7:41 PM
IamDarren: draw is a little tight but not too bad
7:41 PM
StraightUpCigars: Cold draw is spicy! My draw is just about perfect. I am going to light er up.
7:42 PM
IamDarren: here comes the flame
7:42 PM
Terry1: I’m getting a sweet fruity note on the cold draw, something like plum. I’ve got a good draw on mine. Lighting up.
7:44 PM
IamDarren: this puppy has some spice, and its the first thing you taste on the draw.
7:45 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lots of spice, but I think Terry nailed it. I am tasting some really tangy fruit. Very unique!
7:46 PM
IamDarren: yeah its very bright and has a citrus quality too it. It is getting a little creamy on the finish but it fades fast.
7:47 PM
Terry1: Nice start. I agree with the spice and that citrus tang. Producing lots of smoke.
7:47 PM
IamDarren: burn line is already going astray, hopefully it self corrects.
7:49 PM
StraightUpCigars: Man, the flavor on this thing is glorious IMO. It is really hitting the spot.
7:51 PM
IamDarren: mine is mellowing, getting more of a sweet creamy flavor now. The spice is also fading a bit.
7:52 PM
IamDarren: interesting, i just took a double draw and the spice came back. more heat = more spice.
7:53 PM
Terry1: That citrus note is really dominating the finish on mine. Makes me want more. There’s a woody note underneath that I like. Burn is wavey but is keeping up.
7:54 PM
StraightUpCigars: My burn is pretty awful too. I’ll try to hold out on correcting it.
7:55 PM
IamDarren: maybe its just me but mine is really transitioning. Im not getting any citrus now and its picking up sort of a toffee flavor… im fighting a cold so i may be way off.
7:56 PM
Terry1: Good buy on a box right now, $52 for 20 robustos. Wrapper is a U.S broadleaf maduro with Nicaraguan and Honduran fillers.
7:57 PM
IamDarren: thats in my budget! Is that retail or bid site?
7:58 PM
Terry1: That’s on the retail site, on sale.
7:58 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine is transitioning too. I’m getting dark roast coffee and charred oak flavor. Deep, dark, full bodied flavors!
7:58 PM
IamDarren: yeah, im now getting coffee on the finish. Very complex indeed!
8:00 PM
IamDarren: wow, only 54 for the toro and its rated better
8:01 PM
Terry1: I agree with the charred wood flavor. The citrus is still there but faded. I’m still getting some spice.
8:02 PM
IamDarren: surely these will come up on cigarmonster, at least that way you get free shipping.
8:03 PM
IamDarren: this cigar is still medium bodied in my opinion, would make a great ‘any time of day’ smoke.
8:05 PM
IamDarren: check this out… Don Pepin Garcia is Amilcar Perez Castro’s father in law and he is now the main blender for Rocky Patel.
8:05 PM
StraightUpCigars: I would put mine firmly in the full bodied category. My burn had just about fixed itself, now it’s worse than ever!
8:06 PM
Terry1: It’s got a unique flavor profile. This isn’t a profile I would normally smoke but I’m liking the change. I would smoke this one again.
8:07 PM
IamDarren: i dunno Matt, its definitely full flavored but i could smoke this entire cigar without taking a drink. Its smooth, has no pepper and mild spice. Flavors are rich but not that strong.
8:07 PM
Terry1: My burn has evened out. It’s got an interesting layered ash. Looks like a stack of Pringles.
8:09 PM
IamDarren: my burn has evened out thankfully
8:09 PM
StraightUpCigars: I think we have two different cigars Darren
8:09 PM
Terry1: This seems to be smoking fast. I’m already at the band. Came off without any trouble.
8:10 PM
IamDarren: Im still about a half inch from the band
8:10 PM
Terry1: I’m winning then.
8:10 PM
StraightUpCigars: Well, half of my cigar is beating you
8:11 PM
IamDarren: well aren’t we all in a competitive mood tonight
8:13 PM
StraightUpCigars: Burn correction completed. The cigar was actually starting to curve off b/c one side would not burn like the other.
8:14 PM
IamDarren: wow, if you go to the famoussmoke home page they have some pretty great deals. Free shipping on orders over 50. 10 off 50 or more. 15 off 100 or more. 20 off 150 or more. So this box would get free shipping and 10 bucks off too.
8:15 PM
StraightUpCigars: That’s a dangerous deal. Free shipping gets me more than anything.
8:16 PM
IamDarren: ok i give in Matt, im creeping into the last third and am getting a charred oak flavor now. Its also got some bite too it. I would call this medium/full to full at this point.
8:18 PM
IamDarren: winter is sure here, last night it got down to 25 and tonight its not much better.
8:18 PM
StraightUpCigars: Victory… nah, we’re not being competitive tonight!
8:19 PM
Terry1: Mine is getting sour on the finish. It’s probably the citus from the beginning without the sweetness.
8:19 PM
IamDarren: lol, so Terry which do you like better so far, the APC or the Guillermo Leon?
8:20 PM
Terry1: I like both but I’d say the Guillermo Leon is more my style.
8:21 PM
Terry1: But I can buy four of the APC to one Leon.
8:23 PM
IamDarren: Retail on these is around a hundred bucks i think. And i didn’t pay retail for the Guillermo Leons. So its not really that far off.
8:23 PM
StraightUpCigars: I’m going to have to vote for the APC
8:24 PM
IamDarren: if you haven’t tried the Guillermo Leon you don’t get a vote
8:25 PM
Terry1: I will say I liked the Vudu better than the APC.
8:25 PM
IamDarren: its pretty close for me, might lean a little toward APC.
8:26 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lol. I’m up in the air too. I’m going for APC just because of price.
8:27 PM
IamDarren: i think the flavors are more complex on this one, but it doesn’t make me want to take a puff every 5 seconds either. So maybe the flavors don’t meld as well as the Vudu…. i dunno
8:30 PM
IamDarren: got my Oval sampler in the mail the other day… boy do those look tasty! http://www.cigarsinternational.com/proddisp.asp?item=SP-SLEASST01

A.J. Fernandez Special-Edition Oval Sampler – Cigars International
8:30 PM
StraightUpCigars: That was money well spent.
8:30 PM
Terry1: I’m getting close to being done. I’m still getting the coffee, a little pepper, some charred wood and a slight sourness on the finish. Good complex ending.
8:31 PM
IamDarren: i kinda wish mine was done at this point. I can see my breath over the resting smoke
8:32 PM
IamDarren: just got a blast of charred oak… wasn’t very pleasant
8:33 PM
IamDarren: purge time
8:34 PM
StraightUpCigars: mine is starting to burn my nose. I really liked it all the way to the end. God awful construction, though. I just did a second burn correction.
8:35 PM
IamDarren: purge worked pretty well but i am almost at the nub and i want too keep the nice sweet spicey note on my palate so im gonna set it down.
8:35 PM
IamDarren: … and go get warm
8:36 PM
StraightUpCigars: Not too bad of smoke time for a little guy. I’m going to rate it.
8:40 PM
Terry1: Good value cigar. I’m glad we got to try it.
8:41 PM
IamDarren: yeah i enjoyed it
8:41 PM
StraightUpCigars: Pretty decent scores. If only the construction was batter ourt averages would be higher.
