AJ Fernandez Mayimbe – Cigar Review

AJF Mayimbe Cigar 2

The Mayimbe is yet another cigar from one of the now most talked about names in the industry – AJ Fernandez.  Prior to lighting we noticed a pungent barnyard smell to the nice looking wrapper leaf, and had a somewhat tight draw after cutting.  Once lit up, the cigar was extremely complex in flavor the entire time.  It started off woody and earthy, while ending with a rich and smokey coffee flavor.  The entire time there was a delicate balance between a sweet and peppery/spicy flavor that really held our interest.  Overall, each stick had some minor construction issues that is really unacceptable for a cigar with a price of $15.  With that said, this was one of the most masterfully blended cigars we’ve ever had the pleasure of smoking, and it was a real treat.  We definitely recommend splurging on this one, if you get the chance.

AJF Mayimbe Cigar 3
7:39 PM
IamDarren: Wrapper looks like it has some aging, has that rich leathery look. Draw is a little on the tight side but not too bad. Getting a sweet, creamy note on the cold draw.
7:41 PM
StraightUpCigars: It has a pungent woody smell to the wrapper. The wrapper is bumpy and oily looking. It has a nice draw after cutting.
7:42 PM
IamDarren: Mine also has a few sun spots. Im excited to get started
7:42 PM
Terry1: Solid feeling cigar. Nice barnyard note on the wrapper. My draw is on the tight side too but I’m not expecting any problems. Getting a sweet note on the cold draw.
7:43 PM
StraightUpCigars: Lighting up!
7:45 PM
Terry1: Lighting up.
7:45 PM
IamDarren: i sure hope its good. These run 15 bucks a stick! Youch
7:45 PM
IamDarren: Lighting up
7:46 PM
StraightUpCigars: Wow, I didn’t realize that.
7:47 PM
StraightUpCigars: Real nice start, woody and earthy with some peppery spice in there.
7:47 PM
IamDarren: whoa, super complex, i can’t describe it….. sweet, toasty, woody, some sort of spice, lingers in the back of the throat
7:49 PM
Terry1: Good start for me. A nice mix of wood and sweetness with a some pepper in the sinus. Creamy smoke.
7:49 PM
IamDarren: its got a PA broadleaf wrapper, and the filler is all over the charts.
7:51 PM
StraightUpCigars: I saw some maduro leaf in the filler.
7:53 PM
IamDarren: only complaint so far is I have to double draw to get a lot of smoke, probably because of the tight draw. Love the flavor though. It starts off rich and woody and quickly switches to spicy and sweet on the finish.
7:54 PM
StraightUpCigars: I am getting some sweetness now too, but more in the form of a coffee flavor.
7:55 PM
Terry1: An interesting bakers spice is hiding in the background. Kind of faint but it reminds me of spice cake. Hopefully it gets stronger. I’m getting a coffee note as the primary flavor.
7:56 PM
IamDarren: just dropped the ash, and then got a taste of mocha… at first i thought it was chocolate but then i got that hint of coffee….. mocha latte maybe?
7:56 PM
IamDarren: boy this a complex one with flavors i hardly ever taste
7:57 PM
IamDarren: smoke production is improving
7:57 PM
Terry1: I’m having to double and triple puff to get my cigar going again. Not sure if it’s the draw or something else. It’s becoming a nuisance.
7:58 PM
StraightUpCigars: Each and every puff is a little different than the last. My draw is on the tight side, but it’s producing enough smoke.
8:00 PM
IamDarren: i was just rolling it in my hand to see if i could help the draw some more and the end of a stem started to push out, so naturally i pulled on it. Out came a 2 inch long stem and the draw is much better.
8:00 PM
IamDarren: probably gonna have to dock a point on construction for that
8:01 PM
StraightUpCigars: I think my heart would skip a beat pulling on a stem on a $15 cigar. Thank goodness it didn’t mess anything up.
8:01 PM
Terry1: I agree with the complexity. Flavors keep changing. All enjoyable and engaging. The constant puffing is my only complaint.
8:02 PM
IamDarren: i think maybe they sacrificed little on construction to pack so many different types of leafs in there. Great flavor and complexity so i guess the succeeded.
8:03 PM
IamDarren: watch that ash, its flaking on me
8:04 PM
StraightUpCigars: Yeah, that’s my only constuction complaint, the ash is constantly dropping.
8:07 PM
StraightUpCigars: I was about to say that spice is really ramping up, but then the sweetness ramped up to match it. This is a really impressive cigar so far.
8:08 PM
Terry1: My ash seems to be behaving. Burn is straight. Every third or forth puff I get a bitter tannin that coats my tongue. Not liking that. Otherwise I like the flavors.
