This week’s group cigar review is of the Alec Bradley Black Market. This cigar has a really nice looking wrapper with a spicy tobacco smell. The draw is pretty tight after using a cutter. Once lit up, the cigar has a charred wood flavor with some sweetness and some pepper. One of the review sticks tended to be very bitter, while the other was not nearly as bitter. The sweet creamy flavor increased into the second third, but was then the cigar ended much like it began – dominated by pepper flavor. Overall, this cigar left some to be desired in the flavor department. The flavor remained mostly the same throughout the smoke, but it did have perfect construction. These cigars aren’t particularly cheap, so this isn’t one that we would add to our regular rotation, but may be worth a try.

IamDarren: cigar looks to have decent construction, The large band slipped off with only a little resistance.
StraightUpCigars: I grabbed the AB Black Market and cut the cap off. I has a somewhat tight draw. I like the spicy tobacco smell and nice looking wrapper.
IamDarren: I used the new cutter and it worked well. Slightly tight draw but it opens up when i chew on it slightly. Getting a nice leather note on the draw with a hint of spice.
StraightUpCigars: Good deal. Lighting up.
StraightUpCigars: Very bold start to the flavors, extremely full bodied. A bitter charred wood flavor with some spice to boot.
IamDarren: nice start. It lit easily and is producing ample smoke. Pretty good initial flavors. A mix of leather and charred wood for the base. Also some sweetness, seems to be like a sweetened coffee note.
IamDarren: beginning to detect a little pepper
StraightUpCigars: I wish mine had some sweetness, going to hope that develops.
IamDarren: well its definitely not a sweet cigar, but there is a hint. Just enough to keep it from getting dry.
IamDarren: Pairing it with Rye Whiskey and Pepsi.
StraightUpCigars: I just have water tonight, I was too lazy to make a drink
StraightUpCigars: It’s still cold here, hopefully you send the 40’s weather this way.
IamDarren: Im sure it will be in the 20s by morning but its been in the 50s and 60s during the day which helps.
StraightUpCigars: Nice, I’m jealous.
StraightUpCigars: What have you been up to lately?
IamDarren: We started spraying wheat again. Hopefully I will finish up tomorrow. Then its just keeping the cattle fed.
IamDarren: starting to loose a little of the charred flavor. Picking up on some spice now thats pretty good. Might be mellowing.
IamDarren: probably in a half inch or so
StraightUpCigars: Mine is finally getting a creamy sweetness, which is much needed after the spicy and bitter start.
IamDarren: approaching the second third. Burn is good, just tapped off the ash. Flavor has mellowed a bit but its still full bodied. Still a rich earthy base with a little leather. Then some spice and a creamy sweet note. Good flavor combo at this point.
StraightUpCigars: I concur. Good construction on this first third too. Lots of smoke production.
IamDarren: Most AB cigars are not this full bodied. So far i am impressed.
IamDarren: tried that Opus X yet?
StraightUpCigars: I have not had that one yet. I thought about bringing it on one of the recent trips, but didn’t want to bang it up prior to smoking it.
IamDarren: I remember you said that you smoked a couple on your honeymoon but i couldn’t remember which ones.
StraightUpCigars: I had the anejo, armada, and padron.
IamDarren: so you have another one left besides the Opus X?
StraightUpCigars: I think the padron was my favorite. I was surprised it wasn’t as full bodied as people say it is.
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, I can’t recall which one, I’d have to check inside, but then it would be hard to come back out
IamDarren: lol, no thats ok. I haven’t been making any purchases lately. I bought a couple boxes of Camachos last month because they were like 60 bucks a box. I think they were trying to get rid of the old stuff to make room for the new ones.
IamDarren: Those Diploma Maduros are pretty darn good.
StraightUpCigars: Those were a good deal. I haven’t bought any lately either. I’ll have to look up the diplomas.
StraightUpCigars: Those look tasty, are they better than the triple mads?
IamDarren: Yeah, a lot more refined, balanced flavor. The Triple Maduro is strait up black coffee with just enough sweetness to keep it from getting bitter. Plus the Diplomas burn a lot better.
IamDarren: If I ever get enough sticks to send you I will include one.
StraightUpCigars: Sweet. I have a whole bunch to send, I’ll probably be doing that soon.
IamDarren: wow, awesome. I don’t even know how many we have left to review at this point.
StraightUpCigars: We have a lot already
StraightUpCigars: My sweetness is pretty much gone and the spicy/bitter is back. I’m going to slow down on the puffing.
IamDarren: sweetness comes and goes on mine but its not bitter. Still liking the spice.
IamDarren: im just crossing the halfway mark.
StraightUpCigars: I’m a little past it.
IamDarren: burn was getting a little wonky on one side but its starting to straighten out.
StraightUpCigars: The ash has held on well for me, I tapped it off a couple of times just so I wouldn’t push my luck
IamDarren: yeah, it does seem to be well constructed. Draw has stayed consistent.
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, that has been a big surprise for me.
IamDarren: i think i may be getting a hint of that bitterness that you talked about but its reminding me of a nut, maybe a brazil nut… Its just on the finish and doesn’t linger.
IamDarren: strength seems to be ramping up a little.
IamDarren: starting to drink and spit more
StraightUpCigars: I agree, this one has some kick. Not too bad so far. I haven’t starting spitting or hickuping yet
IamDarren: Spice is getting stronger now and the pepper is making a comeback. Heading into the last third.
IamDarren: my cigar only has about a half inch left and its ending how it began, very rich with a lot of earth and leather. Pepper has not become an issue. Still a little sweetness in the mix.
StraightUpCigars: I agree, the cigar is ending the same as the start. I have a lot of bitter earthy and charred wood flavor, with even more spice. Not too strong, but has some kick. I have enjoyed it.
IamDarren: same here, i think im gonna head inside. Temps are dropping fast.
StraightUpCigars: I’m ready to go inside too, rating now.
StraightUpCigars: Wait, did you send this one, or Terry? My bags may be mixed up.
IamDarren: I had it in my pile but they could have gotten mixed.
IamDarren: I was impressed for being an AB cigar. Normally i don’t set my sites too high with them.
StraightUpCigars: You did send this one.
IamDarren: thanks for the link, i will check it out
StraightUpCigars: These are not cheap, about $8 apieece from what I’m finding. I really liked that second third when the sweetness was around. The first and final thirds left me slightly disappointed. Overall, not a bad cigar at all, one of my favorites in the AB line, but not one I’d add to the regular rotation.