8:10 PM
Terry1: It seems to be a reaction to how fast I smoke. If I let it rest it seems to help with the bitterness.
8:14 PM
IamDarren: agreed, i get more spice and pepper when i smoke fast
8:14 PM
Terry1: Around the halfway mark and I’m feeling a touch of strength. Knowing AJs blends I’m expecting a powerhouse by the end.
8:14 PM
StraightUpCigars: A lot of glue on the bad, but it came off without incident.
8:19 PM
Terry1: My band popped off cleanly.
8:19 PM
StraightUpCigars: That pepper really lingers so long. I gotta feeling I’ll be tasting this one all night (ok with me as long as it stays this good)
8:22 PM
IamDarren: my band came off nicely, im also starting to get that pepper zing but the sweetness and creaminess really balances it out.
8:23 PM
Terry1: This is sure a pliable cigar. It’s nice to be able to roll the cigar in your fingers and not worry about cracking a dry wrapper.
8:24 PM
Terry1: The reason I’m rolling the cigar is to loosen the draw. It’s getting really tight on me.
8:24 PM
StraightUpCigars: I have noticed that the burn has slowed down and the ash doesn’t seem to be quite as flaky.
8:25 PM
IamDarren: my draw is perfect now, smoke production has doubled. Really coating the palate.
8:26 PM
StraightUpCigars: That’s good. Hopefully yours gets better too Terrry.
8:28 PM
Terry1: I’m a little puzzled by it. I used a draw poker and it slid in easily but the draw is still tight. Weird. I think it just has a lot of tobacco in it.
8:30 PM
IamDarren: it seems a little on the moist side, although its not swelling from the heat, but i do think it might have an impact on the draw.
8:31 PM
Terry1: I was just thinking about that. Maybe some swelling.
8:32 PM
StraightUpCigars: That could be.
8:32 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine’s fine, but it’s only 80* here.
8:33 PM
Terry1: Good point. It’s 100 degrees here.
8:33 PM
Terry1: I’m sweating and it’s not from the nicotine this time.
8:34 PM
IamDarren: its has cooled off a lot here in the last hour
8:36 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine continues to get richer and fuller bodied. It’s dominated by a very dark coffee flavor.
8:37 PM
IamDarren: this cigar is really a flavor bomb, i keep getting new flavors and then they fade and reveal something else.
8:38 PM
Terry1: Mine is dominated by that rich coffee flavors as well.
8:42 PM
IamDarren: im still getting that mocha with spice, hint of coffee on the finish
8:43 PM
IamDarren: finally into the last third
8:44 PM
Terry1: Slow burning cigar. Burn has been straight. Nicotine is ramping up.
8:45 PM
Terry1: Draw has finally opened up to where I don’t have to double puff to get the smoke going.
8:46 PM
StraightUpCigars: This baby’s got back! I thought it was going to be a quick smoke when we started. It’s burning nice and cool now.
8:50 PM
IamDarren: im really lovin that spice, its starting to make my mouth tingle a little
8:52 PM
StraightUpCigars: I can’t tell if it’s the spice making my mouth tingle, or the nicotine. This one has some kick! Terry called it.
8:54 PM
Terry1: My mouth is tingling too. Better more full flavors now that the draw has opened up for me. Very nice!
8:55 PM
IamDarren: ok, im starting to get a rich smokey flavor, sorta like hickory.
8:57 PM
IamDarren: this one is really a blending masterpiece, really taking me on a journey
8:58 PM
StraightUpCigars: It really is. I don’t think I’ve ever had a single cigar as interesting as this one in the flavor category. Constantly changing.
8:59 PM
Terry1: I agree. Great flavors. Nicotine is catching up for me. Glad I’m about done.
9:02 PM
StraightUpCigars: Mine doesn’t have whole lot left either. What a monster cigar, in all aspects.
9:05 PM
Terry1: Alright I’m done. Cigar is winning. You are right Darren this cigar was a flavorful journey.
9:07 PM
StraightUpCigars: Ratings in a second here.
9:08 PM
IamDarren: it was a great cigar, too bad on the minor construction issues
9:09 PM
StraightUpCigars: I had to a point off for the very high price, but only a point because this may be the best cigar I’ve ever had. The flavor constantly changed and was delicious. A point off for the weak ash. If it’s within your means, try this one for a special occasion! Beware of high strength and full body at the end.
9:09 PM
StraightUpCigars: If you’ve got the cash to blow, this is definitely box-worthy.
9:09 PM
Terry1: Yeah I ding a point on a box purchase not for the flavor or even the construction but for the strength. It overwhelmed me but I kept smoking it because of the flavor.
